Most other books on water quality and pollution control are highly technical and very specific, and are aimed at engineers, scientists, or attorneys. Clean Water, on the other hand, is a comprehensive discussion of the subject intended for a wider audience of science students, educators, and the general public. Clean Water summarizes the basic fundamentals of water chemistry and microbiology and outlines important water quality rules and regulations, all in concise, understandable prose. It describes the basic scientific principles behind water pollution control and the broader approach of addressing water pollution problems through watershed management. There are sections on drinking water and on citizen involvement in water pollution control efforts at home and in the community. This is a thoroughly revised edition of Vigil's 1996 book, Clean Water: The Citizen's Complete Guide to Water Quality and Water Pollution Control, which was praised by reviewers and has been used as a textbook at colleges and high schools throughout the U.S. Book News Annotation: This guide for students, water professionals, and concerned citizens provides an introduction to water quality and water pollution control. Environmental engineer Vigil describes the basic scientific principles behind water pollution control and explains the broader approach of watershed management. He also suggests ways for citizens to apply what they have learned about clean water at home and in the community. The first edition was published by Columbia Cascade Publishing in 1996 under the title . Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Handbook of Groundwater Remediation Using Permeable Reactive Barriers: Applications to Radionuclides, Trace Metals, and Nutrients
by David Naftz ISBN: 0125135637 Available at : Tehnical Synopses & Reviews Publisher Comments: Over the last century and a half, ground waters have become contaminated by a growing number of organic and inorganic substances ranging from petroleum-derived hydrocarbons to radioactive compounds, to cancer-causing hexavalent chromium. The importance of uncontaminated groundwater for agriculture, human consumption, and the environmental health of ecosystems is paramount to the health and productivity of industrial society. Water scientists and managers are focused on developing costeffective methods to reverse this trend.
Several methodologies have been developed, however few are as cost-effective as the use of readily available materials, such as iron and organic compost, for absorbing and isolating contaminants within the matrix of a permeable barrier. The Handbook of Groundwater Remediation using Permeable Reactive Barriers presents readers with this latest technology and developments within four main sections: 1. Innovations in Design, Construction, and Evaluation of PRBs 2. Development of Reactive Materials 3. Evaluations of Chemical and Biological Processes 4. Case Studies of Permeable Reactive Barrier Installations The Handbook is one of the first references specifically on this topic. It is an excellent fit for graduate students entering this emerging field as well as professionals conducting research or implementing this technology. Book News Annotation: Permeable reactive barriers (PRB) are emerging as a passive, low-cost approach to cleaning up contaminated groundwater. This collection of 17 papers provides current information on the reactive materials, design alternatives, flow systems, and evaluation methods being developed to make permeable reactive barriers a viable technology. Many of the papers share the results of existing field installations of PRBs for removing metals, radionuclides, and nutrients. Topics include the performance of limestone drains, mixtures of pelletized bone charcoal and hermatite pellets, and the chemical and biological processes that occur in PRBs. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Synopsis: Uncontaminated groundwater is needed for agriculture, human consumption, and properly functioning ecosystems. Scientists and engineers are now focused on undoing the damaging effects of decades of contamination by substances such as petroleumderived pesticides and radioactive compounds. The innovative and cost-effective application of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) has only occurred during the last five years. This technique involves using readily available minerals, such as clays and zeolites, to absorb and isolate contaminants within the matrix of a permeable barrier. This handbook, the first reference specifically on this topic, is an excellent fit for graduate students and researchers entering this emerging field. Numerous case studies provide the reader with current applications, innovations, and methods for using PRBs in the removal of inorganic contaminants from groundwater. In addition, each chapter contains a section discussing areas for additional research.

In Last Oasis, author Sandra Postel explains that decades of profligacy and mismanagement of the world's water resources have produced signs of shortages and environmental destruction. She writes with authority and clarity of the limits ecological, economic, and politicalof this vital natural resource. She explores the potential for conflict over water between nations, and between urban and rural residents. And she offers a sensible way out of such struggles. Last Oasis makes clear that the technologies and know-how exist to increase the productivity of very liter of water. But citizens must first understand the issues and insist on policies, laws, and institutions that promote the sustainable use of water.
