Mayor celebrates first Super Bowl victory
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
To say Mayor Randy Browns
life has been a whirlwind these
past few months would be an un-
derstatement.
Brown agrees.
Its been a crazy month if you
think about the month we had,
he said.
Brown won the Super Bowl
with the Baltimore Ravens as the
teams kicking coach.
The Ravens topped the San
Francisco 49ers 34-31 in a close
game on Feb. 3.
Brown has 21 years of NFL ex-
perience and had previously at-
tended a Super Bowl as a consult-
ant for the Philadelphia Eagles
during the 2004 season.
The win comes as redemption
for the Ravens following a disap-
pointing 2011 season. Former
Raven and Pro Bowl kicker Billy
Cundiff missed a 24-yard field
goal, which would have tied the
AFC Championship game late in
the fourth quarter against the
New England Patriots, sending
them to the Super Bowl that year.
Super Bowl XLVII was the first
of its kind for numerous reasons.
There was a heated sibling ri-
valry between head coaches and
brothers Jim and John Harbaugh,
and South Jersey was seemingly
behind both Brown and Audubon
native quarterback, Joe Flacco.
I really wanted to thank the
Special to The Sun
Baltimore Ravens kicking coach and Evesham Township Mayor Randy Brown and Ravens kicker Justin Tucker celebrate the Feb. 3 Super
Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers. Brown got the chance to hold the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy. It was breathtaking, Brown said.
You always dream you would have a chance to hold that trophy, but when you consider the odds, it gets small. Its an amazing feeling. please see VICTORY, page 9

Tim Ronaldson, an eight-year
veteran of Elauwit, has been
named executive editor of
Elauwit Media, parent company
of The Sun newspapers.
He replaces Alan Bauer, one of
the founders of Elauwit Media,
who has been editor and general
manager since 2004.
Ronaldson recently has served
Elauwit Media as director of digi-
tal media. He now will lead The
Suns news department.
Alan is the most versatile
newsman Ive ever met, said Dan
McDonough, Jr., a co-founder of
Elauwit Media and the compa-
nys current chairman of the
board. Beyond that, hes been a
great business partner, too. His
fingerprints will long last on this
organization we built together,
and thats a great thing.
Ronaldson joined Elauwit
Media in March 2005 as The Suns
first managing editor.
He ascended the ranks as the
company grew larger, from one
weekly newspaper in Haddon-
field to a combined 14 in the
South Jersey and Central Jersey
markets.
Tim has the Elauwit spirit at
his core, McDonough said. Im
excited to see how he will leave
his mark while continuing our
tradition of being the go-to news
source for our readers.
Ronaldson also has served as
associate publisher for Elauwit
business publications in South
Carolina, and has worked for
Elauwits Networks division,
based in Columbia, S.C.
Im honored and humbled to
be named Executive Editor, and
am very excited about helping to
move this company forward,
Ronaldson said.
I thank Alan for his training,
leadership and support.
Ronaldson said he plans to
build off the solid community
news foundation that Bauer cre-
ated at The Suns, while focusing
on key areas that are necessary
for future success in the industry
such as a focus on online and
mobile content.

A snow-starved South Jersey which hasnt seen much accumulation of the fluffy white stuff since
early 2011 took full advantage of the few inches that fell across the region on Saturday, Feb. 9. Even
with grassy patches popping up along the hill and a slushy mess of mud at the bottom, visitors to Laurel
Acres Park had a blast sledding throughout the morning. Above, Marlton resident Phil Rotindo holds onto
his daughter, Ashley, 8, while sledding.

I
f you sit on a school board or mu-
nicipal governing body, youre en-
tering the part of the year that
probably causes you the most
headaches. Its budget time. Its time to
do the impossible: provide outstanding
service for little or no money.
A few years ago, Gov. Christie made
headlines and more than a few ene-
mies when he slashed state funding
and eventually added a 2 percent cap
on tax hikes.
Since then, at least some of the
money has returned. Later this month,
the governor will release state funding
figures for this year.
But its safe to say that no district or
town will find itself rolling in dough.
Governing bodies will continue to face
decisions that involve reducing or
holding the line on services and/or
raising taxes.
One bright spot some would say
the only bright spot to come of this is
that many governing bodies these days
have made the budget process open to
the public. Transparent is the watch-
word today.
Its a smart move to involve the pub-
lic everyone from those who want to
cut taxes to the bone to those who
would like to see expanded services.
When the public is invited in, they
not only see the difficult choices lead-
ers have to make, but they also feel like
they have a voice. Leaders are listening
to them. Their input is valued. While
not everyone will be happy with every
decision, at least there is a sense of in-
clusion and ownership of the
process.
We encourage everyone to get in-
volved with their local budget process-
es this year. In most instances, there
will be hearings. Items will be posted
online. Its easy to offer your sugges-
tions to the people who eventually will
make the final decision.
And, chances are, your feedback will
be appreciated.
in our opinion
Budget time
Its that time of year again when tough decisions have to be made
Get involved
Think taxes are too high? Think servic-
es have been cut too deeply? Now is
the time to make your voice heard. Its
budget season, and most local govern-
ing bodies have ways to involve the
public in the decision-making process.
So speak up before the final votes are
counted.

