Van Buren Public Schools Superintendent Mike Van Tassel talked about school building security during a recent Board of Education meeting. Van Tassel said emergency plans for a variety of contingencies have been in place for several years, including lockdown procedures among all school buildings and classrooms in the Van Buren Public Schools. He added that these procedures arent well-publicized, in order to enhance the security of students and staff in the schools. Administrative staff and building principals met before the school year began to discuss and confirm emergency response procedures. There are two drills each school year to

A commitment to more effective teaching of mathematics began in the Van Buren Public Schools in March 2012. The school board approved a threeyear contract for $445,000 with Carnegie Learning Inc., to introduce a new math program to McBride Middle School students in the seventh and eighth grades. These students are learning new ways of working with algebra and geometry. School board President Brent Mikulski said the program is migrating to a select number of sixth-graders at Owen Intermediate School, and to freshmen in Belleville High School. Eventually, the program will be used by all high school students.

ts an unusually warm afternoon in early January and Beverly Jenkins is cleaning her house. A lm crew is coming in a couple of days and the dwelling demands some extra attention. Jenkins, an author who has lived in Van Buren Township for the past 30 years, is getting ready to receive visitors who are making a documentary about the romance novel industry. As a popular writer in that genre, Jenkins is accustomed to a certain amount of attention, but, she admits, being included in a film project is a first. Yet with all the adoration from fans and professional acclaim, Jenkins, 61, is refreshingly approachable and absent of ego. Sipping coffee at her kitchen table, not far down the hall from the cluttered office where she writes, Jenkins whose just-released book Destinys Embrace has the word superstardom bursting in the cover blurb is comfortable and confident in a career thats been as rewarding as it was unexpected. All I wanted to do was work in a library, Jenkins says, a goal realized during and after her days

as a student at Michigan State University. After her husbands job whirled the couple from East Lansing to Big Rapids and ultimately Belleville in 1982, Jenkins spent time raising two children as a stay-at-home mom. As her kids went through the Van Buren school district, Jenkins was volunteering in the classroom, leading a Brownie troop the whole suburban thing, as she puts it. Jenkins the author emerged later while she was holding down a job at Pfizer. I was working at the reference desk and I was writing this story just for me, because there were no African-American (historical romance writers), she recalls. A co-worker who belonged to the Romance Writers of America read the story and urged Jenkins to pursue publication. The manuscript eventually drew favorable feedback from some publishers, but nobody wanted to step up to the plate. Set in the 19th century, the story featured free black folks living in a black township in Kansas ... and they didnt know what to do with it, Jenkins says. They didnt have a box to put it in.
