All priests must be at their parish assignments during Lent, so I was able to get away for a few days before Lent begins this Wednesday, February 13th (doesnt it seem like we just took down the Christmas decorations?). Mass on Ash Wednesday will be at 9am and 7pm. Even though this is not a holy day of obligation, most Catholics like to begin this holy season of repentance & conversion by receiving ashes on their forehead during one of these Masses. You will notice that during Lent, as instructed by the Roman Missal, the use of flowers is restrained and only music that supports the singing of the congregation is to be used. We tend to fast from decorations and lively music in order to better prepare for the great feast of Easter. We also abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday & all Fridays of Lent, and we fast (eat less) on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday. We have the guidelines for this printed in todays bulletin. Our Fish Fry will begin next Friday, February 22nd. Though priests need to be at their assignments during Lent, deacons do not! So our beloved Deacon Pete & his wife Patricia are going to be leaving for a cruise this Monday & will be gone for 10 days. They both deserve a well earned vacation so we pray they may relax, take in the sun (if it still exists) & return to us refreshed & rejuvenated. Ill be speaking to you this weekend about the Catholic Charities Appeal & well have a short video to watch at the Bishops request (OK its not really a request but an order). But I also want to give you a very short anonymous survey to fill out that will help us better serve your needs during this Year of Faith. And based on a Parish Council discussion we had, Ill also be asking your opinion regarding the Mass time for Saturday. Would you prefer an earlier Mass (like 4:00 or 4:30) for the sake of traveling when its lighter outside? Or does our present 5:00pm Mass suit you just fine? We would only consider making a change if a majority of people would be in favor of that. Please think about that if youre reading this before Mass.

The first reflection will be presented at W.S. United Methodist Church on Sunday Feb. 17, at 6:30 PM. An Opportunity for Forgiveness & Love Have you ever noticed how many times Simon Peter fails? Todays gospel passage from Saint Luke is just one example. Simon Peter and his fellow fishermen were washing their nets, having caught nothing all night. Jesus gets into Simon Peters boat and tells him, Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch. Reluctantly, Simon Peter follows the Lords command and has the most incredible catch of his life. Peter falls to his knees and says, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Its true Peter is a sinful man. Do you remember the scene where Jesus first predicts his own passion to Peter, informing him that he must suffer greatly, be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes and rise after three days? Peters response to Jesus was to rebuke him. But it was Jesus who rebuked Peter by saying, Get behind me Satan! Peter is a sinful man. Or how about the time when Jesus walked on water and called Peter out to join him? Peter started to walk on the water, but then was distracted by the wind and began to sink. Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him and said, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? Peter is a sinful man. And what about Peters act of cowardice, fear and denial during Jesus Passion? When Jesus needed Peter most, Peter denied that he even knew him. Peter is a sinful man. The beauty of Christianity is that we know what Jesus can do with sinful people who want to change he turns sinners into saints. And in Peters case, Jesus forgives him and makes him the first pope of the Church. Thats right, the same sinful man who didnt trust Jesus, who tried to rebuke Jesus, who took his eyes of Jesus, and who denied even knowing Jesus is that same man whose bones are literally the foundation of the most recognizable basilica in the world. Heres the truth: we are all Peter. Were all broken. Weve all failed. Every one of us has sinned. But Peters witness shows us that Jesus can turn terrible sinners into great saints. Why not follow Peters example and experience the Lords forgiveness and absolution in the diocesan wide celebration of the Sacrament of Penance on February 20, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.? The light will be on for you.

All ladies are welcome. Treat yourself to a night out with the girls! A message from the Bishop The revised rules proposed today by the Obama Administration regarding the Department Of Health and Human Services mandate seem encouraging. The Bishops of the United States have strongly objected that mandatory financial support be required of health care providers for abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraceptive services. The Bishops objected to the mandate because of its infringement upon the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Constitution relative to the free exercise of religion. While it appears there is insularity for Catholic institutions, the Bishops will closely study this rule revision. The new regulations also eliminate the criteria regarding the definition of what constitutes a religious institution. After review, it is my hope that these changes will allow the Church to withdraw its strong objections to the HHS mandate so that the Church may continue to carry out its numerous good works. I am gratified by the strong support of Catholics throughout the Diocese of Cleveland, and our country, for their prayers, Masses, protests and other signs of unity objecting to what the government proposed as health care regulations which could have adversely affected the mission of the Catholic Church. Info you need to know and share with others Our observance of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 13 February 2013, a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have reached their 14th year. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. Fridays in Lent are obligatory days of complete abstinence (from meat) for all who have completed their 14th year. Please pick up a copy of The Word Among Us for Lent!
