Snowball
by Bergen Van Riper Staff Writer Its that time of the year again when girls go out shopping for their dresses, students begin to wonder what Spirit Week will have in store for them this winter and many excited for the Snowball Dance. During Spirit Week, a ping pong tournament will be held. You can sign up for the tournament outside room 1230. The tournament will be held on Wednesday Febuary 2 and Thursday Febuary 3. There will be a trophy to whoever wins. The trophy winner will have his or her name immortalized and displayed in the school until next years champion. The ping pong balls and paddles will be providpod, for $10, like homecoming. Im excited for the dance, says 9th grader Brennan Bryan. Unlike homecoming, the Snowball wasnt a traditional thing. About 3 years ago they started having a winter dance because students kept asking for one. The Snowball is a winter formal. The snowball is continued every year because students have taken a like to it. The response has been great, said English teacher, Mr.Poquette, We always have a good turnout.

Graduating at semeter
Justin Vandermolen Staff Writer To graduate at Fond du lac High School students need to have a total of 23 credits, and the only required credits include 4 credits of English, 2 credits of Mathematics, 2 credits of Science, 3 credits of Social Studies, 1.5 credits of Physical Ed., .5 credits of Health, and 10 credits of Electives. However you will need to pay attention to the colleges that you are applying for, said Senior Tyler Cizek. This is because they might have different required credits to attend their university or college. If you manage to take care of the required credits to graduate from our school plus enough other electives to have 23 credits at the end of the first semester you are capable of graduating early. The most effective way to set up this early graduation is to simply just make an appointment with your counselor and let them know that you are interested in the opportunity, says Norah Olig, the parent of an early graduate. Your counselor will ask you some simple questions like why or what you will be doing instead of attending the high school. Make sure that your parents are encouraging your decision so they can also get in contact with the school and help you out. Remember its your education and your overall decision. With the idea of ending your high school education a little early comes more responsibility in the real world and also a great relief of pressure.
Graduating early has become more popular this year. With nine students taking full advantage of the opportunity, the decision to make their last year short wasnt an easy one. Id rather be working a full time job instead of taking pointless elective classes that dont concern me or my future, said Senior Kyle Mand. Some students are graduating early for more reasons than just being sick of school though. I wanted to start taking college courses as soon as I could. Graduating early was the best decision Ive made in high school, says Senior Stephanie Treptow.

Valentines Day, for those of you who are unaware, is February 14. It seems to be a nice day to recognize lovers, friends, family, etc. Some people might receive chocolates, cards or maybe even flowers. However, its most important to give those significant others that attention they wouldnt normally get on a regular basis. Though to some of the students at Fondy High may not be as ecstatic about this holiday, some teachers follow certain traditions. I like to text my family 143, says Mr. Sagen, gym teacher. For those of you who dont know what 143 means, its another way to say I love you. Mr.
Sagen has been married to his wife, Erron, for 26 years. He also sends his Mommy flowers and gives his daughters a card. I wasnt really planning anything, says Tyler Miller, Junior. He decided maybe shopping and going out to eat sounded like a possible plan. He and his girlfriend, Taylor Penning, have been together for a year and two months. Its not important, they just made it up for some reason says Tyler Cizek, Senior. Tyler is one of the many people who think Valentines Day is just another day. By hearing from friends it is not uncommon for people to feel this way, especially when having no one to celebrate with.
Lovers Holiday
I encourage you to also appreciate the people you love, like moms and dads, not just that special someone. I think it is important to recognize everyone that you love on this holiday and I think thats what people are forgetting. Its not just a holiday for lovers, but a holiday for love, says Mackenzie Hernandez, senior. Mackenzie looks on the bright side of the situation. Most people look at it this way, Hernandez adds. If you want to walk down the hall holding hands, thats cool. But theres really no need to show everyone your dating, says Zach Peltonen, Senior. Its safe to say that some couples in this school go over the top.

