This is Catholic Schools Week!


Catholic Schools across the country are celebrating Catholic Schools Week. This years theme for the week is Catholic Schools Raise the Standards referring to our academically challenging value based education. This event gives us pause to thank you our parents - for making sacrifices to educate your child at SJB. I also want to thank our dedicated teachers who bring a faith filled education to our students. We are also blessed to have a supportive pastor and generous parishioners. Yesterday was certainly Student Appreciation Dayan extra two hours at home or sleeping ina great sock hop in the afternoon and no homework! Socksthanks for sending your children in with sockswe have socks galore! We will be collecting socks for Veterans through this week. Socks will be given to three Veteran Hospitals in our area. Today we gathered together to say the Rosary for Peace in the World. We also managed to get in a few PE Open House classes.

WEDNESDAY
PE Open House Grades 1,2,4,6 Times: 10:40 6th, 12:45 2nd, 1:30 1st, 2:10 4th

THURSDAY- FAMILY DAY


Open House for SJB Parents 8:30 10:45AM Liturgy hosted by Grade 2 11AM o Families sit together pews will be labeled alphabetically. Lunch following liturgy. Grades 2 and 3 provide desserts.

FRIDAY SPIRIT DAY


Students wear 50th Anniversary shirt or any SJB T-Shirt Foul Shooting Contest 11AM All are welcome! Kid Nite Bingo! 6:30-9PM (K-2 must be accompanied by an adult)

Please return your Re-registration forms. They are due Thursday, 1/31. Purchase Arts and Academic boards by 2/1. Battle of Box Tops runs through 1/31. The Uniform Bank is OPEN- if you are in need of shirts/jumpers/skirts/pants please check the bins. They are located in the stairwell leading up to the gym. See flyer. LIBRARY NEWS BAD NEWS GOOD NEWS


Please return all SJB library books. Bad newsthe library system crashed just before Christmas! The good news is that it is almost fixed. Mrs. DalMolin, Ms. Schwab and many volunteers have been working to re-inventory all the books so we can get the system up and running again. More good newsour library database has moved from a server to the cloud. If your child has a book at home, please return. There is amnesty on these books..NO FINES!! Please return them ASAP!!!

VALENTINE'S DAY AT SJB


Valentines Day is just two weeks away. The Class of 2013 keeping the tradition alive designs and colors, handmade Valentine's Cards. Orders are now being taken. Here is how it works: o Students order using the enclosed form o 8th Graders fill the orders and give them to your child o Students take the Valentines homeadd a message and the first and last name and grade of the recipient. o Students return completed Valentines to 8th grade by February 13 th. o 8th grader deliver the Valentine to every student on Thursday, February 14th with a Hershey Kiss o Proceeds from this project helps finance the 8th grade class trip. Hot Lunch is also on Valentine's Day this year which doesn't happen very often. I am sure the Hot Lunch Bunch will have something special for the kids. Wear red/pink with your uniforms.

SPRING PLAY IS PETER PAN!


Mrs. Tervo and Mrs. Flanagan announced to the 7 th and 8th graders last Wednesday that this years spring show is Peter Pan! It has never been done on the SJB stage. Mark you calendar for Friday, April 26 th. Auditions will be next week. The Peter Pan Snack Shop will open (to all students) after rehearsals begin.

WENDY'S FUNDRAISER FOR GRETCHEN WEICHBROD SCHOLARSHIP FUND


Friday, 2/8 dismissal is at noon. Come have lunch at the Colesville Wendy's so we can earn money for the newly named Gretchen Weichbrod Scholarship Fund. The fund will earn 10% of the total receipts from lunch. Let's have a big turnout and start this scholarship off with a bang. See attached flyer.

BAND NEWS
3/10- Advanced Band Festival at St. John's College High School 4/29-Band trip to Kings Dominion- chaperones needed. Please contact Mrs. Tifford if you can chaperone. tiffordband@me.com This will be the first out of state competition for any Advanced Band from SJB.

REMINDERS
Yearbook Ads and/or Congratulatory Messages are due 2/14.

Casino Night - 2/9, 7-11PM. Tickets are on sale. Prize donations needed. See flyers attached. Please sign and return the report card envelopes. Creative Writing Awards will be rescheduled for next week. Details to follow.

LAST WEEK'S OPEN HOUSE


Fridays Open House was a big success with 33 interested families touring our school. Donna Moore and Jim Iannone and members of the Hospitality Committee provided refreshments and Michelle Smith (alumni parent) coordinated tours. Our tour guides in addition to Donna, Jim, and Michelle included Deb and Glenn Heinle, Holly Nguyen, Angeline Tran, Kim Hoefling, Abbie OConnor, Susanne Fitzpatrick, Jackie Dugroo, and Tarina Johnson. Thanks everyone!

LED BY THE SPIRIT UPDATE


45% of our school families have participated in the Led by the Spirit Campaign. Our goal is 100% participation. We are almost at $600,000 in pledges. Please help us get to our goal of $660,000. Every dollar counts! Please make a gift of any size. If you have already made a gift, thank you, thank you, thank you.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE?


Do you buy groceries? Buy them with gift cards purchased from SJB & support our scholarship fund. Giant, Shoppers or Shop Rite grocery cards are available. Participation rate from last week was 7.6%. The scholarship fund grew by $71. Look for the order forms in your folder and place your order. Order on Wednesday and you will receive the cards by Friday. Sign up for lunch duty. See link above. Save Box Tops and used ink cartridges. Dont throw those Sunday coupons away. Send them to Kevin Clark or the school office. We are able to get free items for a food bank in West Virginia that our school helps to support each year. Plan to attend activities during Catholic Schools week. Buy a ticket to Casino Night.

Athletic Ministry Meeting Open Forum- Monday, 2/4/13- 6:30-7:30PM in the Study across from school office. All are welcome to come and share their thoughts.

Ed McCormack, President of HSA and father of Julia18 and Nena16 will be ordained a Deacon on June 22, 9:30AM, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. All are welcome to attend. Flyer enclosed.

SJB PARISH NEWS


Jason Hoefling, part of the medical team from SJB heading to our Sister Parish in Haiti would like to thank everyone for the fabulous donations! All items will travel on Saturday with Jason and his teammates. The Knights of Columbus is hosting a "South of the Border" Mexican Dinner on Friday, February 1st in the Lyon Center. Admission at the door is $10.00 per person. Doors open at 6:45pm. The deadline for submitting information & flyers for the next Tuesday letter will be Monday, 2/4, 10AM.
