FROM THE PASTOR
HOW SINCERE ARE YOU? Just how sincere are you? How honest, how pure, how reliable, how trustworthy are you? Think about those important characteristics and consider the original meaning of the word sincere. Sincere is an old Latin word that meant without wax. It originated when ancient Romans needed a word to verify that a piece of porcelain or pottery was whole, without cracks or flaws which had been covered over with hot wax. Those wanting sincere pieces would hold the object up to the sun to let light shine through them to make certain they were not defective. One suspects that the light of Christ shining through most of us might reveal embarrassing flaws in our character, yet no doubt we would also discover that there was a lot of soundness as well. The goal is to move away from insincerity and hypocrisy and allow Christ to help us become completely whole and sincere. (Copied)

One does not become a Christian by doing a good deed a day, nor by go-getting for religion, nor by engaging in economic and political reform movements, even though these things are done from the noblest of human motives. A Christian is one who, believing that Christ is the Son of God has that Christ-life in his soul.

SUNDAY MORNING 300

When young Kelli said her prayers each night, she would bless every family member, every friend and pet (current or past). Toward the end of her prayer, shed say, And all girls. One night her father asked his daughter why she always ended that way. Because, she replied, everybody else always finishes their prayers by saying, All men.

PASTORS JONATHONS WORD OF THE WEEK The other day, Ray Lewis played his last game in Baltimores stadium. After 17 wildly successful years, hes retiring. At the end of the game, he took off his jersey to reveal a shirt that said, Psalm 91. I smiled at that. But deep down in my heart, I thought, Yeah, but that guy was part of a double homicide. Whatever. And there it is. I dont believe in grace. Or, I believe in it for me, and people who have sinned like me. But theres a whole lot of people I dont think deserve grace. The problem is that, when we talk about grace, we often dont use one of the most important words to describe it. We say, Grace is powerful and free and beautiful and amazing. But we leave out one of the key descriptions of grace. The truth is, grace is offensive. Grace offends in its generosity. Grace offends in its availability. Grace offends in its depth. Grace offends in its willingness to be controlled or own or manipulated. Grace is offensive, and when I see people who I think dont deserve it, I am reminded of ultimately how desperately I still need it. ---Jon Acuff Jonathon
