Project RoachSat2011
1.0 Mission Overview __________________________________________________________ Team Victorious Secret shall design and build a balloon satellite that shall ascend to an altitude of approximately 30,480 meters, carrying with it instruments and cockroaches so that it may observe and record the effects of a high altitude environment on biological systems, and record the conditions the insects are being subjected to. A successful mission shall collect and store data from the following: two onboard cameras, an Arduino Mega outfitted with two pressure sensors and two humidity sensors, and a HOBO with two temperature sensors and one humidity sensor. We will then be able to link this data to the survival or death of four cockroaches on the satellite. The structure shall remain intact, and devices shall work according to plan. Four cockroaches will be placed into separate boxes, each being observed by a video feed at all times. The combination of the video feed and the atmospheric sensors carried onboard will allow us to determine exactly how the cockroaches react to the conditions they are in, and the conditions of death if such a circumstance arises. The inclusion of four separate cockroaches, each being subjected to different conditions, will allow us to determine which atmospheric variable (i.e. pressure, temperature, or any combination of the two) will be the most damaging. The balloon satellite shall remain intact in a working condition so that it may be retrieved and recovered in a working condition upon landing. Additionally, the balloon satellite shall carry imaging devices with which it shall document its flight. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the necessary precautions to protect living scientific payloads for any future missions to high altitude environments, as well as the precautions necessary to protect any manned missions to such an environment. Similarly, the data obtained by team Victorious Secrets satellite could be used for reference in the event that a permanent high altitude installation, such as a space elevator or similar concept were to ever be put into design regarding the degree of protection that would be required for cargo and other systems onboard the installation. The use of such data would allow for future missions to know the exact degree of protection required for their specific payloads and/or crew, enabling them to ensure the complete safety for their mission, without unnecessarily straining budget, weight, size, and time constraints, as well as any other mission parameters that may be affected by the required amount of shielding. As the interest at both the public and scientific levels in such a space elevator increases, more data is required on the strains that an ascent through every level of the atmosphere would exert upon the cargo of such an installation. Although there have been several incidents of humans being accidentally exposed to vacuum, the effects of such an environment have not been thoroughly tested, and there is no reference for lower life-forms that may be transported on the elevator (1*). The recorded effects of a largely unshielded ascent through the first levels of the atmosphere on living creatures could serve as an experimental control for future, more in depth investigations. It is this teams hypothesis that after reaching an altitude of 12,200 meters the environmental conditions become too severe for survival in unprotected conditions. We believe that at this altitude the cockroach in the cold and unsealed box will die. Additionally, this team believes that the cold will be the single most detrimental condition to the cockroachs survival. At an altitude of 12,200 meters, the air pressure is less than 24.96 kilopascals, (2*) compared to the air pressure at sea level, which is 101.35 kilopascals. To verify this hypothesis, the balloon satellite will monitor the condition of the insects at all times during the flight through the video feed, as

well as a humidity and pressure sensor inside each of the containers to monitor the exact conditions of the cockroaches. Additionally, the satellite will monitor basic atmospheric conditions throughout the flight, such as temperature, air pressure, and altitude. 1*)Mattson, Barbara. "Human Body in a Vacuum." 2.0 Requirements Flow Down____________________________________________________

Level 0 Requirement Detail A RoachSat shall ascend to approximately 30,500 meters by balloon on 5 November 2011. B Weight will be no more than 850g. C RoachSat shall carry four (4) cockroaches to find the harshest conditions for life at high altitudes. D The satellite shall descend safely to the ground so that data can be analyzed. A.1 RoachSat shall be tested for integrity and durability before the launch date. All electronic functions will be tested to ensure functionality during the flight and data retrieval after the flight. B.1 Parts shall be weighed periodically and during the final weigh in on 4 November 2011. This is necessary for permission to fly. C.1 Keeping a control cockroach on the ground in an unsealed container is necessary to rule out natural uncertainties such as sickness. The four cockroaches in the air must be isolated in their own container. C.2 Cockroach 1 will be in the heated section of the cube, in an unsealed plastic container. The temperature, pressure, and humidity inside this container will be measured with the HOBO, as it is exposed to the same conditions as the rest of the interior of the cube. Testing will be done to ensure conditions inside and outside of the unsealed cockroach containers are the same. Data will be stored in a micro SD card attached to the Arduino.

Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011
C.3 Cockroach 2 will be in the heated section of the cube, in a sealed plastic container. Pressure and humidity will be measured with pressure and humidity sensors connected to the Arduino Mega. We will assume that temperature inside the sealed box is the same as the temperature recorded by the HOBO, inside the cube. Testing shall be done to ensure this is true. Cockroach 3 shall be in the unheated, exposed section of the cube in a sealed plastic container. Humidity and pressure shall be measured with humidity and pressure sensors, attached to the Arduino. Temperature will be measured using the external HOBO probe. Testing shall confirm that the temperature inside the sealed container and in the surrounding environment is the same. Data will be stored in a micro SD card attached to the Arduino. Cockroach 4 shall be in the unheated, exposed section of the cube in an unsealed plastic container. Humidity, temperature, and pressure will be measured and recorded by the HOBO probes. The satellite shall be tested to ensure structural integrity for quick accelerations during descent. Electronics shall be tested to continue functioning during this time. Data storage will continue until the cube is recovered. The parachute attached to the flight line will slow descent so that the structure of the cube, cockroach containers, and electronics remain intact through landing. Flight string through Roachsat shall be attached securely so that it may be tracked to landing with the GPS transmitter and receiver at the bottom of the flight string.

Project RoachSat2011

The structure of our balloon satellite is a rectangular prism made of foam core sealed at the joints with aluminum tape and hot glue. There shall be a large and small compartment within the prism, separated by insulating foam core. The dual compartment designs purpose is to allow for testing of our cockroaches in both an exposed environment and a more controlled environment to determine precisely what upper atmospheric factors are most detrimental to life. The larger internal compartment shall contain the lowing: The externalview image camera with onboard SD card 1Heating pad Both video cameras with onboard micro SD card One LED for lighting Two (2) cockroaches in individual containers o One pressure-sealed container o One ventilated container

A pressure and humidity sensor, connected to the Arduino, in the sealed cockroach container An Arduino Mega microcontroller 6-9 Volt alkaline batteries 2-9 Volt lithium batteries 2-AA Lithium batteries 1-HOBO device

The smaller internal compartment with no environmental control will contain the following: Two (2) cockroaches in individual containers o One pressure-sealed container o One ventilated container A pressure and humidity sensor, connected to the Arduino, in the sealed cockroach container The external-view camera serves to capture images every 10 seconds as the balloon satellite rises to its altitude of up to 30,480 meters. One of the internal-view cameras will be focused on the two heated cockroach containers. The other internal-view container will be focused on the unheated two cockroach containers through the insulating wall. To insure video quality, three white LEDs will go with each of the two interior video cameras. The HOBO device will gather and store both internal and external temperature data, and internal humidity. The pressure and humidity sensors inside the pressurized cockroach containers will be used to gather data from the insides of sealed containers. The data collected from the sensors and the HOBO will be time correlated with the video stream to judge how the environmental factors affect the cockroaches. For instance, a sudden drop of pressure in one of the sealed containers would not only prove a failure in the structural integrity of the container, but could help us analyze the change in behavior of the cockroach in a low pressure environment. The heating pad serves to keep the temperature in the larger interior compartment above the freezing point, in order to eliminate the temperature variable as a cause of death for the cockroaches in the temperature. It also serves to keep equipment and devices at a less harsh temperature to help prevent failures. The experiment calls for five cockroach test containers, four for the satellite and one for a control on the ground, in order to separate factors which may cause death of a cockroach. The cockroach containers are clear rectangular prisms made from clear acrylic. Several hours before launch, we will put the roaches into their randomly assigned containers, seal two of the containers on board, and lock the unsealed containers. Once the roaches are situated, we shall begin the final prelaunch procedures. This includes powering up the three on-board cameras, powering on the HOBO device, turning on the heater and the Arduino microcontroller. Throughout the flight and descent, two on-board video cameras will focus on their respective roach container pairs to monitor the cockroaches as condi7 Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011
tions become more life threatening. A concern is condensation build up on the roach containers. In testing, we will determine the magnitude of this potential problem and base a solution accordingly. Upon recovery of the satellite, the team will immediately determine the status of all five cockroaches and record this data. Cockroaches have been known to survive very harsh temperatures, even after apparent death. For this reason we will immediately ventilate all containers then periodically check the status of any cockroaches that appear dead for the following two hours. Once we get to our mission computer, we will download all data and begin to review video footage, looking for any changes in cockroach behavior. The team will note all changes in temperature, pressure, humidity and altitude data. We will not confirm any death until data has totally been reviewed, and the cockroach does not show any signs of life for two hours after recovery. In addition, each team member must sign off on death before it can be accepted as official. Once all footage and data has been reviewed and confirmed, the team will review all data and make an appropriate conclusion on upper atmosphere conditions that threaten life. As required in the RFP, our satellite tests high altitude conditions which are harmful to the life of cockroaches through the use of images, video, and multiple pressure, temperature, and humidity sensors. Testing will determine if our satellite will be able to withstand the flight. Indicators on the HOBO and Arduino will verify systems are working before the flight. The onboard heater along with insulation insures that the internal temperature does not drop below 5 C and our weight budget is always kept under allowable limits. The HOBO device has been integrated into our design and its internal and external temperature data will very valuable in determining cause of death in the experimental cockroaches. The provided Canon Camera is used to capture images of the outside environment throughout the flight. The external structure is made of foam core and is designed to have contact information and the United States Flag visible to the outside. All design units are in metric and our detailed safety procedures insure that no one will get hurt.