IN THE DIM LIGHTING OF THE ROOM, she sketched the shading of a table cloth laying on an easel. Bethanie, who was assigned to draw this piece, was taking her time to make all the stripes the right thickness. She could see her eraser get smaller and smaller as she erased her mistakes and aimed for perfection. Paying attention to all the fine detail is essential. After sketching all the stripes, she began to add the shading. She uses more pressure in some areas to create a darker look and barely puts her pencil down on the paper to create a very light shadow of grey. Growing up, Bethanie was always doodling pictures. She found it entertaining and fun. Since it was something she was interested in, she partook in many art classes that the high school offers such as Art Foundations, Painting 1-3, Ceramics 1, Drawing 1 currently and Drawing 2 next semester. Bethanie is a social butterfly but she works hard, said her current art teacher Mrs. Birschbach. She has had Bethanie as a student for two years now. A few of her pieces were featured in the schools art show last year. She had a self portrait, a painting of shoes, and a still life picture. The pieces for the show are chosen by quality, skill and class level. I was very honored to have my artwork displayed in the show, said Bethanie. Cheerful and outgoing, Bethanie Harris is a senior here at Fondy High. She stays positive with a bright smile on her face. She likes to dress fancy with her heals and decked out in jewelry from her ears to rings on her fingers. She is also very social and caring. Bethanie likes to take the time to help others whenever she can. Bethanie is a very loving person, said Gina Carlone, one of Bethanies close friends. I like how the bright colors she uses on her artwork reflect her personality, said Claudia Tryon, a student in Bethanies art class. I would describe my artwork as very feminine, said Bethanie. She likes her work to reflect her personality and other strong characteristics that she has. Her favorite thing to include in her artwork is butterflies. Bethanie finds them to be very beautiful and a great representation of her. Other things she likes to include are shoes and colors. She likes to use pinks and yellows in her work because they are bright and girly. Bethanie does a great job on her self portraits.
The shading is done perfectly, and the finished product looks just like her, said Billy Harris, Bethanies younger brother. After high school she plans on going to college, where she is interested in taking some sort of therapeutic art class. She plans on pursuing a career in the medical field. Art is more of a hobby, so I dont really have any plans to pursue it as career, said Bethanie.

Fondy Highs German teacher, Mrs. Keck, recovers from a disastrous house fire
explained, thankfully. Everything she received was greatly appreciated, because all she had was nothing: 100% of all belongings were lost. A monetary donation was presented to her through the staff Family Fund which she used mostly to cover costs of food, as well as saving a portion of it for the long haul ahead of her. Frau Keck was also bestowed a sum of money from the staff at Waters school and secretaries at the central office as well. I know it sounds crude to take money people offer me, but I need it for a day to day basis. I am literally taking clothes off of peoples backs, and I have no choice. But Im so grateful to know there are people who care enough to want to help, Keck says. Along with supplying essential needs, Frau Kecks friends and students were on a mission to lift her spirits. She was sent plenty of cards, invited to spend Christmas with over 15 different families, and was even visited by six of her former students. Regardless of these treasured acts, a letter written by a former student meant the most. The letter revealed that he had had some troubles in high school, and she was the one person that could cheer him up; it was now her turn to be cheered up, and he did just that with Cardinal Columns
by Sydney Inks Layout Director For most of those at Fondy High, December 13 was just a typical day. For Frau Keck, it was too, until she received a call to her classroom at 1:00 p.m. It was the Oshkosh Fire Department delivering the news that her house was on fire, and she needed to come home immediately. As soon as she hung up the phone, Keck bolted to the office, relayed the news, instructed administration to find a sub for her classes and rushed to Oshkosh. As soon as she pulled up to her street, she could not proceed any further due to the two fire engines and several police cars blocking the street. It was not until several days later, when Frau Keck could finally enter her home, that she realized the severity of the damage to everything she owned and to her home, which was deemed completely unrepairable. Her beloved pet rabbit, two birds and one cat had been lost to the fire, along with her tremendous collection of books, every piece of clothing she owned and all sentimental knick knacks. We got the call at 12:58 p.m., according to John Holland, the Public Education Specialist at the Oshkosh Fire Department, but when we arrived at the scene, we did not see a fire. We only saw smoke. It only took a few minutes to put out the fire but it was evident when we got into the house that it had been burning for hours before we had gotten there and there was a lot of smoke and heat damage. The day after the fire, Mr. Wiltzius showed up to Frau Kecks doorstep in order to offer condolences on behalf of Fondy High and himself. First, Mr. Wiltzius gave her a hug that said it all. He reassured me that my classes are covered; this crisis comes first, and when I come back everything will be great, says Keck. This took care of my worries about my students at that time. It meant a lot. Once Frau Keck returned to Fondy on the following Monday, she was overwhelmed with the genuine concern of fellow co-workers and students. The staff had mobilized immediately when they heard what had happened to me, and the day I returned to Fondy I received bags and bags of everyday supplies ranging from clothes to food and tooth brushes to combs, Keck 10

