CAMPAIGNERS against the proposed development of a Hythe beach popular with local people have been buoyed by the success of a similar cause along the coast.
A planning inspector recently declared a beach at Newhaven in East Sussex should be classed as a village green and open to locals, against the wishes of its French owners. Protestors are using the same tactic of applying for village-green status in the hope of preventing the building of 69 homes, a fishmongers and restaurant on the character-rich Fishermans Beach off West Parade. David Plumstead, one of the organisers of a 1,000-signature petition to Shepway council, which partly owns the land, said: This sets a clear precedent that a beach can be designated as a village green and amounts to This is public open space keep your hands off. The French-owned Newhaven Port And Properties had closed the towns only sandy beach in 2008, claiming it was a health and safety hazard. But a planning inspector ruled in favour of the residents after they compiled more than 1,000 family holiday-snaps dating back 80 years to show it had been used by both parents and grandparents. An NPP spokesman said it was considering legal action to appeal against the ruling and the decision has still to be approved by East Sussex County Council. LEAS CLIFF GETS THE BLUES


Guitarist Joe Bonamassa brought his rock and blues-style playing to Folkestone on Saturday, and a sell-out crowd at the Leas Cliff Hall witnessed one of the best shows performed there for a long time. Opening the UK leg of a Europe-US tour, the New York bluesman pulled out all the stops to put on a thrilling virtuoso display.