4.0 Management_______________________________________________________________ This section is dedicated to the layout of time and resources for team Victorious Secret. 12 Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011
In order to effectively test our experiment, there is a need for special equipment to maintain experimental conditions for living organisms in addition to equipment vital to the satellite functioning. In order to ensure the structural integrity of the BalloonSat, we shall perform various tests simulating the forces that will be inflicted upon the structure during ascent, burst, descent, and touchdown. Tests performed on foam core structure of satellite unless otherwise indicated shall contain added weight to simulate hardware mass. The following are descriptions of the various tests performed in order to prepare the RoachSat for flight. Drop Test: The drop test shall consist of dropping the BalloonSat from a height of 8 meters, from the bridge connecting the DLC and the ITLL buildings. We shall also drop the acrylic cockroach containers alone, to simulate their strength in the case of the foam core structure failing. This testing will ensure that the RoachSat shall withstand the forces of impact when at high velocities on the way down and upon impact with Earth. The RoachSat shall also be pushed down a flight of stairs in order to simulate any rocky terrain that the satellite might experience (example: tumbling, rolling, toppling etc.) during touchdown. The RoachSats structure shall withstand impact simulation in order to confirm structural reliability for launch. Whip Test: The whip test shall consist of spinning the structure of the BalloonSat by a line to simulate large accelerations and abrupt direction changes. The test shall prove the rigidity of the cube structure and flight tube performance if both the structure and the tube if there is no damage to the structure and the flight string remained properly aligned throughout the test. The whip tests shall consist of 1-2 minute time intervals where a teams individual shall perform the rigorous movements with added weight (equivalent to the RoachSats instrument weight). Cold Test: Once all electrical systems are added to the BalloonSat, they shall be put them into a container of dry ice in order to simulate extreme temperature drops at high altitudes during flight. The RoachSat shall be under these conditions for three hours, which is approximately the amount of time that it shall be in flight. During testing all systems shall be running and tested after the duration of three hours to insure functionality after experiencing severe stresses. The HOBO will record temperature as well as relative humidity inside of the satellite, thus testing the effectiveness of the foam core insulation as well as heaters. The test shall prove that the RoachSats hardware will not only withstand the immediate cold temperatures but the prolonged effects of the flight, without diminishing its capability to function. Ground Test: We shall test one cockroach in a sub-freezing environment to test for their comatose stage. With this, we shall be able to better analyze their state while in flight. We shall test to confirm that the temperature inside the cockroach containers is always the same as the temperature in the surrounding environment. We will use the HOBO to confirm this while the container is in a room, then in an ice cooler. We shall test a sealed cockroach container in the vacuum container to ensure structural integrity of the container. We shall test one cockroach in one of the sealed containers for 5 hours to ensure there is enough air to survive for the length of the flight. So long as the container keeps pressure

13

Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011

throughout the flight, this test eliminates lack of air as a cause of death to the sealed cockroaches. Both the humidity sensors, pressure sensors, and micro SD shield were tested for proper functionality and responses in different environments.

Vacuum Testing: Using the vacuum chamber at Space Grant, the pressure sensors were able to be tested for functionality while the sealed cockroach containers were tested for quality and durability. During the first test, the sealed cockroach containers did not hold pressure, as seen by the drop in pressure from ~83,000 Pascal to ~12,000 Pa in the sealed container. The second test proved the functionality of the sealed containers as it maintained a 60,000 Pa difference for five minutes. Camera Image Testing: Just as in the cooler test, all hardware shall be incorporated in the testing process. The live feed cameras will be put in use on the cockroaches during dry ice testing for approximately three hours. The RoachSat will consist of three cameras, all within the satellite, thus having access to the heater which will reduce the amount of condensation build up on the lens. The cameras shall pass the cooler testing to ensure proper wiring and reliability of system integration. Test Results: Drop Test: During the drop test RoachSat maintained adequate structural integrity. The blunt impact of the ground did not harm the weights inside the box structure nor the external construction of the Satellite. The RoachSat shall withstand any forces it may encounter during flight and landing.