a heartfelt letter. I am physically here, but my mind is still at home, Keck admits, and thanks to my students, it has been much easier to get through the days even when I am distracted. Immediately we wanted to know what to do; how could we help, said Erin Weston, a fourth year student of Kecks. There were about 12 of us who got together as soon as it happened and made a Schultueten filled with candy and a letter from each of us. A Schultueten is a sort of cone filled with goodies to celebrate the first day of a new school year in the German Culture. Neighbors of mine have also been extremely generous, Keck went on, either they have had me over for dinner, help carry furniture out of my house, or let me stay in their basement for the time being. Granted, insurance will cover the loss of her house and belongings, but it is still a long and tedious ordeal to have the information of all belongings documented in preparation for the claim. You must write down the name of the item, price, brand, and date you bought the item in order for it to be counted for insurance. Madame Daniels, the head of the Foreign Language Department, was absent from the school the day of Frau Kecks fire. enior Marty Ryan was first inspired to act after watching the 1925 silent film, The Gold Rush. When I perform, I want to make people feel the way I felt when I watched that movie, he says. Marty then explains that the star of the film, Charlie Chaplin, was known for his facial expressions. If you dont have facial expressions, if you dont have the body communication when youre acting, you cant get the point across of who the character is.

Some may recognize Marty from the latest school musical, Pirates of Penzance, where he plays the Major General Stanley. Hes also been in many other productions done here at Fondy, such as Harvey, You Cant Take It With You, Feiffers People, and Bye Bye Birdie. Its been a great tremendous honor, Marty says on his success during high school, and its kind of a bittersweet feeling [knowing its coming to an end]. Marty will also be starring in the upcoming play, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, as Mr. Tumnus.
ALL OUR DREAMS CAN COME TRUE, IF WE HAVE THE COURAGE TO PURSUE THEM.
Hes one of the best actors Ive had the pleasure to work with, Fondy Highs production director, Mr. Wilson, says of Marty. He has been acting since he was five, and continued through middle school and onto high school. I love entertaining people, I love making people forget about their problems, and its something I want to do for the rest of my life. Some of Martys inspirations, other than Charlie Chaplin, include Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, and Ryan Gosling. While he has applied to many colleges, such as Stevens Point, Oshkosh, Ripon and Parkside, Marty has strong aspirations to attend Columbia University in Chicago for acting and get a job at the comedy club Second City as well.

Indie rock and other filth

Theres so many genres that youve probably never even imagined. Billions of bands youve never even considered. Tunes and melodies youve never even dreamed of. Well start you off with something basic, like Bombay Bicycle Club and Cajun Dance Party. They have a pretty cheerful tune for the most part. Not to mention they each originate from Lon-
don, therefore the vocals are accented with a British tone. Freelance Whales, Miniature Tigers, and Ra Ra Riot all originate from New York. Ra Ra Riot has more of a drum sound, if you will. Its more of a forced noise. Miniature Tigers and Freelance Whales, on the other hand, have a lighter sense. Their music has more of a ping to it. If youre looking for purely instrumental, then check out Slow Six. Their songs usually end up on the longer side. Tons of strange instruments are used for a truly indescribable sound. Its seriously incredible. Its the kind of music where you can just lie there and let yourself slip away. Now were going to get into some pretty obscure stuff. Hudson Mohawke is also, for the most part, instrumental. It has a hint of Passion Pit because theres a lot of odd, quirky noises and ticks. Its pretty mixed up and strange, but its intense. Sufjan Stevens is also strange, but its...slower. Some songs have more of a hint of theatrical, classic Disney sound, but not quite. Its a mix between a professional orchestra and a four-year-old pounding on a keyboard. Its amazing, nonetheless. The Antlers are very soft and gentle with the occasional OOMF. Each lyric pours emotion straight into your heart.
Youll listen once, and youll just have to keep listening again and again. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is interesting. Its also fun to say. Try it. Theres also The Postal Service, Rural Alberta Advantage, and Two Door Cinema Club. Hopefully youll learn that theres more than one type of music out there. If you dont like it, simply dont listen to it. However, once you find that band you really, truly enjoy, its like a baby discovering it

