A Message from the preSIDent Johnny Weiger - Fall Sports - Academic Success
Dear Montini Catholic Alumni and Friends, This first semester of the 2012-13 school year has been very exciting and successful, but it has also been a semester filled with sadness and deep emotion for our school community, as we dealt with the death of an excellent student and sophomore football player, Johnny Weiger. We found out very early in the semester that Johnnys recovery from bone marrow surgery had taken a turn for the worse. Johnnys battle against leukemia, and his courage and deep faith in God, touched us all and was an inspiration to his teammates, our student body, members of our athletic conference, and many within and outside the Montini Catholic community. Johnny lost his battle with leukemia on November 4, 2012, but his spirit was and still is with us. I ask you to please keep the Weiger family in your thoughts and prayers during Christmas and throughout the New Year. We entered the 2012-13 school year excited that 24 perfect scores of 5 were recorded by Montini Catholic students on the 2012 Advanced Placement examination and 70% of the students who took these exams recorded a score of 3 or better, earning them college credit at most universities and colleges in the country. As many of you are aware, Montini Catholic once again experienced a great deal of athletic success during the fall season. Girls Volleyball captured the freshmen, sophomore and varsity championships in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division. Girls Cross Country captured the Suburban Christian Conference Varsity Championship for the third straight year and was the third place trophy winner in the IHSA State 2A Cross Country Championships in Peoria. Varsity Football recorded a 4-Peat in Class 5A football, capturing the state championship once again, with a 19 to 6 victory over Morris High School. Very few high schools in the state can make this claim and it is an accomplishment of which our school community is very proud. Since 2000, Montini Catholic has claimed 18 IHSA State Championships: 10 in Wrestling, 5 in Football and 3 in Girls Basketball. This is a very proud accomplishment for our school community. The success that our athletic program has attained in recent years has brought on a false perception with some of our alumni and friends that we are solely focused on athletic success. Nothing could be further from the truth. We do well in the area of athletics because we have talented, hardworking students guided by excellent coaches on the field or court, and guided by excellent LaSallian teachers in the classroom. What people dont read and see in the newspapers is the academic success that these student athletes achieve in the classroom every day. Not only are the Advanced Placement Scores outstanding as indicated earlier in my letter, but our students ACT scores continue to exceed the state and national averages, and our 163 graduates of the Class of 2012 received $10 million in academic scholarships. 72% of our faculty and staff have earned masters or doctoral degrees. Each year our graduates are accepted and are attending the top universities in the country. Year in and year out many students who participate in our 23 athletic programs, rank in the top of their classes and are leaders in our academic and spiritual programs. Over the years, many of our talented student/ athletes have also attended some of the top academic universities in the country, many strictly on academic scholarships. These academic accomplishments are not covered by the media, so I have provided a snapshot of just some of the successes of our young men and women student athletes in the shaded box at the bottom of the page. I also invite you to visit our website at www.montini. org to read more about our academic success stories. On the home page, you will see a listing of our weekly news and press releases that highlight many of our students accomplishments in academics. In a nut shell, the success we have experienced academically not only meets, but exceeds the success that we have achieved athletically. Finally, let me wish each and everyone of you and your loved ones a blessed and healthy New Year. As always, I thank you for your continual support and generosity to our school community. Live Jesus In Our HeartsForever Sincerely, Jim Segredo President

Friday, august 9, 2013

n Friday, September 7, 2012 Montini Catholic High School hosted a reunion for its 19-time State Championship Dance Program, The Broncettes. 53 alumnae performed a routine, choreographed by former Broncettes Tina (Riccio) Wurtz 00 and Dena (Morano) McGady 01, titled Memories. Current Head Coach, Eugenia (Wasson) Scavone 84, who is in her 21st year as Head Coach, was also

among the alumnae who performed in front of a varsity football halftime crowd that evening. The performance brought alumnae from 1976 2012, making it the largest such reunion in school history. After the game, a reception was held in the schools cafeteria. More than 100 former Broncettes met to share memories old and new. The reunion, which was coordinated by Megan (Crotty) Pauley 00 was a big success for the schools Alumni outreach. Winter 2012 3

