Library board rejects term limits for members

Board member term limits rejected; treasurer term limits recommended

During an otherwise dry discussion to update its bylaws, the seven members of the Belleville Area District Library decided an issue that is sometimes a source of disagreement among reasonable men and women: term limits for elected officers. The bylaw stipulates that election of officers shall occur each January. The change introduced was a proposal limiting the holder of a board office to three consecutive terms. I totally disagree with term limits, board member John Juriga said. The discussion of bylaw changes, up unitl that point, had focused on revising the word

than to then. Board member Joy Cichewicz said her issue was with term limits for the library board treasurer in order to minimize the risk of fraud or embezzlement that may happen with a longserving treasurer. Other board members responded favorably to Cichewicz suggestion. They decided to have the issue come before the Library Policy Committee for a recommendation, and to return to the library board meeting for a vote in April. On the subject of term limits for other officers, the vote was close, reflecting the differences of opinion on this issue. BADL representatives Michael Boelter, Cichewicz, MJ Dawson and John Juriga voted against term limits, whereas Christina Brasil, Elaine Gutierrez and Joe Monte voted for limits. The motion to impose term limits failed by a 4-3 vote. In other business, library board representatives confirmed the librarys investment policy objectives as safety and diversification. It does not mean were going to do anything different with our money. Library Director Debra Green said,

J.P. Morgan Chase Bank was confirmed as the librarys depository. In other financial business, board members were pleased to see that expense for the first half of the librarys fiscal year, from July 1 through December 31, 2012, had been below budget. The actual expense for that period had been $428,000, primarily for salaries and benefits for library staff, compared with a first half budget of $473,000. In her monthly report to the board, Library Director Debra Green said the recent writing workshop sponsored by the library was a big, albeit crowded success, with 47 people on hand to learn to polish their writing skills with local published author Beverly Jenkins. Green also said there will be a weekly series of hands-on science programs each Wednesday evening from Feb. 27 through March 27. The program is designed for young people ages six to 12. Fourth graders Izzy and Julia are excited about writing to their favorite sports stars.

Students trade gym shoes for paper and pencil

Under the guidance of physical education teacher Angela Scroggie, Tyler Elementary students took pencil in hand and wrote letters to their favorite sports stars and teams last week. In an annual project that integrates writing and physical education, students were encouraged to let their sports heroes know why they look up to them and what character traits they possess that kids really admire. I get to see a whole new side of the kids, observed Scroggie. They get as excited about writing these letters as they do in the gym! After the letters are sent, students anxiously await their responses and are often surprised by the personal notes that they receive. Many students choose to write back again when they get a response, making this an ongoing writing project that gives them an authentic purpose and audience, explained Scroggie. When asked if she enjoyed taking a week from gym activity to do an extra writing assignment, fourth grader Isabelle said, We all loved writing the letters! It was fun to picture our heroes actually reading our letters and writing us back. I ask every day if my response came yet--I cant wait!
