From the Desk of the Principal:
Traffic:
Double parking continues to be a major problem during morning drop off and afternoon pickup. This is
illegal and I have had to address this with many parents over the past month. The police have addressed
this as well through ticketing and they will continue to do so. I see this problem happening most often at
the front door area and those who are doing this are causing a huge traffic jam and a very dangerous
situation for children. Do not double-park to drop off or pick up your children. Pull up to the next
available spot by the curb. A few more steps for safety, even in the rain, snow and cold, is the right thing
to do.
The teacher parking lot is not a drop off or pick up location.
ISAT
ISAT testing will begin on Monday, March 2nd through Thursday, March 5th. Students in third, fourth
and fifth grades will be tested in the morning and in the afternoon each day. We will be starting the
testing early in the morning and it will be very important that students be at school on time.
The subjects they are being tested on are things they are learning throughout the year as well as
previous years. Please let your students know, as I have, that this is important, but they are well
prepared for success.
Parent input forms for student placement:
On March 11th report cards will be going home. In the report card envelope there will be a letter and form
from me providing parents an opportunity to give input on your child’s placement for next year. This is
not mandatory, but it can be helpful. It is very important that you follow the directions on the form and
get the form back to us by the deadline, which will be March 19th. We do not take teacher requests.
Book Fair
The Franklin PTA is having the Spring Book Fair from March 10th through March 12th. This is a great
opportunity to shop for a variety of gifts and also get your child and yourself a special book for Spring
Break reading. There will be books available for children as well as adults. This year we have set up a
special time available for Kindergarten Parents on Tuesday during the lunch hour.
Parent Conferences:
On March 5th teachers will be sending notices home requesting parent conferences. Conferences will be
held on Thursday March 12th and Monday March 16th from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Winterfest
Thank you to the Franklin PTA, all of the parent volunteers, everyone who contributed and everyone who
attended Winterfest! It was a great success on many levels. Fundraising was outstanding, prizes were
abundant and we had a great turnout of families. I know a lot of work went into this event, but the result
of bringing the community together during a time when people usually stay inside makes it all worthwhile.

MARCH IS YOUTH ART MONTH
AND WE ARE CELEBRATING AT FRANKLIN SCHOOL!!
The entire week of March 9 – March 13, the PTA will be sponsoring Ellen Gradman, our “visiting
artist”. Ellen will be working with each class during their regularly scheduled art time. Ellen made
one of the Cool Globes featured downtown Chicago in the summer of 2007 and also one of the
chairs in Suite Home Chicago in 2001! Her globe just got back from Washington D. C. She taught art
for years while making art and now makes art full time…all day, every day!! (You can check out her
website: sparkyourart.com) She will be making books with the entire school. I’m really excited about
this whole school project!! Students will have the chance to meet a real artist and ask her questions
about her life and art!! To kick the week off, we will be having a Cultural Arts Presentation on
Monday, March 9th. It will take place in the LRC.
We would like to ask each student to please bring in a few items for collage purposes. Some ideas
for materials would be:
Maps
Cancelled stamps
Wrapping paper scraps
Old postcards
Doilies
Ticket stubs
Deck of cards
Old baseball cards
Scrapbooking materials
Brochures from vacations
Envelopes that have been sent through the mail
Old Museum admission tickets
Anything else you can think of!!

YOUTH ART MONTH
The following students will have their art featured at the library to help celebrate
Youth Art Month:
Their art is located in the showcase upstairs. The art displayed is from students all over
Park Ridge. Only four students have been chosen from Franklin School!!! Great job,
kids!!!!

Another great way to have some extra fun with math is to attend the Math Mania 2009 event on
Saturday, April 4th.
Math club members and prospective members are all welcome and encouraged to attend.

For current and prospective Franklin Math Club members – 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are invited to
participate in District 64’s:
Math Mania 2009
Date: Saturday, April 4
Time: 9:00-11:00 for 2nd and 3rd Grades
12:30-2:30 for 4th and 5th Grades
Place: Washington School Gym
Math Mania 2009 is sponsored by a grant from the Elementary learning Foundation (ELF). Teams
from all five District 64 Elementary Schools will compete with one another in the Washington School
Gym. Students will be separated by grade and are asked to wear a white shirt to help us organize
participants by school.
Students will take two written math contests (an individual contest and a team contest with teams of
four) for about 30 minutes. The remaining 90 minutes will be spent playing various games. We have
a limited number of each game so we ask that you submit a list of your child’s top three games (in
preference order). We will do our best to accommodate your student’s preferences, subject to
availability and interest. Ribbons will be awarded for each event (written contests and games).
Games include the following (please search the web for details if these games if you are unfamiliar
with them):
• Connect 4 (all grades)
• SET (all grades)
• Sudoku (age appropriate, all grades)
• Word Scrambles (2nd grade only)
• Tangram Puzzles (2nd grade only)
• 24 Game (3rd, 4th, 5th grades only)
• Blokus (3rd, 4th, 5th grades only)
• Pentago (3rd, 4th 5th grades only)
• Rummikub (3rd, 4th 5 grades only)
• Othello (3rd, 4th, 5th grades only)
• Taboo (with “appropriate words” only. Taboo helps with definitions, relationships, and constraints,
all important math skills! – 4th and 5th only)
While this is a drop-off event, we do need parent volunteers to helpfacilitate the test-taking, game
playing, and overall safety of the students. Please consider donating your time to this worthwhile
even. Sorry, but we ask that you keep all younger siblings at home.

