Students in Denise Dutchers fth-grade class at Creekside Intermediate School thank the Education Foundation of Dexter.

With the Education Foundation of Dexter closing the books for 2012, there isnt much time to look back fondly on the organizations impressive achievements. The foundations annual auction is Saturday at the Ann

Arbor County Club, 4699 E. Loch Alpine Drive in the Loch Alpine neighborhood. Called a Night for Excellence, the festivities begin at 6 p.m. Last year EFD issued some $35,610 in grant dollars in response to 34 grant requests spanning every school building in the Dexter Community School District. Those figures for

the 2012-13 school year will depend heavily on how much money is raised at foundations annual auction this Saturday. Last years fundraiser tallied $42,000, donated by a large list of Dexter businesses and community members who believe in

Cityhood Up for a Vote

What seemed to be put on the backburner was the new proposal to incorporate the Village of Dexter into to a city. Currently, what residents call the village, is part of Scio and Webster townships and votes in both townships. At Tuesdays meeting, community members received a copy of the Village of Dexter Cityhood Fact Sheet explaining policy, government, boundary, and fiscal changes that may occur if Village of Dexter residents vote yes on the May 17 ballot. A couple residents said they had heard a negative response and a couple said they had heard a positive response about the pending cityhood. However, there was no personal commentary or statements offered by attendees during the meeting. Mary Fialkowski did not make a comment during the meeting but shared that she is not happy with the decision to put cityhood on the ballot. The word city just doesnt fit Dexter, she said later.

to Dexter Huron Park. Dexter residents commuting to Ann Arbor may have new options as the Ann Arbor Transit Authority (AATA) has made a statement to work with the Western-Washtenaw Area Value Express (WAVE) bus service help find funding, expand bus service, as well as optimize stops on the No. 9 route. These changes to transit would allow commuters to go to the University of Michigan, Washtenaw Community College, Eastern Michigan University, VA Hospital and all Washtenaw County buildings in less than two hours. Residents would also be able to make it through the entire village roundtrip in less than an hour. This would be safer and reduce the number of teenagers in cars, said Todd

About 30 Dexter residents attended the town hall meeting at the Dexter District Library. Fialkowski, 73, was raised in Detroit and has lived in Pinckney, but found her home in the Village of Dexter 40 years ago. Most people like it just the way it is. We will lose our connections to the townships, and have no say about big stores and such, expressed Fialkowski. It is difficult to tell what the majority opinion is at this time. Council President Shawn Keough said he had only heard positive responses. In the meantime, Dexter residents have facts, figures and open forums to ask questions that can inform their vote in three months.

Other topics discussed

Traffic and increased connection to resources in Washtenaw County were hot button topics. Also, discussed were new pedestrian trails from the Hudson Mills Metropark

Artistica celebrates ve-year anniversary

By Sean Dalton

Artistica co-owners Lisa Wandres and Pam OHara have designed this weeks Fourth Friday show as a celebration of the in-door art gallery and gift shops five years in business. The actual anniversary date for the doors opening at Artistica was Feb. 1, which allowed Wandres and OHara, and then partners Jill Love and Cherilyn Fontana, to make a business out of promoting local artists. Lisa and I needed to get slides

taken at (Jill Loves studio) and we all said wouldnt it be great if we could have a shop, OHara recalled Tuesday. Once Fontana was brought into the mix, the four partners spent a frantic month making Artistica happen. Were all artists ... Ive done art shows and have a background in startup companies, so it didnt take long, OHara said. Mary Bowe had just bought Dexter Picture Frame Co., and let us work out of the Side Door Gallery during November and December. Once their current space at 3203

Broad St. became vacant, the partners spent the following January getting the shop in order before opening the doors for the first time Feb. 1, 2008. Artistica has been featuring Michigan, particularly Washtenaw County artists, at a brisk pace. There are currently 25 artists featured at the gallery shop currently. Were always looking for artists to jury and welcome them into Artistica, OHara said. Artistica features a wide array of items throughout the year ranging from paintings to the work of jewelry artists, potters, fiber artist-

ry, photography, and any other item that creative individuals can think to use as a medium for creating physical manifestations of human expression. OHara says that compliments that visitors to the shop make about it reaffirm for her that Artisticas aim is being met: We usually hear comments about the wide variety of unique gifts we have ... so we try and keep a wide range of different kinds of art here, The compliments also remind
