2. Nicholas Schroeder-2(Nicholas Schroeder-1) was born on 03 Nov 1773 in St. Nicholas Church,
Hallaschlag, Germany[1]. He married Gertrude Breuer.
Generation 3
Nicholas was living with his son, Nicholas in the Town of Ave in the 1860 Census. His wife was not
alive.

The Schroeder family history began when the ship "The Harvest" left Antwerp, Belgium, captained by
Henry Spalding, carrying a full load of passengers originally from Prussia and arrived in New York on
August 3, 1842. Among those aboard were our ancestors Nicholas and Anna Schroeder and their
children Nicholas Jr., Peter, Margaret and Barbara, along with another son Matthew and his wife
Sally with their daughter Anna. This family moved up the Hudson River to Albany and then westward
on the Erie Canal to Utica. Here they stayed for a time and then eventually settled in Ava, New York.
Found in the 1855 Census in the town of Ava - owned 75 acres of land. 25 improved and 50
unimproved. Cash value $900 of farm. Plowed 8 acres. Harvested 150 bushels of potatoes. Has 2
cows, 1 horse and 1 pig. Sold 200 lbs. of butter. The 1855 Census said he had lived here for 12
years. Therefore, arriving from Germany in 1843. Name in that census - Martin Shrater.
In the 1860 Town of Ava Census, he was listed as Martin Schreider. Pge 17.
German name Mathai. 1865 Lewis County Census says Mathew has been married only once, is a
naturalized citizen and owns land.
Matthew lived with his daughter, Mary in Deerfield in the 1880 census.

John was born in West Leyden. He was one of a family of 21 children. He came to
Chadwicks with his family at the age of 14. He was employed by the Willowvale
Bleachery Co., for 51 years. For many years, he was foreman, retiring January 1,
1933. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padau Church, Chadwicks and its Holy
Name Society. He was a member of the Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus and a
life honorary member of Utica Council 189; a life member of the Order of the
Alhambra; a live member of Santa Fe Caravan, No. 40, Utica.

Notes for Matthew Uertz:
Death certificate #27631. Died at the home of his brother, Jacob Uertz in
Willowvale after a four day illness. Matthew spent all his life in Willowvale, where
for 54 years he worked at the Utica-Willowvale Bleachery Company. he was a
member of St. Anthony of Padua Church.

Jacob moved to Chadwicks in 1884. He had been employed by the Willowvale
Bleachery until a year ago when he became ill. He was a member of St. Anthony of
Padua Church and it's Holy Name Society. He did not have any children. The 1910
Census for New Hartford said he was a laborer at the Bleachery.

and later to Chadwicks, where she has lived for 69 years. She and her husband
owned and operated the Chadwicks Hotel. They retired from business in 1913.
She was a member of St. George's Episcopal
Church and its Women's Auxiliary.

of the Church of the Annunciation and of the Holy Name Society.

9. Nicholas Schrater-5(Matthew Schroeder-4, Nicholas Schroeder-3, Nicholas Schroeder-2, Nicholas
Schroeder-1) was born on Abt. 1843 in Oneida County, NY[6, 21]. He died on 1889[2]. He married Mary
Jane Hayes Schrater on 06 Apr 1869 in Lee Center, New York, daughter of Richard Hayes and
Florinda Hayes. She was born on 1846 in Lee Center, NY[2, 21]. She died on 16 Sep 1915[2]. He
married Laura Perry on 1866.
Notes for Nicholas Schrater:
Nicholas served in the Union Army in the Civil War in Company F, 2nd Regiment, New York Heavy
Artillery. She signed his surname Schrader when he enlisted but when he was discharged he signed
it Schrater which he continued to use in his post war live. His army records indicated he moved to
Boise, Idaho in 1885 and died there. In the 1880 Census, he had living in his household Issac Rivers
and Peter Young.

