Experiment 1: The Vernier and Micrometer Calipers

Abstract In measuring objects, there are many tools that can be used such as ruler, Questions and Answers 1. Differentiate the Vernier and micrometer scales. The major difference of the Vernier and micrometer calipers falls on their physical form and appearance. The former has a slider while the latter has a rotary handle. The vernier caliper consists of a main scale and a vernier scale which is attached to the main scale but movable throughout the length of the main scale. The micrometer caliper is a measuring instrument that is used when measuring small diameters. Micrometer is used in measuring diameters while Vernier caliper is used in measuring inside and outside diameter as well as depth. 2. Draw the figure for the micrometer readings below: i. 3.685 mm

ii. 1.596 mm

3. State some of the errors one might make in measuring length using both the Vernier and Micrometer calipers. 4. Determine the percentage error for an observed value of 1.112x10-5 if the standard value is 1.117x10-5.
