(c) An experiment investigating gravitational forces uses solid lead spheres of mass
160 kg and diameter 30 cm. The density of lead is 11 300 kg m3.
(i) Show that the gravitational field strength that one of these lead spheres produces
at its surface is about 5 107 N kg1.

(ii) Student A says that this value of field strength for the lead sphere is so small
that it must be exerting a negligible gravitational force, even on the Earth itself.
Student B disagrees and says that this force will be more than 1000 N.
Explain which student is correct.

curve AB is part of the graph showing the variation of force F with the separation r of the
particles.
(a) (i) The relationship between force and separation obeys an inverse square law. With
detailed reference to the points A and B on the graph, explain what this means.

A Faraday torch has no batteries. Instead it uses a coil through which a magnet moves
when the torch is shaken. The induced current charges a 2.5 F capacitor which is connected
in series with the coil and a diode as shown in the diagram. Energy stored in the capacitor
is then used to produce the light.

of its travel. Tick the boxes in the final column for the rows that describe when
charging could occur.

A 10 cm copper rod PQ rests horizontally on two horizontal rails as shown in the diagram.
The separation of the rails can be varied. A uniform magnetic field acts vertically into the
page in the region ABCD. Electrical connections to the rails at X and Y deliver current to
PQ. This causes PQ to roll along the rails.

(a) (i) Name the rule or law that relates the direction of the current in PQ to the direction
in which it rolls.

(ii) PQ rolls towards X and Y. Mark a + sign at X or Y to show the polarity of the
connections.

(b) The two rails are moved closer together until they lie along AD and BC. When
the current in PQ is 5.0 A the horizontal force acting on it is 9.0 mN. Calculate the
magnetic flux density.

(c) The rail separation is now increased to its maximum value of 10 cm before being
gradually reduced to zero by sliding the rails together. The current is kept at 5.0 A and
the rails are moved symmetrically until they meet mid-way between AD and BC.
On the axes below draw a graph to show how the horizontal force acting on PQ
changes as the rail separation is reduced.
