h of OCTOBER 2010. Question 1 I) Draw the equivalent circuit of a three-phase induction motor and identify its components. II) A 3 phase Y connected 400V, 25hp 50Hz, 4pole induction motor has following constants. Stator resistance 0.5 Ohm Rotor resistance 0.2 Ohm Stator reactance 0.6 Ohm Magnetizing reactance 14.75 Ohm Friction and windage losses 265W. At slip 2%, and when the motor is running at rated voltage and frequency, calculate, a) The speed d) Output torque b) Stator current e) Output power c) Power factor f) Efficiency Question 2 I) a) Draw the power flow diagram of a 3-phase induction motor. Briefly explain each term given in the diagram. b) Identify the losses in above and on which factors each of these losses depend on. II) A 400V, 3 phase, 6pole, 50HZ, induction motor has an efficiency of 0.9 when delivering an output of 37kW. At this load, the stator copper loss and rotor copper loss each equals the iron loss. And the mechanical losses are 1/3 of the no-load loss. Calculate, a) Iron loss. b) Mechanical loss. c) Air gap power at this load. d) Electrical power developed. e) Electrical torque. c) Slip at this load. Question 3 I) Explain how the speed of DC motors can be controlled by the following methods. a) Field control b) Armature resistance control c) Armature voltage control

Note : You should obtain equations for shunt (or separately excited) and series motors starting from the basics. Use curve for each type of motor and explain how speed varies with varying the parameters given in a, b, c. State and briefly explain methods used in practice to achieve speed control, by a,b,c. e.g : tapped field windings for series motors armature resistance control. II) A 100V shunt DC motor has an armature resistance of 0.4and a field resistance ofWhen driving at 1200 rpm the armaturedraws 25A. Keeping the torque constant, it is desired to raise the speed from, 1200 rpm to 1600 rpm. What resistance should be inserted in the field circuit. Assume the magnetization curve to be linear. Question 4 I) State and explain starting methods of DC motors. II) A DC shunt generator having a combined armature and field resistance of 0.5 Ohm is running at 1200 rpm and delivering 6 kW, at a terminal voltage of 230V. If the speed is raised to 1500rpm find the new current and terminal voltage when the load is adjusted to 8kW. Assume the magnetizing characteristic is linear within the operating range.
