CALCULATION OF CHANNEL CAPICITY OF SINGLE MODE OPTICAL FIBER

Kishori Sharan Mathur Research Scholar, JJT University, Jhunjhunu 333001, Rajasthan, India kishorimathur@hotmail.com

Considering all wave fiber having attenuation of 3db/km from 800nm to1700nm wavelength window: c= or =c/ or = c/ At 800 nm, optical frequency is 375 THz At 1700nm, optical frequency is 176 THz Hence, =375-176= 200 THz--------------------------------------- (1) Hence, Theoretical bandwidth of single mode optical fiber is 200 THz Now, let us consider Shannons channel capacity formula having only Gaussian noise in the optical fiber communications link C= BW. (1+S/N)

Here C is the maximum Channel Capacity i.e. Maximum information transmission Capacity. BW is the bandwidth of the fiber channel which is 200 THz (Refer Equation 1), Let us assume S/N ratio is 15 db with forward Error Correction (FEC) SNR db=10 log (Signal Power/Noise Power) = 10 log S/N Hence, 10 log S/N = SNR db Hence, S/N = log1(SNRdb/10) = log1(15/10) = 31.6 Also, x = (log10x) (log102) = (log10x) /.3 Hence, (1+S/N) = (1+31.6) =
(32.6)

log10 32.6.3=5.04

Hence, C=200*5=1000 Terabits/second It may be noted that Shannon capacity is only theoretical max Capacity which can be achieved. It doesnt consider factors such as noise, signal degrdation, non linear effects in the systems Let us calculate number of analogue voice channels which a single mode fiber can support: 200*1012Hz z/ 4*103=50,000*106 Channels = 50,000 million channels For HDTV, 200*1012Hz/6*106 Hz / Channels =33 million channels
