Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is a city with a population of almost 4 million, situated at the northern tip of Port
Phillip Bay in the State of Victoria. From its inception as a site for a village in 1835, it has
grown through the Gold Rush which started in the 1850s which accelerated its growth on the
proceeds of gold, the home of Australia's first Parliament after Federation in 1901 to become
the second largest Australian city and a major port and centre of industry in its own right.

Melbourne is a city that retains many beautiful Heritage listed buildings, extensive bayside
beaches, many cafe's and restaurants that have contribute to its laid back lifestyle. With its
excellent public transport and tram network it is easy to get around and easily navigable for
visitors who aren't afraid to ask for directions from Melbourne residents who are friendly,
hospitable and proud of their city.

There are many things on offer in "marvelous Melbourne", the city acknowledged as the
Shopping Capital of Australia. Visitors often fall prey to the fame accorded to the other large
city north of the Murray River and fail to allocate enough time to their stay in Melbourne.
The truth is - there is enough to keep one occupied for six weeks or more, all within a days
drive of the centre of town!
