Resident fellow of the Transatlantic Relations Program and Editor-in-Chief of the DGAP Yearbook Biographical Information Before he joined the DGAP in 2006 he was research fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin (2002-2006), project leader at the Aspen Institute Berlin (2001), visiting scholar at the German-American Center (2000), consultant at the World Bank (1999), guest scholar at the Brookings Institution (1998-1999), congressional fellow of the American Political Science Association (1997-1998), and a member of the legislative staff in the US House of Representatives (1997-1998). He earned a Ph.D. in political science, sociology, and French cultural studies from the University of Passau. He also studied international business and cultural studies at the University of Passau and the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis.

Prof. Susan McManus


Professor at the University of Southern Florida (USF) and political analyst Biographical Information Dr. Susan A. MacManus, who received her M.A. from the University of Michigan and Ph.D. from Florida State University, is a Distinguished University Professor at USF in the Department of Government and International Affairs. For the last six election cycles, she has served as political analyst for WFLA NewsChannel 8. Since 2008, she has been a featured columnist on a widely-read Floridabased political website. WFLA TVs weekly Road to the White House-program on which MacManus appeared as a panelist was nominated for a Suncoast Emmy award in 2008. She has appeared on every major broadcast and cable television and radio network and been interviewed by major newspapers in Florida, the U.S., and abroad. In Florida, she is the most-quoted political scientist and has written lots of analytical books about voting groups such as Young v. Old: Generational Combat in the 21st Century? and Targeting Senior Voters. As co-author she has published together with Thomas R. Dye several books on Florida politics.(Politics in States and Communities, 13th ed., Florida's Politics, 2nd ed.)

Dr. Thomas Gutschker


Journalist for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and moderator Biographical Information Dr. Thomas Gutschker is the editor in charge of foreign policy and security issues at Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, the Sunday edition of FAZ. In the past ten years he has been travelling extensively across the world, including countries such as North Korea and Afghanistan. He serves as a frequent commentator and analyst not only in his own paper but also for public TV channel Phoenix. His career in journalism started in 2001 when he joined FAZs foreign desk where he dealt with European issues. In 2003 he became the foreign editor of Rheinischer Merkur, a weekly newspaper based in Bonn. He rejoined FAZ when that paper stopped publishing at the end of 2010. Thomas Gutschker holds a Ph. D. in political science, he wrote his thesis on Aristotelian thought in 20th century political philosophy (Aristotelische Diskurse, Metzler-Verlag, 2002). He has studied political science, philosophy and comparative literature at the University of Augsburg and American University in Washington D.C
