Mentoring Begins!
Connecting community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.

We believe that every child needs and deserves the Five Basics:

1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult 2. A safe place to learn and grow 3. A healthy start and healthy future 4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation 5. A chance to give back to peers and community.

CIS school-based programs are designed to provide students with at least one of these REAL basics.

The much anticipated 2012-2013 EastSide Charter School mentoring program began on Tuesday, October 1st. Students eagerly entered the school library to see their mentors for the first time this school year. Some students were meeting their mentor for the first time, while others embraced their mentors they have worked with for years. CIS Project Coordinator, Ashley Widdoes is happy to announce that to date 105 people have signed up to participate in this years mentoring program. This year, every 4th and 5th grade student will benefit from having a mentor. In addition, select 2nd, 3rd and middle school students have also been paired up with a mentor. This years mentors were recruited from Barclays, ING(Capital One), Ashland, Corporation Service Company and First and Central Presbyterian Church. Various community members and EastSide Charter School board members are also participating this year. Mentoring takes places on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 11-1. Mentors are scheduled for a 40 minute time slot during the same day/time every week. During their scheduled visit the mentors help their mentees with an academic assignment. There is also some time to have fun and play games together. The students truly love the one-onone attention the get from their mentors. It has become one of the highlights of their week!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Connecting community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.

ING Brings Financially Literacy to EastSide Charter School From October 15 - October 17 ING volunteers visited every th kindergarten5 grade classroom. The volunteers introduced themselves, describe their jobs at ING and read a book to the students. The lessons varied by grade. Students learned about money, spending and saving and the difference between needs and wants. It was obvious to see how much the students enjoyed the stories and lessons. All eyes were on the volunteers as they read aloud and asked questions. The students enthusiastically answered questions and shared in the discussion. At the end of the presentation every student was given a copy of the book. The students were so excited to get the book and couldnt wait to have a brand new book to read at home. Make a Difference Day At Barclays Communities In Schools would like to say an extra special thank you to Barclays for inviting all our middle school students to their Make A Difference Day At Barclays. Drop Everything and Decorate!

Connecting community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.

EastSide Charter School has adopted a new set of values this year. All the students are able to explain that SOAR stands for Safety First, Own Your Actions, Act Peacefully, and Respect For All. Throughout the school year teachers have been educating students how they can SOAR in the classroom and in life. CIS staff planned an exciting school wide activity to raise awareness and enthusiasm around the SOAR value: Safety first. CIS staff informed the teachers when the Drop Everything and Decorate bulletin board contest would take place but to the students, it was a great surprise. During their class time, students discussed ideas and planned for the bulletin board contest. At approximately 3pm on October 3rd, Dr. Browne came on the loud speaker and announced that it was time to Drop Everything and Decorate. Every class had only fifteen minutes to decorate their bulletin board. There was great excitement throughout the school building during this time. After the fifteen minutes passed, members from the Leadership Team walked through the halls and judged the bulletin boards. One representative from each class presented their board to the school leaders. All EastSide Charter School students are creative but we could only award three classes. Congratulations to Ms. Sheppards second grade class, Ms. Kennellys third grade class, and Ms. Davidsons fifth grade class. In addition to these classes that were awarded, CIS also provided a small prize to all the students that presented their bulletin board concept. We are all looking forward to the next school wide SOAR event!

Coasting, Flying High, and Soaring to Friday Celebrations!

CIS is promoting monthly school wide celebrations throughout the school year. Every Friday, students are eligible to take part in a fun event to celebrate their positive behavior. At the end of each month, CIS organizes an extra special treat for students to enjoy during these occasions. Those students that displayed positive behavior and had minimal redirections during the week were able to enjoy a Pizza Party on October 26th. Approximately two hundred seventy five deserving students enjoyed their pizza.
