Dear Parent/Guardian: As we come to the end of another school year, students are beginning to anticipate final exams and summer plans. To that end, the following information will assist you in planning and clarifying the exam schedule, transportation and absence concerns.

Graduation Practice at High School North

All students will report to their exams each day according to the above schedule. Underclassmen make-up exams will be administered on Friday, June 18th as noted above or by individual arrangement with your teacher. While we strongly discourage students from leaving school before June 18th, we understand that there may be a few circumstances that require early dismissal. In all cases, students who have missed exams must take their finals during the summer or at the end of the summer. Incomplete grades will be given for students who must leave prior to final exams. Bus transportation to school will be provided at the regular times. This will be the only transportation to school on exam days. Attendance will be taken in each exam period. Students who are scheduled for an exam and are absent from school must have a parent/guardian call our Tel-Safe line at 716-5100 x5110. Transportation home will be provided to students at 10:40 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. There will be no athletic or co-curricular activities during the final examination period; thus eliminating the 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. buses. All students must leave the building by 12:10 p.m. Students will be permitted to make up examinations only if an absence is the result of illness, death in the family, or extreme emergency. Please do not schedule personal and medical appointments during the examination period. Any student who misses an examination without a valid reason will receive an "F" and will make up the examination at a later date. The "F" and the make-up grade will be averaged together to determine the examination grade. All examinations must be taken before the start of the new term in September. A senior will be exempt from final examinations in courses in which he/she maintains an A average for the year, as well as for the fourth marking period. Students should seek confirmation of their status from their teachers prior to exam week. Parents who have concerns regarding failed courses or loss of credit due to attendance policy violations should contact their child's guidance counselor now regarding summer school opportunities. In order to be eligible to participate in athletics for fall or winter sports, a student must have earned 27.5 credits based on the final grades for the 2009-10 school year. We encourage all students to clear obligations before the last day of school. Failure to do so will result in withholding fall class schedules. Obligations must be cleared through the designated teacher or Ms. Shari Lukas in the Budget Office. On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, I would like to extend our appreciation to you and your children for a successful school year. PTSA 2009-2010 Closing Comments:

Again, another school year comes to a close! 2009/2010 was a difficult year for HSN PTSA, as we were faced with a decline in donations and membership participation in the face of a downturn in the economy. We would like to thank the 337 teachers, students and parents who joined PTSA and would like to ask that the families of the remaining approx. 1200 students and teachers at HSN to consider joining PTSA next year. Despite the downturn, we managed to again provide support to the HSN family, in the form of: *Minigrants to many of our school departments, clubs and sport teams; *Scholarships to some of our deserving students *A safe place for our seniors after Prom *Donations to various charity organizations * Educational presentations on SAT/Act, Naviance, Infinite Campus, Internet safety, Financing College and tips on gaining admission to the college of ones choice (to name a few)! A big thank you to all of the many people who helped us this year, especially those who will be leaving us for goodNan Sirihorachai, Amanda Lewis, Gisele Mendola, Vincent Mendola, Anjani Gharpure, Jane Grenzig, Maria San Pedro, Chris San Pedro, Debbie Briffa and the many people who worked diligently on Post Prom!! On a personal note, I will be stepping down as President of the PTSA and will be assisting next year as Vice President. I wanted to thank the Board Members and Committee members who helped me this year--I would not have been able to do it without you! A special thanks to the people who stepped up, when my work and travel commitments impacted my PTSA activities Maureen OConnor, Joy Whipple, Helen Lewis, Anjani Gharpure, Jane Spetalnick, and Chhaya Somani--and I know PTSA will be happy to have your support 2010/2011. NEWS FROM THE NURSES OFFICE: FALL SPORTS INFORMATION

Fall Sports including boys soccer, boys football, boys cross-country, girls soccer, girls tennis, girls field hockey, girls volleyball, girls cross-country, and cheerleading are eligible to start on or about June 15, 2010. In order to participate in Fall Sports the requirements are the following: A sports packet including a permission slip, a health history, athletic rules contract and emergency form must be completed for each sport during the year. Forms (available from the Nurses office and the district website) must be completed in blue or black ink and signed by a parent/guardian and student. A current physical examination must be on file in the health office. Please verify your students physical date with the school nurse. Academic Requirements

ONCE SUBMITTED, ALL COMPLETED PERMISSION FORMS WILL BE SUBJECT TO A 24HOUR REVIEW PERIOD.