following information by March 17th
1. Students Name (full name)
2. Top three games (in preference order) your student would like to play. Note grade levels on
he game list. If your student is indifferent, please state “No Preference”
3. If you would like to be a parent helper, please list your name and phone number.
Space is limited, so please don’t wait to register. Our goal is to accommodate as many students from
all five schools as possible.
DIBELS are a series of short tests given to screen and monitor student progress in learning the
necessary skills to become successful readers. All DIBELS measures are timed in order to help students
develop the automaticity of basic reading skills, so they can become more focused on understanding what they
are reading. Students are given different assessments based on their developmental reading levels. These
include the following:
Letter Naming - Kindergarten and first grade students are given a page with letters and asked to name each
one. This test can help us determine which students are likely to struggle and which will be successful readers in
the future.
Initial Sounds - By the middle of kindergarten, children should be able to say or recognize the beginning
sounds in words automatically. Students are given a page with four pictures. They are asked to find the picture
that starts with a particular sound or to say the beginning or initial sound in a word.
Phoneme Segmentation - This is a measure of children’s awareness of the many sounds that make up words
we speak. It is given to kindergarten and first grade students and is a skill that should be mastered by the end of
kindergarten. The child is told a word like “cat” and asked to say all of the sounds in the word. There are three
sounds in “cat.”
Nonsense Words - The ability to blend sounds represented by letters to make words is an important skill in
learning to read. This skill helps children in kindergarten, first and second grades to use their knowledge of the
relationship between letters and sounds to read unfamiliar words. Children are shown a page of make-believe
words, like “tob” or “miv,” and asked to read them by saying the individual sound of each letter in the word or
the whole word itself.
Oral Reading - This is a measure of how fluently and accurately children can read passages written at their
grade level. This test is given to students in first through fifth grade. Children are given three passages and
asked to read each one aloud for one minute. Children who read accurately and fluently are better able to
understand what they read.
Here are some ways that you can support your child’s reading development at home…
• Practice the sounds of the English language
• Help your child take spoken and written words apart and put them together
• Point out the letters and letter-sound relationships that your child is learning wherever you see them
• Listen to your child read words and books on a regular basis
• Reread familiar books for practice and developing expression
• Build reading accuracy by pointing out words your child reads incorrectly
• Build reading comprehension by asking questions about characters, sequence of events, and what
occurred in the passage or book

Registration begins Monday, March 2!!!

Every year the lunch staff/before school care personnel attends a Civil Behavior presentation given
by our district social workers. This time we had Laura Bolech from Carpenter and Cathy Reardon
from Roosevelt who introduced a variety of tools and information to our staff to use during
lunchtime.
Some of the topics were:
• Bullying
• Teasing
• Avoid conflict
• Problem identification
The Civil Behavior presentation was very informative and gave us better ideas on how to serve our
children at lunchtime and before school care.

District 64!! Captures 2009 Bright Red Apple Award for Educational Excellence
Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 is one of only 81 Illinois school districts to earn the 2009
Bright Red Apple Award for educational excellence from SchoolSearch, an independent
research and consulting firm. It is the 15th year that District 64 has been selected.
Only 9% of Illinois school districts earned the award this year. All school districts in Illinois –
a total of 868 – were considered using standard, objective data reported on the 2008 Illinois
State Report Cards.
“The fact that District 64 has earned this award for 15 years underscores the strong,
unwavering commitment of this community to high quality education. We hope local
residents share our pride in this unusual achievement, which recognizes their deep support for
schools,” Superintendent Sally Pryor added.
The honor is based on five essential factors: academic performance, pupil/teacher ratio,
expenditure per pupil, educational level of teachers, and average teacher salary. “District 64 is
strong in all five family-favored areas,” according to SchoolSearch.

The Gift Basket Committee would like to send out a BIG thank you to all the parents,
students, and teachers who generously donated to the Winterfest
silent auction this year. The donations were fantastic and the baskets looked
incredible!! Many families went above & beyond by donating items for other baskets,
as well as their child’s. With your help, the baskets generated almost $2700 for our
school. This is up almost $500 from last year! WOW!!
We would also like to thank the Dupke family (PARTY TIME PALACE) and the Vacala
family (AmeriSciences Family Wellness) for their generous individual contributions to
the auction. Of course, thanks go to Pasquesi Home & Garden Center for allowing us
to wrap the baskets at their beautiful Lake Bluff location.
Finally, we would like to thank Jean Lemke, Laura Hauser, Christy Depkon,
Babs Swanson, and Linda Berleth for their gift of time and help towards the Gift basket
committee. Without everyone’s help, this success wouldn’t have been possible! We
look forward to seeing you next year at Winterfest.
