Response Paper to R.R. Cobbs What is Slavery, and Its Foundation in the Natural Law
Paper must be a minimum of 300 words. Paper font must be one of the following: o Georgia o Garamond o Times New Roman o Calibri Line Spacing must be 1.5 or 2 All margins must be 1 inch Paper title must be bolded and centered at the top of the first page Students name must be underneath the title, centered, and un-bolded Papers can be handed in one of two ways: o Printed in black and white and stapled or, o E-mailed as a .doc or .docx attachment to matt@yihs.net Papers should engage with the specific arguments found in Cobbs essay but should not directly quote the essay. Some preliminary questions to tackle before beginning your paper: o What is a state of nature? o What is natural law? o What specific reasons does Cobb give to justify slavery? o Are there any logical inconsistencies in his arguments? (This is quite different than arguments that you simply do not agree with) o Why and how would someone think the way that Cobb thinks? o If you disagree with Cobb, what arguments might you make to defend your position?

Paper font must be one of the following: o Georgia o Garamond o Times New Roman o Calibri Line Spacing must be 1.5 or 2 All margins must be 1 inch Paper title must be bolded and centered at the top of the first page Students name must be underneath the title, centered, and un-bolded Papers should include at least three different sources, clearly identified in a separate works cited page. o Internet source urls must end in .org or .edu o At least two of your sources must be other than wikipedia All information from sources (that is anything you didnt know before you started this project) needs to be cited either parenthetically or in end notes. Papers can be handed in one of two ways: o Printed in black and white and stapled or, o E-mailed as a .doc or .docx attachment to matt@yihs.net Papers should do two main things: o Describe the subject with strong biographical detail o Place the subject in historical context by Describing the subjects role and significance in important historical events Describing ways in which the subject may have changed peoples attitudes and opinions, the course of history, and the present state of the country or even world