Throughout the day, the sophomore students participated in service projects such as packing food for starving children in poor countries, packing lunches for homeless people, yard work and assisting the elderly. The sophomore class returned from their Service Day for a prayer service on Montini Catholics campus, spending time in reflection on what they can do to help the community and those who are less fortunate. This is the seventh year that the Sophomore Day of Service and Recollection has been service-oriented. On Monday, November 5th, the Sixteenth Annual Montini Catholic High School Golden Gobbler Thanksgiving Food Drive kicked-off. Over the last fifteen years, students of Montini Catholic have collected over 275,000 food items for the less fortunate throughout DuPage County. The Montini Catholic Student Government encouraged the entire school community to participate in the food drive. School spirit is also encouraged through a homeroom competition in which each homeroom class competes to bring in the most items. It is all done in a spirit of fun with the well being of those in need as the main focus. Food is collected each school day during the two week time period and distributed to area food pantries. Some of the food is earmarked for families who Montini Catholic then sponsors during their participation in the AdoptA-Family Program during the Christmas Season. In addition to the food drive, this years Golden Gobbler featured a coat drive with donations going to Our Lady of the Angels on the west-side of Chicago. Winter 2012 5

Alumni in the Sciences Meet for Inaugural STEM Council Session

t. John Baptist de la Salle was an innovative educator, working tirelessly to provide a quality education to the poor young men of France so they would be good Christian men and good citizens prepared for employment in the future. As Montini Catholic continues this mission of education, we recognize that offering a solid, well-rounded college preparatory experience is critical, and that our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs must continue to evolve with the times. To this end, with the support of two Montini Catholic Board Members, Dr. Janis Orlowski 74 (pictured above) and Mr. Ed Mack (alumni parent), we invited any and all alumni who might work in these fields to attend an inaugural advisory council meeting on October 26, 2012. The alumni in attendance provided a great deal of thoughtful insight into their own journey towards careers in these fields, suggested extracurricular avenues of exploration, and agreed to continue the discussion of how Montini alumni can help to support the current administration, faculty, and students in these areas. The brainstorming session floated Skype calls with medical professionals, mentors for robotics or other science clubs, and job shadowing programs, to name just a few. Everyone was excited to keep the momentum going and, as such, we will be holding a second meeting on January 25, 2013 at 8:30 am in De LaSalle Hall. If you are interested in participating, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Jim Segredo, jsegredo@ montini.org, 630-627-6930 (ext 174) or Janet Cobb, jcobb@ montini.org, 630-627-6930 (ext 187) to learn more.

But, in 2012 we saw Montini football solidify its claim to a dynasty. The Montini Catholic football program became just one of 4 other IHSA football programs to win 4 consecutive state championships. Over Thanksgiving weekend, the Montini Broncos defeated the Morris Community High School Redskins 19-6 in the class 5A IHSA State Finals. Gifting to Montini
Over the years I have been associated with Montini Catholic High School, I have been humbled & gratified by the support in excellence made by our past-parents, our alums, our own present parents of students, and the surrounding corporate community. We could not have accomplished and completed so many of the renovations, the new additions, and provided the support for tuition/financial aid as we have had without the generous support of so many!! Thank you!! DID YOU KNOW that gifts, such as securities, held for twelve (12) months or longer, can be an advantageous way to convey your gift to Montini Catholic HS at year-end? Donors of appreciated stock receive a charitable gift deduction on the FULL present-value while avoiding altogether the capital gains tax on the appreciation of the stock/s. WIN-WIN!! For more information about making such a current gift, or remembering Montini Catholic High School in your own estate planning, please call Brother Thomas Harding, fsc at 630627-6930 x179, or e-mail Brother Thomas at: tharding@montini.org Once again, THANK YOU!
