PREKNOWLEDGE

1. Know to use basic mathematical operations. 2. Know to perform mathematical operations involving fractions 3. Know to use basic units of measurement

OBJECTIVES Pupils will be able to: 1. compare quantities using ratios. 2. write ratios in the simplest form. 3. appreciate the use of ratio in everyday life.

SET INDUCTION

-Teacher ask students to draw a rectangle using the following dimensions: Length : 60cm by Width: 30cm. -Teacher then asks students to divide the rectangular strip into five equal parts. - Teacher asks students to colour three parts red and two parts blue. - Teacher explain to students that the two coloured strips can be compared using a ratio - Teacher show how a ratio is written : a:b - Teacher instructs students to compare the total number of red strips : the total number of blue strips and write it as a ratio. - Teacher repeats the same process with other rectangular strips.

SECTION 1 CONTENT Concept of a ratio is a comparison between quantities and can be written as a:b

Teaching points: 1. Ratio is a comparison between two or more quantities. 2. Ratio can be written as a:b or even a:b:c.

METHOD TEACHER STRATEGY Guided discussion STUDENT ACTIVITY Students explain their own definition of the term ratio. Students recognise that a ratio can be written as a:b or a:b:c. RESOURCES White board Rectangular strips Markers/Colour pencils