PHYSICALS
N.J.A.C. 6A:16-2.2, states: Medical examinations for candidates for a school athletic squad or team must be conducted in the medical home of the student and a full report must be sent to the school. It is only in the case where a student does not have a medical home that the school physician is required to provide this examination at his/her office or other appropriately equipped facility. This law also applies to all required school physical exams. If you need a new physical, a form for your private physician to complete and sign must be obtained from the Health office or district website. This form must be returned with a complete sports permission packet to our Health office.

MORE NURSES NOTES

Having a private physical this summer? It would be helpful to have a private physical form completed at the time of the physical and send/fax the completed form to the health office. This exam can then be used for sports, working papers, ninth grade physicals, etc. Forms are available from the health office or district website. Annual Merck Test

Each year selected High School North students participate in the Annual Merck Test. This year our students participated in the Biology, Chemistry, and Integrated Science Testing competing with students throughout the State of New Jersey. Felix Xiao, a High School North 10th grade AP Chemistry student, scored 2nd in the State in Chemistry at the 60th Annual Merck State Science Day Competition. . Felix and his nominating teacher Mrs. Norato were honored at the Merck State Science Day Awards Ceremony, held at Merck Research Laboratories in Rahway, on Friday, June 4, 2010.

National Chemistry Olympiad Test

Two High School North students advanced to the National Chemistry Olympiad Test. Saurabh Mitra and Benjamin Liu participated in a Chemistry Olympiad Test administered to 35 Advance Placement Chemistry students at High School North. These same students then spent a day at Rider University performing an intense lab practicum. Although these students did not advance to the International Competition, they were awarded plaques by the American Chemical Society at dinner on May 11, 2010 to celebrate their accomplishments.

Chemical Society Chemagination Contest

High School North Chemistry students Renuka Reddy, Alicia Feng and Felix Xiao placed first in the Chemagination Contest sponsored by the American Chemical Society. The students and their teacher, Mrs. Julie Norato, were then invited to the American Chemical Society MARM (Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting) in Delaware to compete against other State finalists. Although our students did not win first place they did come away from the competition with a sense of accomplishment and some wonderful prizes.

Scholar of Distinction
Tracie Kong, a High School North Senior Advance Placement Student was named a Siemens/Advance Placement Scholar of Distinction. Only two such students are selected from each state, one of which is selected from a public school. Congratulations go out to Tracie and her teachers for such an Outstanding honor.

Columbia Science Summer Program

High School North student Michael Zhuang has accepted into the Columbia Science Summer Program for High School Students. Michael has also received a fellowship at the New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research for High School Students.

New Jersey Graduated Drivers License Changes

The Drivers Education teachers would like to remind students and parents of the recent rule changes that affect student drivers starting back on May 1,2010. This quick fact sheet should help spell things out.
There will be "NO" grandfathering. It will not matter if the student has already completed driving lessons and received a "validated" Special Learner Permit from their driving school, they need to have decals on their car starting May 1,2010. It will not matter if the student was 17, went to the MVC and already purchased an Examination Permit, they need to have decals on their car come May 1,2010. It will not matter if the student is 17 and has already taken his/her Road Test and already possesses a "Provisional" License (soon to be called a Probationary License), they need to have decals on their car come May 1,2010. The only drivers not affected by these rule changes are those who are in possession of a "Basic" Unrestricted License prior to May 1,2010. The distribution network for the decals has already being implemented. The Motor Vehicle Commission is the main distribution outlet for the decals

Princeton University's Mock Trial Competition

High School North's Debate League recently competed at Princeton University's Mock Trial competition. From a field of 124 competitors from three states and seven schools, the following North students won three of the ten Top Attorney awards for being ranked the best in at least three of their five matches: Anne Corbett Angela Sheng Siddhi Sundar From a 62 team field, High School North placed five teams in the top sixteen. The following teams placed: Christie Dougherty and Lavanya Ganesh placed 5th. Thomas Klimek and Felix Xiao placed 6th. Anne Corbett and Vikram Kesavabhotla placed 7th. Aneesha Raghunathan and Siddhi Sundar place 12th. Claire Su and Noel Su placed 15th We would like congratulate our students on their outstanding achievements! Aspirations Literary Magazine

Congratulations to out these West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North students whose submissions have been selected for publication in Aspirations, the literary magazine published by Mercer County Community College to recognize outstanding high school writers. Winners were selected by a panel of judges. These students had their work selected from hundreds of submissions from schools in Mercer County. Students were recognized at an awards program on April 27th and presented with a copy of Aspirations at that time. Early Dismissal From School

To be excused early from school a student must present a note, signed by a parent or guardian to the attendance office before 1st period on the day the excuse is to be used. At the time of the early dismissal, students must sign out in the attendance office and sign in if they are returning to school. The school administration recognizes only urgent reasons for dismissal. Such reasons include medical and motor vehicle appointments or illness after arrival at school which must first be verified by the school nurse. Other circumstances may be approved by the principal or assistant principal after consultation with parents.

