Iran leads Muslim World: Launches Satellite

Tehran: Iran entered the exclusive club of nations
capable of putting things in Earth orbit on 2 February,
when it launched a small satellite using a homegrown
rocket for the first time. Called Omid, or “Hope”, the
satellite is a 40-centimetre-wide cube with a mass of 27
kilograms.
But there has been much debate about whether the
rocket that launched it was relatively crude and
inefficient, operating at the limits of its capabilities, or a
more advanced type that could eventually be upgraded to
put astronauts in orbit. Iran has released few details about
the rocket, called Safir-2, leaving outsiders to guess at its
capabilities.
Initially, outside rocket experts thought the Safir-2
was based on scud missile technology.
Scuds, and other rockets derived from them, pack
less punch than more advanced rockets because they
burn a relatively inefficient fuel - a mixture of kerosene
and nitric acid.
Even a two-stage scud-type rocket, with the second
stage separating and igniting after the first stage provided
an initial burst of speed, would not be powerful enough to
reach orbit.
So it was thought that Iran had mounted a very small,
solid-fuelled third stage on this kind of launch vehicle to
provide the final kick needed to get Omid to orbit.
But soon after Omid's launch, amateur satellite
trackers reported that the final stage, which also reached
orbit, appears much too bright to be a tiny third stage,
hinting that it might be a two-stage vehicle using more
advanced technology instead.
New calculations have reinforced this view, showing
that a two-stage rocket the size of Safir-2 could get Omid
to orbit if it had ditched the scud design in favour of
engines that use more efficient hydrazine fuel.
“I think it's (now) much more likely that it really is a
two-stage rocket,” Geoffrey Forden of MIT told New
Scientist. Forden analyses the rocket programs of Iran
and other countries, including China and Russia.
David Wright of the Union of Concerned Scientists in
Cambridge, Massachusetts, has posted the results of his
calculations online.
For the calculations, Wright relied on the size and
mass of Safir-2 reported in the Iranian media, which gave
it a length of 22 meters, a diameter of 1.25 meters and a
mass of 26 tons. He also determined the relative sizes of
the two stages from photos of the rocket posted online.
Given the rocket's volume, its reported mass is
consistent with a type of hydrazine called UDMH, which
has long been used by China in its space launch vehicles,
Wright says.
Assuming the fuel had the efficiency of UDMH,
Wright also calculated the rocket's thrust and specific
impulse, a measure of how much momentum a rocket can
provide per kilogram of fuel burned. The calculated
figures are enough to give a payload like Omid a speed of
7.6 kilometers per second at an altitude of 240
kilometers, which is about right for the orbit Omid is
observed to be in.
“I don’t know for sure that that’s what they did, but
(this) would seem to give Iran the capability to do this
with two stages, and the reports coming out of Iran all
seem to be pretty definite that it was two stages,” Wright
told New Scientist.
If Iran really has developed more advanced rockets
that can burn more efficient fuel, then it is a step closer to
launching people into space, Forden says. Reza
Taghipour, head of Iran's Aerospace Industries
Organization, has said this is a goal Iran hopes to achieve.
The Long March rockets that China uses to put its
taikonauts in orbit burn UDMH, although these are
much larger and more powerful than the Safir-2.
“(Iran) could get a person up into low-Earth orbit
certainly within a decade, at the rate they're going,"
Forden says. "Whether or not the guy can return
safely is another question. A lot of things have to go
right.” n

First woman minister ignites hopes

appointment by royal decree of a Saudi
woman, Nora bint Abdullah Al-Fayez, as
the deputy education minister for girls'
affairs.
"This is an honor not only for me, but
for all Saudi women. In the presence of a
comprehensive operational team, I
believe I'll be able to face challenges and
create positive change," Al-Fayez told
Arab News.
Al-Fayez began her career as a
schoolteacher in 1982 working her way
up to become in 2001 the director general
of the women's section at the Institute of
Public Administration. Her long
experience in the educational sector and
her husband's encouragement and
support paved the way for her to reach
this position.
Many Saudis welcomed the new
deputy minister expressing hope in her
appointment. A woman educator working
in a supervisory position said this was a
wise decision to serve and develop the
Kingdom's educational sector.
"This is a successful step. We've
always suffered from having a man
occupy the position. A woman knows
what problems and challenges her peers
face. It's a change for the better," said the

