AM1100 - ENGINEERING MECHANICS

ASSIGNMENT 1
Late date for submission: 08th February 2013.

1. Determine the magnitude P of the vertical force required to lift the wheelbarrow free of the ground at point B. The combined mass of the wheelbarrow and its load is 110kg with center of mass at G.

3. Calculate the magnitude of the force supported by the pin at C under the action of the 900N load applied to the bracket. Neglect friction in the slot.

2. The uniform 15m pole has a mass of 150kg and is supported by its smooth ends against the vertical walls and by the tension T in the vertical cable. Compute the reactions at A and B.

4. A slender rod of mass m1 is welded to the horizontal edge of a uniform semicylindrical shell of mass m2. Determine an expression for the angle with the horizontal made by the diameter of the shell through m1.

5. Three identical steel balls, each of mass m, are placed in the cylindrical ring which rests on a horizontal surface and whose height is slightly greater than the radius of the balls. The diameter of the ring is such that the balls are virtually touching one another. A fourth identical ball is then placed on top of the three balls. Determine the force P exerted by the ring on each of the three lower balls.

7. Solve for the forces in members BE and BD of the truss which supports the load L. All interior angles are 600 or 1200.

8. Determine the forces in members BI, CI and HI for the loaded truss. All angles are 300, 600 or 900.

6. Determine the forces in members AB, CG and DE of the loaded truss.