Please be aware of the traffic pattern in front of the High School. The posted maximum speed at HSN is 15mph. The posted maximum speed in the community needs to be adhered to and will be enforced by the Plainsboro and West Windsor Police Departments. Please drive carefully and safely.

The Plainsboro Police Department continues to be actively involved in all aspects of the school and community. Dont be surprised if you see an officer or two in the building at any given time. Feel free to say hello and chat with them.

Where is your stuff?? We request that you talk to your son or daughter concerning using a lock to secure valuables while participating in Physical Education classes. Despite repeated warnings to lock up valuables during Physical Education classes, too many students continue to leave valuables such as money, jewelry, cell phones, IPods and mp3 players sitting out on benches or in lockers without locks while participating in Physical Education classes. The best place to secure your valuables is in your hall locker. Do not give your hall locker combination to anyone. We ask that your son or daughter utilize a combination lock to secure valuables while involved in Physical Education activities. In addition, lockers in the Physical Education locker rooms should only be used during a students Physical Education class period. At the end of Physical Education class, all students must remove their belongings and locks each day from the locker room. Thank you for your cooperation.

FAMILY VACATIONS 2009 - 2010

The following procedures regarding student make-up opportunities shall apply to absences for family vacations: 1. Students are to fill-out a Vacation Request Form from the attendance office, have it signed by a parent or guardian, all of their teachers and their assigned Assistant Principal. It should then be returned to the attendance office prior to vacation. 2. The classroom teacher will provide the student with appropriate assignments prior to the absence, if so requested by the student, parent or guardian. 3. Completion of assignments and/or tests shall take place within a reasonable period of time, to be established by the teacher after considering all aspects of the case. This shall not be less than an amount of time equal to the time missed. 4. Failure to complete the assignments and/or tests within the specified time shall result in the issuance of a failing grade for the assignment and/or test. 5. Responsibility for making arrangements to complete the missed assignments and/or tests shall rest with the student, parent or guardian. 6. Note: Vacation days and college visits are chargeable to the attendance record.

New Jersey Model United Nations Conference

In April six members of the High School North Model United Nations Club participated in the first-ever New Jersey MUN Conference, hosted by The College of New Jersey at the Wyndham Hotel and Conference Center in Plainsboro. The High School North delegation represented the nations of the Russian Federation, Germany and Pakistan. Rohan Iyengar and Rishab Gupta, working as a paired delegation, earned Best Delegation for their representation of the Russian Federation in the DISEC Committee. Anitha Ahmed and Sabhya Gupta earned Verbal Commendation awards for representing Germany and Russian Federation in the ECOSOC Committee, respectively. Additional participating delegates were Abhinav Dulur, representing Russian Federation in the UN Security Council and Henggao Cai, representing Pakistan in ECOSOC. We would like offer our congratulations to these students on their individual and collective achievements. The Model United Nations Club is advised by Mr. Joe Bosio and Mrs. Linda Dean.

Bus Pass Information

Starting in September 2010, bus pass information will be available on Infinite Campus. WW-P no longer will be mailing bus passes to students in Grades 1-12, but parents can look on Infinite Campus for bus information. Kindergarten students and preschool students will receive a letter with bus pass information and a bus pass badge. Bus pass information will be available on Infinite Campus beginning August 20, 2010. To access this information, log onto your account and on the left-hand side of the page, you will see an icon called Transportation. Click on this icon to review bus information. You will see the following information: In Bus In Time In Bus Stop Out Bus Out Time Out Bus Stop If you do not have an Infinite Campus account, you can create at account at any time you do not have to wait until the summer. Class of 2011 Senior Pictures