A Revolution of Hope

"Islam wishes to bring all humanity under the
umbrella of justice… It does not take the sword to
export this ideology," Imam Khomeini said many years
ago.
Hope. People need and deserve hope. Oppressed
people need to believe that somehow, things will get
better; if not for themselves then certainly for their
children.
Islam is a religion of hope. It is not a religion of hate,
violence, or terrorism, but rather is a religion that
emphasizes social justice. It is a religion that gives
oppressed people hope of being freed from tyrants and
tyranny.
The Islamic Revolution of Iran galvanized
oppressed Muslims and non-Muslims alike with
renewed hope, not only in the Middle East but also
around the world. It demonstrated that oppressed
people acting under the guiding principles of Islam
could overthrow a ruthless dictator, even one who was
supported by the United States.
Mohammad Reza Shah, installed by a CIA-
engineered coup in 1953, ruled with an iron fist,
brutally suppressing any opposition with his SAVAK
secret police. In the

helicopter gunships to
regain control of the
city.. On September 8,
1978, Black
Friday, hundreds of
Iranians were gunned down by
the shah's commandos in Jaleh
Square in Tehran. It is estimated that
over 50,000 Iranians were martyred in the
tumultuous year prior to the triumph of the Islamic
Revolution and Ayatollah Khomeini's return.
The joy from the victory of the Islamic Revolution
on February 11, 1979 was so great that in Najaf, Iraq,
Ayatollah Mohammad Baqir as-Sadr declared a three-
day holiday at the seminary and sent his personal
disciple to Tehran, while students demonstrated
carrying pictures of the revolution's victorious leader,
Ayatollah Khomeini.
Islam challenged the established order of tyranny
and oppression from its very inception in the time of the
Prophet Mohammad (S) as Ayatollah Mohammad
Baqir as-Sadr writes, "Islam was not a superficial,
reformatory process in society, but was rather a radical
and revolutionary process aimed at the building of a
new society."
For Muslims, fighting against aggression,
aggressors, and oppressive governments falls within
the scope of the much-maligned and misunderstood
word jihad, as the Holy Quran commands: "Fight
against aggressors until oppression is stopped." (2:193)
And among Muslims, the Shia have always been on
the forefront of fighting for social justice. For the Shia
Muslims, social justice is not merely a theoretical issue
for debate in seminaries but rather a practical principle
to be implemented on a social level.
Shia scholars (mujtahids) have been in the forefront
of political activism in Iran from the beginning of the
Qajar dynasty around 1800, during the Constitutional
Movement of 1905 to 1911, and through the years of the
hated British-installed Pahlavi dynasty. This trend
intensified in 1963 with Ayatollah Khomeini's first
public declarations against the dictator Mohammad
Reza Shah and culminated in the Imam's victorious
return to Iran on February 1, 1979 to a cheering crowd
of three million citizens at Tehran's airport.
The Western powers responded to the Islamic
Revolution by launching a multi-frontal attack. The
Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, fearing the spread
of the revolution to Muslims under Soviet rule. Israel
invaded Lebanon to suppress any possible Islamic
uprising in the south. The French strengthened their
support of the Maronite government in Lebanon and
openly sold arms to Saddam Hussein. The United States
rushed military aid to the ruthless Iraqi dictator,
enabling him to crush a massive Shia uprising.
Ever fearful of the hope inspired by the Islamic
Revolution in Iran, the United States again allowed
Saddam to crush a popular revolt known as the Shaban
Intifada that followed the Persian Gulf War of 1991.
U.S. President George H. W. Bush, in typical
doublespeak, first incited Iraqis to revolt against
Saddam and then refused to come to their aid. Why?
The Americans panicked, fearing Iranian influence,
when they mistook pictures of Ayatollah as-Sayyid Abu
al-Qasim al-Khoei on posters carried by the resistance
fighters to be pictures of Ayatollah Khomeini.
Hezbollah and Hamas are popular in Lebanon and
Gaza respectively because these Islamic movements
give hope to the oppressed people in those regions.
Both provide needed social services and have built
schools and hospitals while fighting against U.S.-
supported Zionist aggressors who seem intent on
destroying them.
There are those in the West who would call
followers of Ayatollah Khomeini, Sayyid Hassan
Nasrallah of Hezbollah, and Sheikh Ahmad Yassin of
Hamas terrorists. They refer to Hezbollah as a terrorist
group, Hamas resistance fighters as terrorists, and Iran
as a state sponsor of terrorism.
All of these leaders and organizations have fought
and continue to fight against tyrants and tyranny. All of
these organizations have been inspired by the hope
created by the Islamic Revolution of Iran and Imam
Khomeini.
