Tyler targets achievement gap

Elementary school rolls out 3-tier plan to help students
By Jerry LaVaute
Special Writer

In the wake of the state of Michigan having declared it a Focus School, administrators and teachers at Tyler Elementary School decided to respond to the states challenge to reduce the aca-

demic achievement gap between the top and the bottom 30 percent of its students. Until last year, Tyler was the home of the Van Buren School Districts Gifted and Talented program, which brought highachieving students to Tyler, but might have produced a gap between its highest academic performers, and those students who would benefit from added attention. Tyler was the only school in the district identified as a Focus School. Currently, Savage

Van Buren Township police are investigating a Jan. 30 hit-and-run accident that left a man lying in the roadway after his bicycle was struck. Lt. Ken Floro said the victim, a 28-yearold township man, did not suffer any life-threatening injuries and is currently recovering. An ongoing investigation into the hit and run has revealed a possible suspect vehicle, which police describe as a 2002-2005 Pontiac Grand Am. The car is dark colored, possibly dark blue, according to a Tuesday news release on the case. It should have some front-end damage and possibly some damage to the windshield. Township police and firefighters, along

with Huron Valley Ambulance, responded at about 7:45 a.m. Jan. 30 to a report of a man lying on Ecorse Road near Jeremy Street. Police say they discovered the man had been riding his bicycle on the shoulder of Ecorse when he was struck by a vehicle. Passing motorists discovered the injured man and called for police. Anyone with further information regarding the case is asked to contact the Detective Marc Abdilla at 734-699-8922.