Lors Studio, our yearbook portrait photographer, will be holding senior portrait make-up appointments for those students who may have missed their original appointment in May. These appointments will be at High School North on the following dates: July 16th from 10 AM to 4 PM and July 23rd from 2 PM to 9 PM in the High School North Wrestling Room. Students will receive a mailing from the studio with an assigned time. Please be on the lookout for your appointment time package in the mail. Please be aware that it is through these appointments that our yearbook staff receives the senior photos used for the yearbook. We would like to make sure all seniors are included! Please take this appointment time seriously and do your best to make your appointment. Please keep in mindyou are under no obligation to purchase photographs, although they are a timeless keepsake of your years here at High School North. The yearbook staff does their best to include all seniors in our annual yearbook; please help in this endeavor by making your appointment. Students also have the option of having their portrait taken at Lors Studio in Union, New Jersey. Many past students have opted to do this and have been very happy with the results. High School North Places Second in the National Fed Challenge

The West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District is proud to announce that the High School North Fed Challenge team placed Second in the national competition. High School Norths Fed Challenge student team members are: Joanne Im, Parvez A. Garcia, Raman Quinn Maingi, Robin Li, and alternate Lekha Racharla. The team is led by Morton Levine. Each Fed Challenge team, consisting of three to five students, presents an analysis of the current state of the economy backed by current economic data and a monetary policy recommendation for the Federal Open Market Committee. Following the presentation, judges question each team about its presentation and knowledge of advanced macroeconomic theory. The winning Fed Challenge team from participating Federal Reserve Districts competes at the national competition in Washington, DC. John Weinberg, Senior VP and Research Director of the Research Department at the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, Daniel Copper, economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and Jamie McAndrews, EVP, Director of Financial Research, Research and Statistics of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, judged the national finals this year.

CUT POLICY
Please be advised that any student marked absent from a class will automatically be issued a cut and assigned a Saturday detention. For example, if a student is meeting with a guidance counselor or teacher, it is that students responsibility to get written notification from the teacher/guidance counselor to clear the cut issued. The student will have 24 hours to do this. After the 24 hours, notification will be mailed home of the assigned Saturday detention date. Three cuts in the same content area class will result in loss of credit in that class. Three cuts in any class will result in loss of co-curricular privileges including but not limited to: athletics, senior class trip, proms, club activities, dances, etc.

FRIDAY, June 11 SENIOR AWARDS ASSEMBLY A Senior Service Award Assembly will be held from 8:45 a.m. 9:45 a.m. in our Theater. At this time service awards, departmental, athletic and general academic recognitions are awarded. Parents wishing to attend this assembly should arrive at 8:35 a.m. MONDAY, June 14 END OF MP 4

TUESDAY, June 15 THURSDAY, June 17 FINAL EXAMS Final exams will be administered from 6/15-6/17. Please see included letter for details. THURSDAY, June 17 SENIOR CELEBRATION A Senior Celebration will be held in the Upper Dining Hall FOR SENIORS ONLY on June 17, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. All eligible seniors are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served. THURSDAY, June 17 CAP AND GOWN DISTRIBUTION Caps and gowns will be distributed during the second and third exam periods in the Upper Dining Hall to all seniors who have fulfilled their end-of-the-year obligations. Please Note: ALL OUTSTANDING OBLIGATIONS MUST BE CLEARED BEFORE SENIORS CAN RECEIVE THEIR CAP AND GOWN. Please ensure that these obligations are fulfilled on time. We will accept only cash or money orders. FRIDAY, JUNE 18 - 7:45 a.m. GRADUATION PRACTICE All seniors who are planning to participate in graduation must attend graduation practice, which is scheduled for Friday, June 18th. Seniors must report to the theater no later than 7:45 a.m. on that date. Seniors will be involved in graduation practice at HSN until 9:30 AM on Friday morning. FRIDAY, JUNE 18 - 12:00 p.m. GRADUATION! Seniors must assemble at the rear door of Sun National Bank Center (formerly Sovereign Bank Arena) at 10:45 a.m. A parking pass will be provided for admission to the Seniors & Faculty section in Parking Lot 2 off of So. Broad St. Parents will park in Lot 1 off of Hamilton Ave. From parking Lot 2 seniors and faculty will proceed to the rear of the arena to line up for procession. Appropriate dress will be required of all seniors participating in the graduation ceremony. Young men must wear a dress shirt, tie, long pants, shoes and socks. Young women must wear a dress or skirt and blouse or dress slacks and appropriate shoes. Please do not wear shorts.
