Friend HappyNewYear!Imincrediblyexcitedtostartmysecondtermandtoworkinthisnewyearwithso manyofyoutoimproveDistrict3andSanFrancisco,andwashonoredtobereelectedbymy colleaguestocontinueservingasPresidentofourBoardofSupervisors.Ivealreadyheardfrommany neighborhoodleadersaboutprioritiesfortheyearthatweshare,fromimprovingoureconomyand ensuringappropriatedevelopmentstoreducingtenantevictionsandfindingcreativewaystoaddress neighborhoodqualityoflifeissues.Ilookforwardtohearingmoreofyourideasandtoworkingtogether intheyearsahead. Ialsowantedtotakethisopportunitytospreadthewordthatmyofficeisonceagainofferinginternship andvolunteeropportunities,whichyoucanfindoutmoreabouthere.Withsuchasmallstaffandso muchworktodo,wedependonthecontributionofstudentinternsandneighborhoodvolunteersalike. CommunityMeetingwithUpdateonPagodaOptionforCentralSubwayConstruction OnTuesday,January22,at6:30p.m.attheTelHiNeighborhoodCenterat660LombardStreet,Iwill hostacommunitymeetingtoprovideanupdateonthestatusoftheproposaltoextracttheCentral SubwaysTunnelBoringMachines(TBMs)atthesiteofthePagodaTheaterinsteadofinthemiddleof ColumbusAvenue,whichwouldbeextremelydisruptive.TheSanFranciscoMunicipalTransportation Agency(SFMTA)isinactivenegotiationswiththeownerofthesite,andmyofficerecentlyintroduced legislationrelatedtotheprocess.Whiletherearestillchallengestomakingthisalternativeareality,I amcautiouslyoptimisticthatwecangetawinwinbyrelocatingtheconstructionandremovinga neighborhoodeyesoreatthesametime.Ifyoudlikemoreinformation,pleasecontactmyaideJudson atjudson.true@sfgov.org.Also,ifyoudliketofollowingtheNorthBeachissueorotherCentralSubway newsmoreclosely,youcansignupfortheSFMTAsemailupdateshere.

JoinUsattheFirstParticipatoryBudgetingCommunitySession Ihopetoseemanyofyouatthefirstparticipatorybudgetingcommunitysession,whichwillbeon Saturday,January26from10:00a.m.to12:30p.m.attheTelHiNeighborhoodCenterat660Lombard Street.ThisinitialsessionispartoftheparticipatorybudgetingpilotprogramthatIlaunchedinDistrict3 togiveresidentsthepowertovotedirectlyonhowtousediscretionaryfundingfromthisyearsbudget. Theobjectiveofthesessionistoidentifypotentialprojectideasthatareaprioritytoourresidentsand providepublicbenefitstoourdistrict.Projectideasmustbeforonetime,nonoperationalexpenditures thatareimplementablebycitydepartmentsandcostnomorethan$20,000. Weencourageallofourdistrictresidentsandleaderstogetinvolvedinthisprocessandhelpusmake thebestinvestmentsinourneighborhoods.Pleaseletusknowifyouwillbeattendingthesessionand ifyouwillbeneedingchildcareassistancebycontactingAmyChanatamy.chan@sfgov.org. BroadwayCBD AgroupofbusinessownersandresidentsintheBroadwaycorridorhavebeenworkingwithmyoffice onaproposaltoformaBroadwayCommunityBenefitDistrict(CBD).TheCBD,whichwouldhavetobe approvedbyamajorityofaffectedpropertyownerswithinitsboundaries,wouldcreateaspecial assessmentdistricttofundadditionalservicesforBroadway,includingmoresecurity,beautification, andmarketing/rebranding.OnJanuary30from56:30atMonroe(473Broadway),therewillbea communitymeetingtodiscusstheproposedCBD.Wehopetoseeyoutheretoshareyourvisionfora saferandimprovedBroadwaycorridor.

JeffersonStreetConstructionasPier43PromenadeisCompleted Earlierthismonth,constructionbeganontheJeffersonStreetImprovementProject.Twoblocksof JeffersonStreet,fromJonestoHydestreets,aregettingstreetscapeimprovementstoenhancethis historicFishermansWharfcorridor.Thefocusistomaketheimportanttouristdestinationandbusiness districtsaferforpedestrians,withnewlydesignedintersections,betterstreetlightingandupgraded crosswalks.Theprojectalsoincludesnewbicyclelanesandlandscaping.Workisplannedtocontinue throughJune.Forregularconstructionupdates,visitthiswebsite. TheJeffersonStreetworkbeginsrightafterthecompletionofanotherimportantFishermansWharf project,thePier43Promenade,whichIcelebratedwithMayorLee,Cityofficialsandwaterfrontfolksin December.Withprojectfundingcomingmostlyfromthe2008parksbond,thepromenadeandseawall dramaticallyimprovesthepedestrianexperienceattheWharfwhilealsoprotectingthismuchvisited sectionofshoreline.

Asthenewyearbegins,IwillmovelegislativelyanumberofordinancesthatIintroducedlastyearand willalsoadvancenewlegislation.Ifyouhavelegislativeideas,orhavequestionsaboutongoing legislation,pleasecontactmyaideJudsonatjudson.true@sfgov.org.Hereareafewupdates: LaunchofHealthyNailSalonProgram OnJanuary12,Iwasveryproudtoparticipateinaneventrecognizingthefirsttennailsalonstaking partinSanFranciscosHealthyNailSalonProgram,aprogramstemmingfromfirstinthenation legislationIauthoredtwoyearsago.Salontechniciansareprimarilyyoung,immigrantwomenwho haveenduredprolongedexposuretotoxicchemicalscommonlyfoundinpolishesandotherproducts. TheDepartmentoftheEnvironmentrunsSanFranciscosvoluntaryprogram,whichsupportssalonsby offeringinformationabouthealthierproducts,trainingsinsafersalonpractices,andpromotion.I encourageyoutogiveyourbusinesstosalonsthataretakingactiontoprotectthehealthoftheirstaff, patrons,andtheenvironment.AlistofparticipatingsalonscanbefoundontheProgramswebsite. GrossReceiptsTaxInformationalWebsiteforBusinesses LastNovember,votersoverwhelminglyapprovedacrucialreformtoourCitysbusinesstaxsystema changeIfirststartedworkingonasaSmallBusinessCommissionerpriortomyelectionasSupervisor. Overthenextfewyears,wewillshiftfromabusinesstaxbasedentirelyonpayrollwhichdiscourages hiringtoonethatfocusesonthegrossreceiptsofourbusinessesthisreformwillcreatethousandsof jobs.Tohelpbusinessesimplementthischange,TreasurerJoseCisneroshascreatedahelpful websitethatincludesfrequentlyaskedquestionsandthetextofthelegislation.
