Innovations in Marine Education A Residential Workshop (part of the Field Studies Council 70th anniversary celebrations) 15th 17th

h March 2013 Field Studies Council Dale Fort Field Centre, Pembrokeshire In conjunction with the British Ecological Society and the London Science Learning Centre As a maritime nation, the United Kingdom has a strong tradition of marine biological research and many of our top marine scientists will have first been inspired by their school field trips to the seashore. Field Centres run by the Field Studies Council and other environmental education providers have been delivering seashore-based fieldwork for decades benefitting many thousands of students. School teachers have also independently run field trips to the coast for many years. Pupils from KS1 to A level have been learning about their marine environment and coastal heritage through experiential rock pool safaris to detailed scientific studies on a range of organisms from seaweeds to crabs and limpets. At the same time, Higher Education Institutions have also been using Field Centres as bases to run their own undergraduate and postgraduate field excursions. Dale Fort Field Centre, is one of 17 Field Centres run by the Field Studies Council. It first opened its doors in 1949 becoming the UKs, and probably the worlds, first Marine-based Field Centre. As part of the FSCs 70th anniversary celebrations, Dale Fort are keen to take the opportunity to review where marine environmental education has reached and to explore some of the innovations in teaching on the seashore that have been developed in recent years. This weekend residential workshop aims to give the opportunity for schools teachers, lecturers and environmental education providers to share current teaching approaches and methodology and explore innovative new ways to interpret the marine environment in the 21st Century. The weekend will consist of presentations and posters, field trips to local shores and facilitated workshops, to share and disseminate good practice and look at ways to develop exciting new teaching resources for KS2 through to HE. Cost: Non-residential fee = Free (Lunch 3, Dinner 5) A limited number of Bursaries are also from the BES to cover fees and travel for University staff, undergraduates and postgraduates and for workshop deliverers.
