Architects who design their own home are in for a treat: they have carte blanche to bring their most daring professional ideas to fruition. When deciding on the bathroom for his ocean home, Robert Mills knew he wanted to experience the new and create a bedroom and bathroom in one. Most bathrooms are the same, says Mills. The buildings we live in are at risk of being homogenised. Informed designers and clients are searching for more they want to be inspired. For Mills, run-of-the-mill solutions can limit the imagination: in this project, an original alternative to a standard basin vanity was a Japanese wheat-grinding bowl. The result? A pleasing mix of rustic stone juxtaposed with contemporary chrome tapware. The cool tones and lines of polished plaster walls and concrete f looring are softened by unexpected fabrics. A tactile rug lies underfoot, a neutral linen squab sits atop a narrow window seat, and the same linen is turned into privacy curtains over the bath, adding a note of decorative warmth. Colours mimic the oceanic surrounds soft greys with a hint of blue, and nudes the colour of bleached driftwood.

PRIMARY SChOOL
Just west of Victorias Yarra River lies a weatherboard cottage that recently underwent a bold makeover, courtesy of design firm Doherty Lynch. The owners, a retired couple undertaking their first renovation since downsizing from their large family home, wanted their kitchen to ref lect their personality and love of colour. It is quite a small kitchen so we wanted to create a bold graphic statement by using strong colour and a limited palette of other materials, says designer Mardi Doherty. Yellow was chosen for the back wall of cabinets and ref lects the couples sunny nature. They are a very relaxed couple! Set against the charcoal of the island bench below and the dark rangehood overhead, the colour positively pops. The yellow cabinetry also masks the refrigerator and extra storage. Custom-made shelving provides extra space for the owners many cookbooks and accessories. The brief was to create a simple, no-fuss kitchen. The client requested laminate, not due to cost but because she loved the colours and the softness of it compared to stone or 2-pac, states Doherty. Oversized circular handles were custom made for the cabinets, adding a contrasting graphic element to the surrounding blocks of colour.