Whip Test: The whip test was performed a total of four times. The RoachSat kept its structural integrity as well as forces that it shall experience during flight. The internal weights were not affected by the whip test and proved to withstand forces similar to those expected to be encountered during flight. We conclude that the RoachSat will accurately be able to withstand the forces of gravity beyond burst and during its descent to earth.

14

Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011

Stair Test: The RoachSat retained its structure through the course of all the stair tests and, after further evaluation, kept all components within the box in their designated positions. Nothing exposed during the tests, implying sturdy sealing, which will be further reinforced in the final design before launch. The exterior of the RoachSat obtained visible damage to corners and edges but nothing of significance to affect internal mechanisms. In turn the RoachSat shall withstand any abrupt or rough movement during all the phases of flight and after landing.

Cooler Test: Two cooler tests were preformed to insure the accuracy of the HOBO data logger and to insure that all systems could sustain the duration of the flight in flight conditions. The second test confirmed the accuracy of the HOBO and proved that all flight systems could sustain the duration and conditions. The interior temperature was maintained throughout the test.

Box opened to check test

Start of test

End of cooler test

The high temperatures of the cooler test can be attributed to the proximity of the temperature probe to the balloon satellite, causing the radiant heat from the heaters of the satellite to interfere and raise the temperature in the location at which the probe was reading.

Project RoachSat2011

Heaters turned off and end of test Start of test

17

Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011

The extremely high internal temperatures recorded during the cold test can be attributed to the intensity of the dual heaters and their proximity to the HOBO. The heaters themselves did generate enough heat to damage some of the components of the satellite, therefore extremely high internal temperatures are to be expected during the course of the experiment.

Start of test

18

Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011
Water added to dry ice End of Test

The steady decrease in humidity throughout the test can be attributed to the steady exchange of air between the air in the cooler with the dryer air outside of the cooler.

7.0 Expected Results___________________________________________________________ Team Victorious Secret believes that the cold at high altitudes will be the most detrimental condition to life. We believe that temperatures below zero degrees Celsius will start to freeze the organs of the cockroach, thus killing it. Thus we anticipate both of the cockroaches in the unheated compartment of the satellite will die in the Stratosphere, approximately 11,000 meters above sea level Additionally, we expect that both the cockroaches in the heated section of the satellite will survive the ascent, despite one of them being exposed to the low atmospheric pressure. If such a result is obtained from our satellite, then it will prove that cold is the most detrimental effect on biological organisms, and that stringent protection procedures should be put in place to ensure the safety of any such items put into a high altitude environment.
19 Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011
To test our techniques for data gathering, all data gathering instruments shall be run and data recorded as soon as the necessary components are completed. For instance, once all cameras are properly wired to their power feeds and memory storage, they shall be run and footage recorded and reviewed to ensure quality is high enough to be reviewable and understandable. Similarly, all pressure, humidity and temperature sensors shall be tested in the same manner. All sensors shall be submitted to different conditions to ensure that they properly log the data they record, and that the data fits with the conditions they are being exposed to. Once the entire BalloonSat is constructed and assembled, all video feeds and atmospheric sensors shall be ran during the entirety of the dry ice test to finally ensure their proper function while exposed to conditions harsher than those experienced during normal ground tests. Upon retrieval of the satellite, all recorded video shall be reviewed, as well as the data retrieved from the atmospheric sensors. The data from the video feeds will be reviewed to monitor the conditions of the cockroaches at all times, and if necessary, determine the time of death of the cockroaches. This time of death can then be cross referenced with the data logged from the atmospheric sensors to determine the exact conditions the cockroach was experiencing at that time. Additionally, any irregularities recorded by these sensors can be used as a back-up to the video feeds in the determination of the time of death. For example, a spike in the humidity in one of the containers could be attributed to the death of the cockroach if supported by the data being retrieved from the video feed at that time. The times of death of the cockroaches will then be used to isolate which condition is the most detrimental to the cockroaches, as each of the cockroaches is exposed to an individual and closely monitored variable.

