Principals Message
A Kind, Caring Community of Kids! , 2012

As you know, BE KIND is one of three parts of our Bobcat Code (Be Kind. Be Safe. Be Your Best.). We teach students about kindness at Ventana Vista explicitly throughout the year, and on a day-to-day basis when teachable moments present themselves. MARCH 23, 2012

NEWSLETTER OF VENTANA VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Recently, a school-wide assembly reinforced the message of kindness at our school. Students watched a video about the power of random acts of kindness; they enjoyed a skit put on by staff members with a lesson about giving of oneself; and they heard about our Student Councils work with the Bens Bells project (see www.bensbells.org for more information). , 2010 Every staff member was given some kindness coin necklaces to pass on to students who demonstrate kind acts. Students are then to be on the lookout for others to pass their necklaces onto. Some specific acts of kindness toward our greater Tucson community to note: XZXC0000 Just before the holidays, our third grade team held a Read-a-Thon. They raised a total of $1,839.40! The project related to their study of social studies, as well, and the 09 students chose to split their proceeds to benefit two local organizations. They donated $886.60 to the Community Food Bank and $952.80 to Make Way for Books. Way to go 3rd grade! APRIL Students in Srta. Acuas kindergarten classes have also recently participated in 24, 2009 projects to benefit our greater community. They collected over 300 toys, books, and DVDs for Casa de los Nios and the Diamond Children's Hospital at UMC in December. In January they collected 250 pounds of food for the Community Food Bank. The food collection project related to their study of mathematics. As items were brought in, they put the cans in groups of 10, counting their way to 100 (and , 2008 beyond!).

Coming up later this monthVentana Vista students will show their kindness toward our school. On the afternoon of Tuesday, February, 19 (NOT an early release day), the entire school will participate in one or more service projects around the school: cleaning classrooms, picking up trash, shelving books, making signs, etc. We love our school, and all share the responsibility for taking care of it! Thank you for all that you do at home to encourage your children to demonstrate kindness at school, and throughout their lives! Tucson Festival of Books We LOVE reading (and will have fun with it during a week-long celebration in March)! The Tucson Festival of Books on the University of Arizona campus is coming up, as well (March 910). Enclosed in this newsletter is the Childrens Schedule of Events during the festival for your reference. If you plan to go, pick up a free I LOVE CFSD button from our office to wear (available end of February), and stop by to visit us in the main area at booth #473! Open Enrollment for School Year 2013-2014

Pursuant to A.R.S. 15-816 Catalina Foothills School District will begin its open enrollment procedures for the 2013-2014 school year effective December 1, 2012. The law requires every Arizona school district to follow a prescribed procedure and timetable for admitting out-ofdistrict transfer students and resident transfer students (those who live in the District but are attending a school outside the attendance area of their residence). All students who currently attend CFSD schools and reside in other districts, and all CFSD resident students who are attending a different school than they would based on their residence, are impacted by this law. We require that all open enrollment students apply for admission each year. Therefore, if your child is a resident transfer (open enrollment) student and you want him/her to continue in that capacity, or if your child resides outside of the district and you want him/her to continue to attend a CFSD school next year, please complete an application form between

December 1, 2012, and February 28, 2013. applications and information regarding the application process are on the district web site, www.cfsd16.org (as of December 1, 2012), or

Language Immersion in CFSD

In CFSD, we believe in developing all students cultural competence. World Language instruction is part of our core curriculum. At the elementary level, students either participate in our K-5 Spanish program (taught by a specialist for 120 min./wk.) OR in one of our Language Immersion programs.

Spanish Immersion
at Ventana Vista
started in 2009 Gr. K-4 for 2013-14 Open to K-4 students
(students entering gr. 2-4 must meet language criteria)

Mandarin Immersion
at Sunrise Drive
starting in 2013 Gr. K-1 for 2013-14 Open to K-1 students

The overall goals of our Language Immersion programs are for students to: meet or exceed academic achievement levels in all areas of the district curriculum; acquire a high level of communicative and academic prociency in English and the target language (Spanish or Mandarin); gain an appreciation of other cultures and a deeper understanding of their own culture; and increase capacity for creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

For more information click on the Spanish Immersion or Mandarin Immersion link in the Express Lane on the CFSD website: www.cfsd16.org. Call for dates of any informational evenings for parents (Ventana Vista - 209-8000; Sunrise Drive - 209-7900), or nd them on the schedule at the Open House/Tour Opportunities link in the Express Lane on the CFSD website.