Students to perform in jazz festival
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
Lenape Regional High School
District students will be present-
ing their third jazz festival this
month on Feb. 22 at Seneca High
School.
Cherokees first show in the se-
ries was held at Lenape High
School on Feb. 15.
The upcoming Feb. 22 jazz festi-
val will be the first time in two
years that Seneca will be the host.
According to Seneca band di-
rector Doug Barber, two years ago
the festival was snowed out and
canceled.
Last year, not enough schools
showed interest in the festival.
Were excited to be hosting all
four bands from the district,
Barber said. Theyll all be com-
ing out to compete.
Barber is looking forward to
new acoustics in the auditorium
following a recent upgrade of the
facility.
Were really looking forward
to seeing the improvement and
how everything sounds, he said
Cherokee will be one of 10 area
high schools competing for top
honors awarded at the end of the
night.
Cherokees jazz band is made
up of 19 students from all classes.
They perform classic and con-
temporary original big band ma-
terial, jazz band director Earl
Phillips said.
Cherokee has two jazz classes
that meet during the school day
and one ensemble that participate
in competitions.
Phillips strives to be creative
when choosing the music stu-
dents will be performing.
Throughout the course of the
year, we will always add new
repertoire into our set list. It's
something I'm very proud of and
something the band members
enjoy as well, Phillips said. I try
to include a classic piece of litera-
ture from some of the heavy hit-
ter bands, for example, Duke
Ellington, Basie, Thad Jones,
Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, as well
as perform the music of contem-
porary big band composers such
as Dave H olland and Bob
Mintzer.
He remains confident in his
students and their ability to com-
pete with the other schools.
In the past three years, we've
placed third in Division I NJAJE
State Finals, Phillips said.
Jazz competitions arent the
same as marching band; it differs
in size, sound and the fierceness
of competition.
I find there is a great differ-
ence between marching band and
jazz ensemble mainly because of
the main characteristics of each
ensemble, Phillips said.
Marching band's reliance on
precision versus jazz's reliance on
improvisation should set two
completely different vibes.
Jazz bands dont rely on chore-
ography or the flashiness of the
show for points, either.
The ensembles will take the
stage to play in front of local mu-
sicians for the top spot.
Trophies are given out at the
end of the night for each section
and to the best soloists.
Out of all of the players of the
night, the four best soloists are
awarded for their performance,
Barber said.
The festival will be held on Feb.
22 at 5 p.m. in the Seneca High
School auditorium.
Seneca High School is located
at 110 Carranza Road, Tabernacle.

Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict website at lrhsd.org.

Welcome home a hero at Stratford bowling alley
people in Marlton for their sup-
port, especially the kids, Brown
said, adding he received hun-
dreds of text messages, phone
calls, emails and signed shirts
from students and kids from Eve-
sham. Theyre tremendous. It
felt like I was coaching not just
the team, but the town.
The game was close.
The Ravens seemed to be hold-
ing an unbreakable 21-6 lead be-
fore the halftime show.
Minutes after the halftime en-
tertainment, provided by Beyon-
c Knowles, half of the lights in
the Superdome went out.
The blackout lasted more than
30 minutes, acting as an unex-
pected second halftime.
After the game resumed play,
Ravens wide receiver Jacoby
Jones ran for a 108-yard touch-
down on a kick return, breaking
records and making Super Bowl
history, making it 28-6 after the
extra point.
The 49ers then scored 17 unan-
swered points, closing the gap to
28-23.
It [the blackout] affected us
the same way [as the 49ers]. They
were going to come back no mat-
ter what, Brown said. I wish it
wasnt that long of a wait either,
but we were able to hold on to the
win.
Browns kicker Justin Tucker
kicked two field goals in the
fourth quarter, the second of the
two a 38-yarder that solidified the
Ravens win.
The victory was more exciting
for Brown surrounded by family.
His wife, children, brother, sis-
ter-in-laws and mother traveled to
New Orleans for the game to
cheer and support the coach.
Winning was 100 times better
than I ever could have thought,
he said, noting the importance of
his family. It really was incredi-
ble.
Brown got his chance to hold
the Vince Lombardi Trophy for
the first time on the field after
NFL commissioner Roger Good-
ell presented it to the team.
It was breathtaking, Brown
said. You always dream you
would have a chance to hold that
trophy, but when you consider the
odds, it gets small. Its an amazing
feeling.
He was excited to be able to
hold the trophy again on the
plane ride home, he said.
Two days after the win, the
team returned to Baltimore for
the parade and celebration.
The parade was so incredible
because of the pure size and num-
bers of people that came out.
There were hundreds of thou-
sands of people, Brown said.
When we got into the stadium,
there had to be 95,000 people. The
stadium seats 75,000, they had to
let people on the field.
Browns family participated in
the parade. His 4-year-old daugh-
ter Mackenzie told her mom her
arm hurt from waving so much.
Trish told her she better get
used to it because the princesses
in Disneyland are going to be
doing that much waving, Brown
said.
While the Browns arent travel-
ing to Disney World like Flacco,
they look forward to their contin-
ued celebration and family vaca-
tion in Anaheim in the spring.
Well forever be the 2012 world
champions, Brown said. We
were the 47th team to do it.

parade, visit

Bishop Eustace students from
Marlton sign letters of intent
On Feb. 6, Alex "AP" Pecora
and Kelly Quinn, senior captains
on the Bishop Eustace field hock-
ey team each signed letters of in-
tent to play Division I field hock-
ey.
Alex accepted a scholarship to
the University Of Iowa and Kelly
accepted a scholarship to the Uni-
versity of Richmond.
During their careers at Eu-
stace, both were selected First
Team All State as Eustace ap-
peared three times in the Group II
State Championship, winning
two.
Kelly and Alex began playing
field hockey together as fourth
graders and were three-year
starters at DeMasi Middle School.
Alex would go on to play club
field hockey for Spirit Of USA
and Kelly for WC Eagles. Each
captured one National Title as
USA Field Hockey's number 1
ranked team in the country.
While at Eustace, Alex also
earned varsity letters in softball
while Kelly captained the varsity
basketball team and twice earned
trips to the NJSIAA Track and
Field Meet of Champions.
