POSITION: CLOSES: SALARY: DEPARTMENT: PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER Open Until Filled $3,536 - $4,302 per month, DOQ, plus benefits Parks & Recreation JOB #13-04 TEAMSTERS (union) position
JOB SUMMARY: Under close supervision, cleans and maintains City parks, downtown planting areas and other locations; plants, sprays, fertilizes and maintains lawns, plants, trees, shrubs and landscaped areas; operates and maintains a variety of equipment. Incumbents in the Parks Maintenance Worker classification perform a variety of routine grounds maintenance work for City parks and facilities and assist with a variety of special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Methods, tools and materials used in cultivating and maintaining landscaped and related areas. Knowledge of greenhouse operations and identification and culture needs of annuals and perennials. Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding. Operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeeping. City and park rules and regulations.
Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of flowers, trees and shrubs. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Health and safety regulations. Oral and written communication skills.
Required Skill in: Performing a variety of maintenance work in the preparation and maintenance of park grounds, trees, shrubs and facilities. Performing general ground maintenance duties including mowing, edging, weeding and mulching. Utilizing tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance work. Learning schedules and procedures quickly. Operating light power and mechanical equipment used in the care and maintenance of trees, shrubs and landscaped areas. Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Utilizing herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers in a safe and effective manner. Understanding and following oral and written directions. Interacts well with staff, volunteers and citizens. Maintaining routine records. Observing health and safety regulations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma/GED Certificate and one year of experience in landscape maintenance that includes responsibility for maintaining flowers and flower beds, shrubs and turf, and operating related equipment and hand tools; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. LICENSES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid State of Washington Drivers License. Must have a clean driving record; a driving record check is required upon a conditional offer of employment. Ability to obtain a Washington State Public Pesticide Applicators License within 1 year of hire. First Aid/CPR and Flaggers Card within 1 year of hire. Must be able to successfully complete and pass a background check. Mandatory drug test subject to conditional job offer.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/HAZARDS: Environment: Indoor and outdoor work environment. Working in roadways and on moving equipment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors. Noise from equipment operation.
Physical Abilities: Hearing, speaking and otherwise communicating to exchange information in person or on the phone. Operating a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Reading and understanding a variety of materials. Sitting, standing, walking or otherwise positioning oneself for extended periods of time. Ascending/descending ladders and working from heights.
Lifting/carrying or otherwise moving or transporting up to 50 lbs. Reaching overhead, above shoulders and horizontally. Wearing proper personal protective equipment as required by department or City policy. Bending, kneeling or crouching, reaching overhead, above shoulders and horizontally or otherwise positioning one-self to accomplish tasks.
Hazards: Working around and with sometimes noisy machinery having moving parts. Chemical fumes from herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. Working at heights.
