State awards WISD $6.5 million to support Willow Run-Ypsilanti unified school district
The largest share of a Michigan Department of Education (MDE) $10 million grant will go to Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD)to support the unification of Willow Run Community Schools and Ypsilanti Public Schools. The MDE grant is reserved for school districts in Michigan that have consolidated services or fully merged. Notification of the $6.5 million grant award came late Friday, February 1, 2013 and WISD Superintendent Scott Menzel was elated with the news. To say were excited is an understatement, Menzel said. There are an exorbitant amount of expenses associated with merging two districts. Curriculum, technology and operating systems will have to be audited and aligned; inventories and analysis of best practices will be conducted and the sheer manpower of closing down two separate districts and launching a new one is labor intensive. The state has indicated that the grant is being awarded with conditions and those details will be finalized in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, Menzel said a burden has been lifted. We can forge ahead with confidence, not wondering if there is funding to perform the thousands of details that are involved with this magnitude of work, Menzel said. Were grateful to State Superintendent Michael Flanagan for standing by us and delivering on the commitment to see us through this phase of development and launch. Menzel also acknowledged the support of State Representatives David Rutledge and Bill Rogers and the numerous educational partners and Ypsilanti area community members who have and are volunteering to bring consolidation to fruition. Ypsilanti is a can-do community and we have witnessed a resilience and passion that is remarkable, Menzel said. The awarding of this grant is a confirmation that a dynamic and extraordinary educational system will be built. -30-