Nicholas Schroeder-1) was born on 30 Aug 1847 in Ava, NY[24, 25]. She died on Mar 1871 in West
Leyden, Lewis Co., NY[26]. She married John Jacob Schmidt on Abt. 1864 in Utica, NY ??, son of
John Philip Schmidt and Walburga (Mary) Fischer Schmidt. He was born on 18 Sep 1841 in
Wuerttemberg, Germany. He died on 06 Aug 1891 in Wiley Street (12), Utica, NY[19].
Notes for Catherine Schroeder Schmidt:
Catherine's Godparents were Francis Sentiff and Anna Caterina Hoffmann.
Catherine was found in 1865 Town of Lewis Census. Her family was not found in the 1850 Lewis
Co. or Ava census. The1860 census in Lewis Co. was agriculture and property owners only.
Catherine died at a very young age, only 24 years old. This is a mystery. I have searched for her
grave, but only suspect that she was buried in West Leyden, NY without a marker.
Civil War records - John J. Schmidt age 21 years - Enlisted in Company C 14th NY Infantry of
the Civil War July 8, 1862 at Utica. Mustered in as a private same date to serve 3 years.
Transferred June
24, 1863 to Co. F 44th infantry. Also born as John F. Sohmidt. Discharged July 15, 1863. Fought
July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg, Little Round Top facing Devil's Run. In 1880 Lived at 252 Whitesboro St.,
Utica, NY. He was a carpenter. Personal description from the Adjutant General's Office - Born in
Germany, age 21, occupation, farmer; eyes, dark; hair, dark; complexion, dark; height 5 ft 7 in. Also
listed on the rolls as John J. Smith. From the Surgeon General's Office - John J. Schmidt was
admitted to an Army hospital in Potomac Crux, VA. April 27, 1863 with "Typhoid Fever".
John was found in the 1865, 1870, and 1875 in the Town of Lewis. By 1875 John was married to
Philomena and had two more children. His mother was living with him at that time. The census
listed said his mother's name as Mary. His occupation in 1875 was growing potatoes. In 1880,

John and family were living in Utica at 252 Whitesboro St., Utica, NY in 1880 Utica Census ward 6.
The census said he was naturalized.
He was a member of the German Rifles and served as the shooting master.
For many years Mary J. Sifer was known to many Utica women as an exceptionally
fine dressmaker. She was born in West Leyden, and lived on a farm there and
attended West Leyden School until her family came to Utica to live. Here she
attended St. Joseph's parochial school. As a young woman she was employed as a
children's nurse in the Park Ave home of George L. Roberts, a nephew of Ellis H.
Roberts, then U.S. Treasurer. She traveled considerable with the Roberts family,
spending summers in the Catskills. Then she went to Kansas City, MO where she
worked as a dressmaker for three years, returning to marry young George Sifer,
who had a farm on Mohawk Hill, near West Leyden. They came to Utica after a time
and lived on City Street, Sunset Ave. and also in Maynard, before taking up their
residence on North Genesee St.
Mary loved to trim the Christmas tree. Her and her son-in-law spent two weeks
before Christmas trimming the tree and setting up a village under the tree, They
made a train station, a church and several little houses. George set up the train
and Mary made clothes for the small people and made curtains for the windows.
This tree took up their living room. The public was invited to come in and look at
this. They would keep the tree up for two weeks after Christmas just for friends
and neighbors to enjoy. Before Christmas, sheets were hung so the children in the
house could not see the tree until Christmas morning.

Maria Magdalena's Godparents were Hubertus Schroeder and Marie Magdalena
Finster according to St. Michael's Church records.
I believe she died young. The 1870 Lewis Co. Census listed her as Lena. She
was not in 1875 Town of Lewis Census or 1880 Utica Census.

Rome Hospital, Rome, NY[19, 49].

Joseph Lee's Godparents were Joseph Schmidt and Maria Schroeder.
Joseph was listed under Joseph Smith in the 1900 Utica Census. He was still
married to Bertha at this time.
Joseph was a landscape grader by trade. His first grading job was at the House of
Good Shephard in Utica, NY. He later engaged in farming in the Town of Rome.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

NY[27]. He married Elisabeth Agnes Schliker Schrader on 09 Feb 1875 in Utica, NY.

Herbert was educated in Utica schools and was a plumber by trade. The 1910
Census said he lived on Columbia Street in the 3rd ward and was a plumber.

Schroeder-1)[51] was born on 17 Dec 1850 in Ava, Oneida Co, NY[6, 19]. He died on 28 Jul 1922 in
1695 Lincoln Ave., Utica, NY[19]. He married Anna Shoemaker Schrader on 05 Oct 1885 in Utica,
NY. She was born on 12 Jan 1860 in Prussia, Germany[2, 19]. She died on 11 Jul 1912 in 689 Lincoln
Ave. Utica, NY[19]. He married Julia Monahan Schrader on 1876. She died on Bef. 1903. He
married Julia Monahan Schrader in ??. She died on Bef. 1903.

Obituary states he had had a stroke 3 years ago and never fully recovered. Lived at 1695 Lincoln
Ave, Utica, NY when he died. Member of St. Joseph's Church and the Carpenter's Union. Children

lived in Utica in 1922. Found in 1910 Utica Census 11th Ward. Lived at 689 Lincoln Ave., Utica in
1910.

William came to Utica at about five years of age. He learned the trade of a bake4r
and was employed by George Harris who conducted a bakery on Oneida Square.
He later moved to Gloversville. He returned to Utica and was employed by the
Standard Harrow Works. He then went back to work for George Harris. He was a
member of St. Joseph's church. He died of consumption. Never married.