Hollywood Marriages:
By Ashley Scarpita Staff Writer
arriage. A social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments and religious ceremonies. In other words, marriage is a commitment between two lovers to stand by each others side through thick and thin for the rest of their lives. (Thats what the vows say anyway...) However, celebrities seem to have a misunderstanding of what marriage is. See, celebrities seem to think they can do what ever the hell they want, because theyre rich and famous. They take advantage of whats suppossed to be a time for two people that love each other to commit to one another. I think its human nature to hope for the best when people decide to get married. But when you hope for the best for a Hollywood couple and trust that maybe this one could last, they always come back to slap you in the face with a divorce. One that comes to my mind the most is the end to the Pitt/Aniston marriage. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt divorced in 2005 after four and a half years of marriage while he was starring in the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith with his future lover Angelina Jolie. Much like the cool kids at high school, we look up to celebrities in both admiration and disrespect. Although we cant help but get wrapped up in a beautiful story of celebrities finding their soul mates and falling in love, we also cant resist the ugly separation of what appeared to be a perfect marriage. Just because we as a public admire celebri-
the cameras turn into a nightmare once the lights of the public glare was gone? How long did it take the two to realize that they completely rushed into a marriage? These are just some of the questions that come up when we look at famous celebrity divorces. Sometimes celebrity divorces are completely predictable like the 10 days it took for basketball bad boy Dennis Rodman and Baywatch babe Carmen Electra to realize that their celebrity marriage was a bad idea. Kim Kardashians marriage with basketball star Kris Humphries lasted just 72 days. Although the divorce papers say it was because of irreconcilable differences, people have strong belief that the marriage was a scam and that they got married just to make money on the wedding. The hottest trends from here to Hollywood! KAyLA MArcoe, StAff Writer
WINTER FASHION TRENDS are heating up, making more appearances than ever in the midst of this not-so-harsh and unusual Wisconsin winter. Combat boots, chunky knit sweaters, and tights are a big part of this winters attire. From trends as casual and repeated as Ugg boots, to over the top faux fur pieces and over the knee boots, the trends we see around Fondy are definitely a mimic of the those that we see on chic celebrities. Now kick off your wedged mid-calf boots, snuggle up in your asymmetrical cardigan, and read on! Sweaters, sweaters, sweaters! They really are a big part of winter fashion for 20112012. Off-the-shoulder sweaters, long sweaters, printed sweaters, anything goes! Theyre perfect for pairing with some leggings or layering with a cute leather
jacket. Faux fur is also making a statement, not so much around Fondy, but definitely in Hollywood! Bring the trend local by layering a fur vest over your favorite long sleeve tee or wearing a fur coat to keep the not-socold at the moment winter chill out. I sincerely hope that all of the celebrities are using faux fur, so that no animals were injured in the making of this trend. Leggings, jeggings, and sweatpants... oh my! Well, not really sweatpants, although that seems to be a favorite around Fondy high! Leggings and jeggings, (a super soft and comfy jean/legging combination) are really making an entrance this winter, and why not, when you can be comfortable AND fashionable AT THE SAME TIME?! Bodycon dresses and skirts are also a favorite, paired
with your favorite pair of tights, they make a perfect outfit! Calling all equestrians! Your boots arent only good for riding your horse, anymore! You can now shamelessly wear them out and about! As an equestrian myself, I think it is super exciting to see us getting some recognition in the fashion world, with the riding boot trend prominently standing out as one of the most popular this season. Another big part of winter footwear is anything with a wedge. Ranging from wedged over the knee boots to wedged combat boots, they are the perfect way to complete any outfit, make you look like a biker chick that could kick somebodys bootie, or just the perfect accessory to pair with your favorite pair of jeggings. Speaking of combat boots, weve been
seeing them everywhere! Pair them with a super girly top, you have just the right amount of contrast to make them work! This season is also all about the accessories. Large earrings are the norm, and the feathers that people were wearing in their hair over the summer? Well, now theyre wearing them on their ears, also. Earrings are the perfect way to complete an outfit and add just the right amount of sparkle to your face. Bold lipstick is another fun trend, and when worn with the right hair and makeup, it can make for a chic and respected look! Stores like Forever 21, American Eagle, and Shoedazzle.com are great places to find inexpensive trendy winter pieces. So log onto your computer, grab a cup of hot cocoa, and shop, shop, shop!
