wheelchair every can tab counts. You

The World Day of Prayer has its roots
in an ecumenical day of prayer organized
by women in Canada and the US in 1920.
It became the World Day of Prayer in
1922, and Christians around the world
began celebrating this event on the first
Friday of March. This year, the women of
France organized the service titled I was
a Stranger and You Welcomed Me. Please

James Barry

Born to Lil Michaluk (nee Skul-
moski) and Peter Samual Michaluk
who passed away in New Wesminster,
BC, our friend James passed away at
the age of 65 in the Nicola Valley
Health Centre at noon, Valentines day.
James believed his grandfather
Michaluk, who passed away in
Dauphin, MB, immigrated from the
Ukraine, while his grandfather Skul-
moski, who worked for a rail com-
pany, immigrated from Poland to
settle in Pine River, MB.
James came to Merritt from Pentic-
ton, and back again, many times. You
will have noticed him, the tall lanky
guy always walking around town, sit-
ting at doorways, having a smoke,
sometimes sporting his best gear, other
times barely dressed from the waist up.
Well known to the RCMP, local fire
fighting crews and local establish-
ments from where he was banned, he
could be a pain in the butt, but that
was James. When he first arrived in
Merritt he sported a badge on his hat
the local mental health workers had
given him which read: Hi, Im Jim, I
have a brain injury. Later when I got
to know him better and challenged
him on the brain injury story he gave
to Mental Health, he replied with a
grin, I had to tell them something!
On pay day it wasnt unusual for
him to buy bling and wrist watches...
once sporting four wrist watches dec-
orating both arms. I think they were
his rainy day funds as he always had
too much month at the end of his
money. He was generous and would
try to buy us food and gifts, but as a
trickster and a packrat we could count
on finding trinkets, lawn ornaments,
little teddy bears, food and large ani-
mal bones he collected from his camp
presented on our lawns and doorsteps.
Some he bought, some he found, some
he collected.
James appeared to be relatively
alone in this world, but he had his
community of people here. We will
miss him, but will cherish his memory
in our hearts and his ashes (appropri-
ately cremated) in our gardens. He
was sometimes obstreperous, cranky,
and loud but he was also a gentle-
man and a friend who loved good
laugh and a good debate. We will miss
him.
Recycling? Trying to do my share to help the environment, I set up a trash basket and
posted above it this suggestion: "Empty water bottles here." I should have been a little
more specific, because when I went to check it later, I didn't find any bottles in it. But it
was full of water.
