like Brian Lewis to work with our board and staff to lead ISTE into the future. Lewis joins ISTE following a 25-year career in both the public and private sectors. He has served as an association leader for several nonprofit organizations, most recently as the chief strategy officer and interim CEO for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), where he managed a $47 million annual operating budget. Before joining NBPTS, he served as executive director of the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO). He has extensive experience as a legislative advocate for education and in government relations with CASBO, the San Diego Office of Education, the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association, and the California School Boards Association.
Brian Lewis, a veteran of nonprofit educational organizations, was introduced Sunday as ISTEs incoming CEO. ISTE President Holly Jobe welcomed Lewis to the organization in front of a crowd of thousands before the opening keynote panel. These are exciting times for ISTEs mission, Jobe said. Schools face a difficult burden: They are tasked with preparing students for the future, but globalization and rapid technological changes have made it nearly impossible to predict what that future will look like. Unfortunately, the path that U.S. education is onemulating the traditional educational systems of highperforming nations, such as China, that emphasize long school hours and standardized testingis heading in the
wrong direction, according to Tuesdays keynote speaker, Yong Zhao. Zhao, a worldwide speaker and consultant who serves as presidential chair and associate dean for global education in the University of Oregons College of Education, will talk about the irony of this trend in U.S. education reforms, given that China is in the midst of trying to change its own system to encourage more innovation and entrepreneurship. The United States, he warns, needs to recognize what China
has already acknowledged: Standardized tests, such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), are misleading as indicators of education quality, and so-called high-performing nations, as measured by those tests, do not produce the kind of talents needed in the new global economy. I believe American education reform is on the wrong path, Zhao said. Drivenby the blind faith that test scores somehow indicate our future competitiveness,we aim to raise our test
Yong Zhao scores with more standardization and testing, while what we really need in the future is globally minded, creative, and entrepreneurial talents.

No organization can put on an event as large and interactive as the ISTE annual conference and exposition all by itself. Thats why ISTE is so thankful to have the assistance of its affiliates to help create and put on the worlds premier ed tech event. This year, ISTE has worked side by side with one of its oldest affiliates, ComputerUsing Educators Inc. (CUE), to plan and produce ISTE 2012. Bringing an event of this size to our region draws the national spotlight to the amazingly innovative work that educators in the western U.S. are doing, often with limited funding, said CUEs executive director and ISTE Board member Mike Lawrence. Its outstanding to have such
an amazing professional development opportunity right here in San Diego! CUE provided the core group of volunteers that coordinated the regional marketing and volunteer efforts. The organization also contributed conference content and events, including: SocIal Butterfly lounge. ISTE knows that twoor even three thought leaders are usually better than one. Thats why ISTE often partners with other top educational organizations to provide members with as much depth of content and as many resources as possible. This year, ISTE is collaborating with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). ISTE will be presenting sessions at the 2012 NCTE annual convention November 1518 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and at the 2013 NSTA national conference April 1114 in San Antonio, Texas. In exchange, both of these respected associations will be providing content at ISTE 2012.
NCTE is offering three sessions today focusing on how to use the resources from ReadWriteThink.org in the classroom as well as the ethics of using images and music in multimedia writing. (See http:// tinyurl.com/7jjyhb4 for session times and details.) The National Council of Teachers of English is delighted to share creative and meaningful ways to infuse technology into literacy content while addressing NCTEs 21st Century Literacies Framework at a conference that touches a broad spectrum of educators across the globe, said Mila Fuller, deputy executive director of NCTE. NSTA will present five sessions tomorrow about mobile devices and augmented reality in science education, STEM resources from the Concord Consortium,
and building effective learning communities for teachers. (See http://tinyurl. com/76gpsp3 for session times and details.) The overarching goals of the new Framework for K12 Science Education and the emerging Next Generation Science Standards are to ensure that all students have some appreciation of the beauty and wonder of science and engineering and are careful consumers of scientific and technological information related to their everyday lives, says Al Byers, assistant executive director of e-learning and government partnerships at NSTA. Our collaboration with ISTE ensures the broadest possible awareness to maximize this goal across both organizations respective national networks.

Attendees joined thought leader Michael Fullan to collaborate, network, and explore ways to implement new digitalage learning environments designed to meet the needs of todays digital citizens at ISTEs Leadership Symposium on Sunday morning. During this four-hour, interactive symposium titled Leading and Learning in the Digital Age, attendees developed strategies to shift their organizations thinking to bring about change and examined four cornerstones of digital age learning: Creating meaningful learning experiences Designing learning environments Moving beyond the textbook Knowing we are successful During breakout sessions, attendees chose a cornerstone that interested them and contributed ideas, thoughts, questions, and concerns. Facilitators collected their comments to help develop a new ISTE resource that focused on leading and learning in the digital age. This new resource is open to the public at http:// iste2012leadership.org. For me, the entire experience exemplified what ISTE is all about, said Chris Johnson, program chair for the symposium.More than 200 leaders at all levels from around the world came together to
learn, share, and form new ideas to take back to their organizationsall focused on creating the best learning environments for the worlds children. If that isnt ISTE, I dont know what is. The first cornerstone centered on how an organization can move to deeper and socially meaningful learning with the understanding that cognitive science, the globalization of the world, and the capabilities of technology have the potential to radically change instructional strategies. The second cornerstone focused on the development of new instructional strategies and structures of teaching and learning. As educators consider how to create deep and meaningful learning for students, they must look at reorganizing the learning experience in different ways. With the explosion of digital content, leaders must be aware of many issues when implementing a digital curriculum. The third cornerstone, moving beyond the textbook, focused on key issues of curating resources without becoming overwhelmed and finding ways to ensure quality and alignment with standards. This part of the symposium also focused on how to creatively crowdsource the development of curriculum and share resources. To address the growing emphasis on standards-based assessment and accountability, the fourth cornerstone focused on strategies and procedures for developing a culture of meeting learning targets. At-

tendees explored standards-based assessment around the world and discussed how to develop a culture within their organizations that values assessment and evaluation at all levels. ISTEs affiliates have a well-developed network of organizational leaders who share ideas all year long. But at the ISTE conference, they get to meet face to face and socialize a bit too! On Saturday, more than 125 affiliate leaders from 50 of ISTEs 80 affiliates spent the day learning with and from each other. Then they spent the evening catching up at the affiliate reception. Affiliates are local nonprofit member organizations that share ISTEs mission. Most affiliates cover a geographic locale, such as a state, but some reach out to regions and even countries. At Saturdays meeting, affiliate leaders attended round-table discussions on such topics as conference trends, social media, building member value, board recruitment and training, and supporting learning communities. Back by popular demand, a fast-paced keynote smackdown allowed nine popular keynote speakers four minutes each to promote themselves to the conference planners in the audience. For the first time, affiliates presented poster sessions demonstrating resources to help them become more effective. The 12 posters were on topics such as how affiliates can make a bigger impact with Twitter, creating a conference planner and mobile apps, and using technology for association management and community building. Advocacy is a high priority among affiliates, so members were encouraged
