Kelantan worst hit as dengue

cases continue to rise
PETALING JAYA: Dengue and
chikungunya cases have contin-
ued to rise, the latest statistics
from the Health Ministry show.
There were three deaths and
1,232 dengue cases on the fifth
week of this year (beginning
Feb 7), an increase of 219 cases
or 22% compared to the fourth
week of the year.
Kelantan recorded the high-
est increase of 162% and Johor,
Selangor and Perak saw an
increase of 40%, 33%, and 18%,
respectively.
There was also an increase
in the number of cases in Sabah
(13%), Malacca (10%), Pahang
(8%) and Sarawak (2%).
The total number of dengue
cases since the beginning of the
year stood at 6,766, compared
to 4,011 for the same period last
year.
The number of deaths also
increased to 18, compared to
seven for the same period last
year.
In a statement, the ministry
said there were 44 hot spots for
the outbreak and 1,672 premises
had been identified as breeding
grounds for Aedes mosquitos.
The ministry issued 1,950
summonses totalling RM65,151
and 311 notices for immediate
clean-up.
A total of 109 cases of chikun-
gunya were reported for the
first five weeks of the year, an
increase of 14% compared to the
first four weeks of the year. No
deaths were reported.
The cases were reported in
105 localities in 11 states, with
Kelantan and Selangor record-
ing the highest number of cases
– 26.
There were 21 cases in Perak,
11 in Johor, six in Pahang and
five each in Kuala Lumpur and
Putrajaya.

KUALA LUMPUR: Parts of the city will
be in darkness on March 28 when Kuala
Lumpur joins 1,000 cities worldwide to
celebrate Earth Hour.
Unlike the major blackout in 2005,
this switch-off in non-essential lights
from 8.30pm to 9.30pm (local time) is
aimed at promoting awareness in the
fight against climate change.
“The act of switching off non-essen-
tial lights is a simple and effortless step
that every person can take to trigger a
huge positive impact against climate
change,” WWF (World Wide Fund for
Nature) Malaysia chief executive of-
ficer Datuk Dr Dionysius Sharma said at
the launch of Earth Hour yesterday.
The launch kicked off WWF Malay-
sia’s drive to muster support and par-
ticipation of Malaysians for this event,
targeting at least five million individuals
and corporations as well as building
owners and the government.
One of Kuala Lumpur’s shining
beacons, Menara Kuala Lumpur, has
pledged its support and will be in an

and would like to call upon other
building owners to do the same, its

ambassador of Earth Hour.
Rina, of 8TV, said: “I’m happy that
Earth Hour is being made official in the
country and I’m proud to be part of it.
It’s time we gave back something to
mother earth.”
While other media have pledged
their support to provide air time for
Earth Hour, 8TV has taken a step further
by pledging to halt the transmission of
its programmes for an hour.
