How many television and ra- dio stations do we have uch is wasted in awareness cam- paigns of the government. People get information about what their gov- ernment is doing from billboards and streamers scattered all over. Aside from bannered information, advertisements on television, radio and newspapers are also resorted to. We are bombarded on a daily basis of the many things that government does but we seldom feel anything that government is doing. Many programs and projects are advertised with the huge im- ages of the politicians prominently dis- played more than the important details about the program or project. The law that requires the placement of billboards on every project is intended to inform about the cost and nature of the project so that the people can oversee its implementation. It is supposed to banner the cost, specifications and the timeframe for its completion. Unfortu- nately, the information is trivialized for they are buried in small letters under the bold names and shameless faces of the government officials who claim the project as their own. These government officials had developed the temerity to claim credit on the project as if it is be- ing implemented using their money. The billboard of their shameless faces cost much out of the dilapidated funds that are mere remnants of percentage cutters. Jesus answered them, Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bride- groom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. WHY YOU DO NOT FAST? The followers of John the Baptist, like many other people, fasted frequently in order to follow the requirements of the Law and also to use it as a technique in spiritual growth. Until very recent times, fasting was a common penitential activity of the Church. It was an effective penance and a means of purifcation of the soul. Even though it is dif- fcult to do it under the conditions of modern life, it is still a spiritually helpful practice. If the demands of the work we do are so great that we would not be able to fast and do our work right, then we should try to fast at least some times, so that we cam make a sacrifce for God and that we may experience deeper union with Him. Have we neglected the spiritual blessing? Are we afraid to try? (The Daily Gospel Now by Robert E. Sullivan, O.M.I. Published by Paulines. Malot, who is a highly-regarded busi- nesswoman, is running for mayor of Baybay City on a platform for change. Baybay, one of the newly-created cities in Malot... from page 1 the country but is slowly emerging economically, has been in control by a single political family for decades now. But Malot, riding on popular public support, is determined to change the leadership in Baybay. The mayoralty candi- date said that with her at the City Hall, the people of Baybay could expect radical changes not only in the aspect of leadership but even providing basic services to the people of the city. Malot said that she would also anchor her administration on trans- parency and good gover- nance, two qualities, she claimed, that are lacking under the present admin- istration of the city. Her visits to the vari- ous barangays of Bay- bay have been attended by big crowds, an in- dication that they want change in leadership. Meantime, during the UNA rally, Galen- zoga was able to hob- nob with the partys so-called three kings, namely, Vice President Jejomar Binay; Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and former Presi- dent Joseph Estrada, himself a mayoralty candidate for Manila. Galenzoga also met with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Gwen Garcia, who is running for a congressional seat under the UNA ticket.
