DECK PROJECT Scope We are Saturday 8 July 2000.

You have been commissioned to build a backyard deck of 8 x 12, treated wood, including a 3 high handrail and a two-step access. The deck will be watersealed, and ready for use for an afternoon party on Saturday 22 July 2000 starting at 12:00. This party is in honour of a visit by your mother-in-law, whose role traditionally includes approval of such major projects. Schedule The building of this deck will follow a classical Design/Purchase/Construct pattern. Youd prefer (and will initially try to plan) to get started on Monday morning, to allow yourself a little rest ahead of time. In the Design Phase, you expect to take 2 days to Measure and Design the deck, including researching alternative designs and ideas and finalizing a concept. Then, you will take 3 days to Produce Drawings , including the bill of materials. In the meantime, you will spend about 4 hours to Contact Friends, i.e. phoning, visiting and generally harassing them into helping. The Purchase Phase will require 3days to Acquire Materials, (including purchase and delivery of supplies, borrowing tools and reserving rental post-hole digger). You expect to be able to get a 'go-ahead' to start purchasing, based on the impact of the 1st days' production of drawings. The help of several people will be required during the Construction Phase, to Construct Footings and to Construct Deck. Construct Footings will include digging the necessary holes to the required depth, pouring concrete and placing 4x4 supports. This will take a weekend day and will require the help of a Special Consultant. Construct Deck will be done after a two-day curing period, with the help of 3 Other Friends (unemployed) who are available during the following week. You expect to be able to do Construct Deck within 1 day, based on having 3 'Other Friends' plus yourself. You will complete the Construction Phase by placing a coat of Stain (yourself - one day) which will be dry after 24 hours. This will be followed by a day to 'Install Lights'. Resources You will be involved as required in all of the work, on an 8-hour per day basis. Your Special Consultant, and Other Friends, will also be working on an 8-hour basis. Your Special Consultant is only available on weekends, whereas your Other Friends do not do weekends.

Costs You will be charging your time at a nominal $10/hour, on the understanding that the proceeds you earn will go toward new golf clubs. You will be giving your friends $100 for each day of work, plus keeping aside $20/h for overtime pay as necessary. Your Special Consultant charges $100/hour. Based on information gathered on similar decks, you expect material costs of approximately $2,300. The rental of the post-hole digger is $120/day used. Total cost of the project cannot exceed $5,000 without serious repercussions. QUESTIONS Enter the above data into MSProject, applying what you learned about WBS, task types, durations, calendars, resource assignments, cost types, etc. Based on the database you construct: 1. As it currently stands, can you expect to finish the deck in time for the party? Do you have any project float time? Any particular risks which could jeopardize the project success? 2. Does your schedule have any resource overallocation? 3. What are the total project estimated costs? How much contingency buffer exists to cover risk measures such as overtime, extra hiring, estimating error, work overruns, unforeseens etc? 4. By the end of the project how much money will you expect to have earned (of your own time) toward your clubs? 5. Illustrate your answers with appropriate MS Project report(s) (Views/Tables). 6. Adjust your plan to address the above issues. (Note there are many possible options in terms of spitting tasks, adding resources, using overtime..). Illustrate your revised plan with appropriate MS Project report(s) (Views/Tables).
