Spreading the Spirit of Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Chairmans message Technopark-TBI is the first Business Incubator which has been operating successfully in Technopark. Technopark is the largest and greenest technology park of the Country with world class IT infrastructure facilities in a resort like environment. T-TBIs primary goal has been identifying and promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and employment through business incubation activity. With the leadership of committed business experts and with the co-operation of dedicated employees, support of Department of Science & Technology (DST) and networking with Universities and premier academic institutions of the state T-TBI has made significant strides. The T-TBI is acting as a platform for the new and innovative entrepreneurs to develop their ideas into products and services and build businesses out of them. Technopark has launched several other complementary initiatives like Technopark Business Incubation Centre (TBIC), National Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (NCIIE), Technopark- TePP Outreach Centre (T-TUC) and Technopark Software Engineering Competency Centre (TSECC) to create an eco system that nurtures and supports entrepreneurs. Unlike other business incubators, Technopark-TBI is unique in itself because of its novelty in spreading techno-entrepreneurship among the students and innovators. Technopark TBI is the pioneer in introducing and organizing various programmes like Technopreneur workshops, Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps, Entrepreneurship Development Programmes, residential Faculty Development Programmes, Bar camps, Boot camps, One-to-one and panel discussions, Software Engineering workshops, online mentoring and networking, TechTop the all India student project competition with highest prize money, Engineering students project exhibitions, Entrepreneurship Development Cells, TBI Extension Centres, Virtual Incubation and Pre-incubation facilities. Besides, Technopark TBI is financially supporting the budding Technopreneur through Seed Support System and molding them technically to become successful entrepreneurs. It is a matter of pride that Technopark-TBI bagged the National Award for the Best Technology Business Incubator in India for the year 2007. The inspiration given by Technopark-TBI to the society in creating an entrepreneurship culture among the student community as well as creating employment generators in the College campuses is highly

significant. It is indeed a great pleasure to see that the services rendered by Technopark TBI in promoting technopreneurship is triggering the industrial and economic regeneration in the State of Kerala. We wish to place on record our gratitude to the various agencies of Govt of India and the Govt of Kerala and the multitude of institutions and individuals supporting us in this great initiative. Let me also wish the dedicated team in Technopark greater success in future.

Secretarys Message I have seen and interacted with thousands of students, but this is the first time a group of students have come up to me and told me that they dreamed to be job creators and not job seekers. This is a very fascinating and happy moment for me to see the changes that students are trying to bring in to our country, said Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam, when he met the founding team of Torque Technology Solutions, the first students incubated company in TechnoparkTechnology Business Incubator, Kerala. Technopark launched the Business Incubation programmes, Technopark Business Incubation Centre (T-BIC) in the year 2002 with Government of Kerala support. Technopark has started Technology business incubator in 2007 and in no time it became one of the best technology business incubators in the country. Technopark Technology Business Incubator (T-TBI) is a joint initiative of Technopark, Trivandrum and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. T-TBI is registered as a Society on 7th June 2006 under Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act XII of 1955. Our efforts got recognised when Technopark Technology Business Incubator got DST support on 1st April 2007. T-TBI has phased its activities to maintain the status of a Regional TBI in the state with extensive networking among all Engineering Colleges and Management Institutes in the state in association with Higher Education Department & Directorate of Technical Education, Govt of Kerala. The State Government recognized Technopark as a Centre of Excellence for this purpose. T-TBI has been giving admission to technology development and product based companies to become successful business enterprises. T-TBI also extends mentoring services through various technology and management experts who are proficient in guiding the Incubatees. TTBI provide Incubatees with necessary infrastructure support, technology/ prototype development support, research assistance, help in getting VC funding and Seed Support, mentoring & business consulting assistance and do whatever is necessary to make the start-up a success. T-TBI is providing a 10,000 sq. ft fully furnished office modules of sizes ranging from 150 sq. ft to 300 sq. ft. with plug and play facilities to house the incubation companies. Another 2000 sq. ft. of this space is set aside for Incubator office, Laboratory, Library etc. and is used as training rooms and faculty offices. As a part of the expansion plan, 5000 sq. ft space has been furnished in Tejaswini building with latest infrastructure and networking facilities. The new office modules have been designed with a built up size of 300 sq. ft to 400 sq. ft with centralized air conditioning and failsafe supporting facilities at a reasonable cost for successfully setting up their ICT office units in capital city of Kerala.

Technopark was successful in admitting 12 new companies and generating employment for more than 250 people through its incubation programmes in the year 2007-08. About 23 companies have been functioning in the incubator facility with varied business in IT & ITES sectors. Unlike previous years, this year Technopark-TBI could admit business ventures from niche areas like Optical Holography, Bio Informatics, Embedded & Hardware Systems, and Medical Electronics, e-learning business portals and ERP business solutions. The companies were given expert mentoring and counseling before starting their start up ventures in the TTBI. It is a matter of delight that no companies functioning in the incubation were dropped out during the last year; which made up a success rate of 100%, with the capacity utilization of the installed facilities of 95%. This is really a creditable achievement in the country. As on March 31, 2008, TBIC and T-TBI together have incubated 62 start-up companies. Technopark is one of the Outreach Centres (T-TUC) of DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) for the selection and evaluation of genuine Innovators and Entrepreneurs in the Country. DSIR has recognised Technopark as their TUC during 2007 and in short span of time two of our Incubatees were sanctioned sizable TePP funding in 2007-08. Mr. Sanjay Vijaykumar ,CEO of TORQUE Pvt Ltd, an engineering college student start up and incubatee of T-TBI was sanctioned a TePP grant of Rs.8.00 lakhs for his innovation Mobile Crime and Accident Reporting Platform( M-CARP). Another student entrepreneur and incubate of TTBI Mr.Aaron Joseph George from Velozeta Engineering Solutions P Ltd also got TePP funding of Rs.12 lakhs for his innovation Six Stroke Engine. Another innovator Dr.P.T.Ajith Kumar, CEO of Light Logics Holography & Optics Pvt Ltd was sanctioned a TePP funding of Rs.14.50lakhs for his project Development and Optimization of a Holographic Pulsed Portrait Camera System. This seed funding helped these innovators to kick start their product development and commercialization activities. T-TUC has been maintaining a panel of technical experts called the Technology Angels from various parts of South India, who are willing to assist these innovators in need basis. So far, T-TUC is having about 35 Technology Angels who are specialized in areas of physics, automobile, mechanical engineering, biomedical, bioinformatics, chemical engineering, computer science, electrical and electronics engineering, cryogenic engineering, dentistry, energy management, entomology, geology, food science, marine technology, medical electronics, metallurgy, power electronics, oncology, ship technology and zoology.
