Governors Martinez and Sandoval followed up on his remarks with their own discussion of their policies, ranging from education to increasing access to capital for small businesses, which are improving opportunities and the quality of life for their states residents. affordable. Doug Holtz-Eakin noted that economic growth is necessary for financial security because growth will help to alleviate the current ills of high unemployment. Both Congressman Labrador and Doug HoltzEakin commended Governor Fortuos efforts to implement tax reform and put Puerto Rico back on track for economic growth. Massey Villarreal, who started his business with one employee and has grown his business to 240 employees provided unique insight into the Latino community and the impediments that it faces as a non-traditional banking and entrepreneurial community that requires improved financial literacy. He highlighted that under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act his employee healthcare costs will

double. The panel concluded with all panelists agreeing that we must rst restore the condence of investors and business owners to spur growth to ensure the nancial security of current and future generations.

Senator Marco Rubio opened the evening reception with poignant remarks on topics including his experience with the American Dream, the entrepreneurial spirit of the Hispanic community, and the benefits of the American free enterprise system. He outlined the need for limited government that sets out predictable rules. He concluded by highlighting the need for real reform of our immigration system and that we should not be afraid to address this important issue.

THERES NO COMMUNITY IN AMERICA THAT UNDERSTANDS THE FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM BETTER THAN THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY.

Like the rest of the country, were (the Hispanic Community) worried about jobs and the economy. Thats the most important issue.

The number one issue among Hispanic voters this will be a big surprise to you is the economy, and jobs, and opportunity," he said. "A second one is, 'Who shares my values?' A third one is, 'Who is going to help me deal with my child trapped in a failing school?' Those are the issues that matter.
Jeb Bush, Former Florida Governor

Official recognition of our Hispanic Heritage began in 1968, when President Lyndon Johnson established Hispanic Heritage Week. Ronald Reagan, saw the importance of honoring the many contributions that Hispanic men and women have made to American history, signed a bill into law that expanded that week to a full month to cover the 30 days between September 15 and October 15. The day of September 15 is significant for the Hispanic community because it is the anniversary of independence for many Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and 18, respectively.
(HispanicHeritageMonth.gov/About hosted by the Library of Congress).

HLN will have two events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. HLN will partner with HispanicVote.com to increase voter registration among the Hispanic community on Tuesday, September 25th during National Voter Registration Day. HLN will also co-host a Debate Watch Party in Denver, Colorado on October 3rd for the first Presidential Debate. For more information please visit our website. (hispanicleadershipnetwork.org)
