Sainsburys Neston staff recently celebrated the stores second birthday at a joint Christmas and birthday party at the British Legion in Neston.

Store duos pedal power helps fund Lapland visit

Louise irvine and Emma randall, from Sainsburys, both took a turn on the exercise bike as part of the northern Lights Cycle ride to Lapland. There was no trip to the arctic Circle, however, as the cycle ride took place on exercise bikes at Cheshire Oaks! Local cycle clubs were also involved and the target of 2235 miles from neston to Lapland was achieved over the three days. A figure of 3500 was raised towards sending seriously ill children on holiday to Lapland at Christmas.

SainSburyS has been working closely with neston air cadets recently. The store donated Paralympic mascots to use as raffle prizes and water bottles and socks for sporting activities. The cadets of aTC 2375 squadron were also presented with a remembrance Day cake after they had worked very hard selling poppies in the foyer along with british Legion volunteers.

nESTOnS Siobhan Taylor is embarking on an unusual challenge this year, taking part in a six-day horse ride across the desert in the Middle Eastern state of Jordan.

The challenge ride is in October from Wadi rum, the land of Lawrence of arabia, to Petra, the nabatean rose red City, one of the great wonders of the world. St Winefrides Primary School Christmas Fair was judged to be a huge success with snow all around, festive treats and an enchanting grotto where visitors were able to see Santa and his helpers. Organised by The Parents Association, the feedback was fantastic with shoppers declaring it was one of the best school events they had attended.

Cadets raise funds

Neston Air Cadets have raised funds for the Royal Air Force Association (Wings Appeal), the Royal British Legion by selling poppies to remember our fallen, and more recently, they were among the thousands of people who trekked the streets of Liverpool to raise money for worthwhile charities. Their future endeavours include bagpacks, helping customers pack their shopping, raising funds for charitable causes.

Children from Treetops nursery at Oaklands have been letting their imaginations go wild with the Gruffalo story. They attached twigs and leaves to the ceiling to create a woodland effect and lower to ceiling height to make the area feel more enclosed and den-like. All dressed up for green day

WOODFaLL Primary school enjoyed an environmental awareness day, when all pupils could dress up in green clothes or wear a green themed costume. in return the children donated money towards environmental charities and future school eco projects. Liz Ellis, the local Waste Awareness Officer, started the day by leading a whole school assembly to introduce the 3rs and discuss whether different waste could be reduced, reused or recycled. Pupils were encouraged to walk to school, enjoyed an eco themed lunch and participated in a range of eco activities. infant pupils sorted waste items using the household recycling bins, made draught excluders and received a visit from the local bee keepers association. Junior pupils critical thinking skills were challenged by considering the impact of climate change and debating the use of renewable energy versus fossil fuels. Some classes enjoyed taking part in the schools first ever worm charming experience. l Woodfall children took raised 420 for Children in need by wearing something spotty on the day and organising activities such as cake sales and numerous games at break time. The school gardens and grounds have been recognised for providing a haven, valuable food, water and shelter for wildlife. Sunday 6th January Skydancer see Hen Harriers. Look out for the rSPb Love nature marquee, where staff and volunteers will be with telescopes and binoculars plus family activities, free information and more, from 12noon until dusk at the Donkey Stand, the Parade, Parkgate. Skydancer is a four-year project aimed at raising awareness and promoting the conservation of hen harriers in the north of England. The Dee Estuary is a vital wintering ground for these birds and is the best place to see them from October to March. This bird is a beautiful, agile hunter, and its aerobatic sky dances are among the most awesome spectacles in nature. unfortunately, with only a handful of pairs breeding successfully in England, the hen harrier is on the brink.
