UpdateonCentralSubwayConstructioninNorthBeach AsNorthBeachmerchantsandresidentsknow,weveallbeenfrustratedbythefactthatdespiteno outreachbeforethisMay,theSanFranciscoMunicipalTransportationAgency(SFMTA)isgearingupto beginCentralSubwayrelatedconstructionactivitiesintheneighborhood.WhiletheSFMTAdelayed thestartdatebytwomonths,myofficewasjustinformedthatutilityrelocationworkissettobeginon August13.ThatworkwilltakeuponelaneoftrafficontheWashingtonSquaresideofColumbus betweenUnion&Filbertfor34months.Atmyrequest,theSFMTAhascommittedtoexaminingoptions thatwouldavoidmoreextensiveworkslatedtobegininJanuary2013fortenmonths,andourOfficeof EconomicandWorkforceDevelopmenthasalsobeenengagedtoassistourmerchants.WhileI continuetosupporttheCentralSubway,Iremaindedicatedtoworkingwithbusinessesandneighbors tominimizethisdisruption.Pleasecontactmyaideatjudson.true@sfgov.orgformoreinformation. NorthBeachLibraryOneStepClosertoGroundbreaking Lastweek,wereceivedgoodnewsaboutthemuchanticipatedNorthBeachLibrary.SuperiorCourt JudgeTerriL.JacksonruledintheCity'sfavorinalawsuitthatwouldhavepreventedtheconstruction ofthiscrucialimprovementforourfamilies.AgroundbreakingcouldtakeplaceasearlyasSeptember. SmallBusinessesandtheAmericanswithDisabilitiesAct(ADA) Inrecentyears,hundredsofSanFranciscosmallbusinesseshavebeenthetargetsoflawsuitsunder theADA.Aftermonthsofresearchandmeetingswithstakeholders,Icraftedanordinancetorequire cityagenciestospeedupthepermitprocessesforsmallbusinessesneedingtocomeintocompliance withtheADAlaw,requirecommerciallandlordstoaddresscommonareaimprovementsforpublic restroomsandgroundfloorentrancesandexits,andmaketenantssigningorrenewingaleaseaware ofpotentialADAissues.OurlegislationtohelpbringsmallbusinessesintocompliancewiththeADA withoutexpensivelawsuitsreceivedinitialapprovalinthelastmeetingbeforethelegislativerecess. PlanningCodeAmendmentstoSupportSmallBusinessandBicycling AlsoattheJuly31Boardmeeting,weapprovedtwodifferentordinancesIsponsoredthatwillamend thePlanningCode.Thefirstchangewillimprovetheeconomicvitalityofourneighborhoodsby providingflexibilitytosmallcommercialestablishmentsthesecondwillencouragethecreationof bicycleparkinginnewconstruction. MovingtoElectroniconlyFilingofCampaignFinanceReports BasedontherecommendationoftheEthicsCommissionandanewStatelaw,Iintroducedameasure toincreasetransparencyofcampaignfinancesbyeliminatingtheneedtofilepapercopiesofcampaign financereports.