8.0 Launch and Recovery

Provide a plan for the upcoming launch and recovery (who is launching the BalloonSat, who is responsible for recovering it, what will happen after recovery, etc). Include your data retrieval plan for after recovery and indicate or prove that it this plan has been tested and it works. (Rev C) Provide an account of the Launch and Recovery. Include condition of payload at landing site and during data retrieval. (Rev D)

Upon arriving at the launch site, the team will begin going through the pre-launch check list to insure that all systems are properly running. This includes the both video cameras, LED lights, still image camera, Arduino and heaters. The hobo will start running through an automatic timer at 4:00 am and run for approximately eight hours. The launch will begin upon final approval from Professor Koehler. Jake Broadway is in charge of holding the balloon flight string and running with RoachSat during release of the balloon. The navigation team will track the flight string throughout flight and upon landing Team Victorious Secret
20 Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011
will recover RoachSat. After immediate retrieval of RoachSat and the flight string recovery will continue with photo documentation before RoachSat is touched; this will aid in judging the effects of landing conditions upon the cockroaches and the satellite. Once carefully removed from the flight string, the satellite shall be opened, systems shall be turned off, and cockroaches shall be accounted for. All cockroaches, regardless of condition upon recovery, shall be kept in their respective containers and closely observed for at least five hours after recovery to accurately determine their actual status. The sealed containers shall have holes drilled into them to allow fresh air to the cockroaches to avoid unnecessary risk of suffocation after completion of the experiment. The team shall collect data from the HOBO, both video cameras, and pressure, temperature, and humidity sensors in the Arduino. The day after launch, the team shall gather to watch flight footage to determine when the roaches appear to die. These critical points will be made note of and conditions at these times from the HOBO and Arduino sensors will be recorded to determine the cause of death. This process will accomplish the mission of determining upper atmospheric conditions most detrimental to life.

This is a sample of data retrieved from the Arduino during testing, proving data recovery.

9.0 Results, Analysis, and Conclusions

Heres the big section. After your recovery, analyze your data. Provide samples of your data and describe what the data tells you. Provide plots and graphs if it is appropriate. Include best pictures taken by your camera. Be sure to include a thorough analysis of that data here and make your conclusions. Be sure to label all plots and graphs, including events or key points during the test. You should compare 21 Team Victorious Secret

Project RoachSat2011
your results with expected or predicted results. You should address if your data proves what you planned to discover and if not why. You should discuss if you answered your WHY and WHAT of your mission. Electronic copies of the data (raw and analyzed), including the 20 best images taken by your camera, shall be submitted on disc with this Rev D of this report. If something on your payload did not work, please indicate this in a separate Failure Analysis section of Section 9.0. (Rev D)

10.0 Ready for Flight

Discuss how your team verified they were corrected and will not occur on the next flight. Discuss what you did to make your BalloonSat ready to fly again. Discuss how the payload should be stored until a second flight. Discuss how to activate your payload. Discuss what might not last if payload is not launched within 6 months. Other items you feel should be mentioned. (Rev D)

11.0 Conclusions and Lessons Learned

The most important thing that we learned is the importance of testing, and to not assume that any piece of the project is going to work. You must know that it is going to work, and can prove it through testing before launch. Also, We learned that a large and relatively complicated project such as this requires lots of teamwork and cooperation. Although Team Victorious Secret did not particularly suffer from any teamwork issues, we did have some minor bumps in the road that had to be worked through. We were able to work through these issues without any obvious negative impact on the final product. During construction of the balloon satellite, we learned the importance of extreme care with regard to assembly. While applying epoxy to seal two of the cockroach containers, enabling them to hold pressure, some of the epoxy dripped onto the SD shield and locked the reset button. During pre-flight runs of the Arduino, an error would occur that would cause the data to not be written to the SD card. This could be easily fixed by pressing the reset button on the SD shield, but the dripped epoxy prevented this easy fix on launch. If we were to build the satellite again, during the final sealing of the containers the rest of the satellite should be covered in paper towels or a similar measure should be taken to ensure that none of the epoxy manages to damage any other part of the project. Also, we should have tested the individual components of the satellite more thoroughly than what was done. Before the flight, we found that that the internal cameras stopped recording after roughly 35 minutes after they are turned on. We never tried to determine the reason for this, and had thorough testing on the cameras been done perhaps a fix could have been found before flight, or better cameras purchased. In general, time is the greatest enemy, and if problems can be identified early on, then you have a better chance of fixing it in time. Be thorough, careful, and stay ahead of schedule as best you can.

I promise you, this class is harder than you think it is. Be prepared for all-nighters, because youll probably pull at least one. You will work a ridiculous amount of hours in preparation for the flight, but as soon as that balloon takes off, it will suddenly all be worth it. Also, TEST EVERYTHING. If you dont think something needs to be tested, test it anyways. Teamwork is the most important thing to a successful satellite. If you dont get along with someone on your team, suck it up and put the team on your back. For Madden.
