Ta STICHTING OUD IN AFRIKA

FROM OUD IN AFRICA MUNDlKA C/O G & C CONVENT MUNDlKA.
It gives us great pleasure to extend our warmest gratitude to the stichting Oud in Afrika
program in the Netherlands, for the fmancial support you have given us in the past year.
As reflected in the table on financial report, last year you sent us fmancial support of Ksh
2,631,771/=. At the beginning ofthe year the O.I.A account had BID ofKsh 293,626/=.
This money has enabled us to carry out various activities for older persons to continue
leading a dignified kind of life.
As you are aware, G & C Sisters caters for the needs of elderly destitute and sick people.
Mainly in the Western part of Kenya, though a few of our c1ients at the OPH came from
Eastern Uganda. At present there are 114 clients including the 28 at the OPH and 86 that
receive home based care (HBC). The main beneficiaries ofthe O.LA project are the
latter, that is HBC, and indeed they are grateful for that support.

Using the money you send to the O.LA project in Mundika, the progress for the year
2008 is as follows: 17 houses for elderly people were build, 5 houses repaired, 16 toilets
(pit latrines) dug and built, 57 out of 86 older persons that own small pieces ofland had
their land ploughed and all the necessary farm in-put (fertilizer & seeds) provided. The
harvest was better for others but not allo This is mainly due to different types of soil at
different places and also the difference in the sizes of piece of land. The highest harvest
of maize among the HBC older persons was 180kgs while the lowest harvested 40kg of
maize. In addition to that, most of the HBC clients were encouraged at least each one to
have a kitchen garden where they planted their local vegetables for their consumption.
Last year there was plenty of rain as from the Month of June up to November'2008,
which was excellent for local vegetables but ruined some other plants such as beans and

groundnuts. The projectsë'supported the older persons by supplying seeds and fertilizers
for vegetable gardens and also by advising the families on how to go about with their
kitchen gardens. At the moment as I write this report, it is too dry and hot outside hence
very difficult to find vegetables (greens). Generally, there is shortage offood in the
country.

As I have named this 'End Year Report' I cannot let it go without mentioning one or two
points that took place in Kenya at the beginning ofthe year 2008;
As most ofyou may be aware, for Kenyans there was no celebration to welcome the year
2008! The fust quarter of the year felt and seemed like a nightmare for most of us. There
was no peace in the country due to post-election skirmishes. Thanks be to God! At least
the Kenyans have been able to celebrate the end of 2008 and welcome 2009 peacefully.
However, the aftermath ofthe post-election violence still has not so good impact on the
citizens ofthe country. The prizes of almost aU commodities shot up and still climb the
ladder. The Kenyans keep wondering, when wiIl this end? To make the matters worse,
there is scarcity of food in the country. Common and poor people are starving. Just a
week ago it was over the news that some children feIl ill after eating wild fruits due to
hunger. The children were admitted to a nearby hospital and eventually died.

The beneficiaries ofO.I.N HA programs are so grateful to the Stichting O.l.A and HA
international for having given them a life to live through the support offered.
DIRECT QUOTE FROM SAR/NA ABAT/ (a beneficiary with 8 orphaned
grandchildren). "I thank Godfor the Sisters ofGrace & Compassionfor selecting me to
be one of the beneficiaries of the old age program. When I heard people talking about
children dying after eating wild fruits, I said to my neighbor, 'If it were not for Srs having
pity on me, my grandchildren too would have died for the same or because of
starvation! "
Ou behalf of the Srs of G & C, I thank the Stichting O.LA for the financial support you
sent us yearly. It is by this that we are empowered to help the poor older persons and their
indirect beneficiaries, e.g. Sabina and grandchildren. Although things are expensive and
so dear for any poor and common person like our clients, we appreciate that by the

support ofthe Stichting O.I.A we are able to meet most ofthe necessary needs of older
persons as reflected in the financial report.

May God bless you abundantly for your kindness and generosity.

With Regards S--v 4~
