GENERAL LIFTING PROCEDURE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS LOADING & UNLOADING OF MATERIALS / EQUIPEMENTS

1.0

GENERAL This procedure covers the minimum requirement for The General Lifting Procedure It is the responsibility of all concerned to ensure that the lifting procedure is carried out as outlined below.

2.0

LIFTING PROCEDURE 2.1 In order to identify the mandatory requirement for the safe utilisation of the lifting procedure, the following steps should be followed: a) A full survey of the equipment to be moved / lifted / raised / lowered should be carried out : b) Weight of the equipment Centre load of the equipment Size of the equipment Lifting lugs, if any

A full survey of the lifting equipment / lifting machines, appliances and tackles to be used in the lift: Valid test certificates (approved) Capacity of the lifting machines Capacity of the lifting tackles Radius of the lift Stabilisation of the surrounding area / ground conditions where the lifting machines will be positioned In case of lowering the load, check the height and ensure that the crane boom is adequate for this lift A rigging plan shall be prepared for heavy lift by QA engineer / rigging supervisor prior to commencing the rigging works. Safety officer / rigging supervisor shall ensure, lifting work is carried out as per the approved rigging plan.

c)

A general check up for all personnel involved in supervising and operating the equipment: All necessary and approved certificates of competence for Crane Operator and rigger to make sure that all concerned are familiar with the type and nature of the lift. Ensure that the riggers and the crane operator are familiarised with the method of signalling to be used. Only experienced and competent person shall be employed. Risk

assessment shall be done prior to commencement of the heavy lift activities. d) e) 2.2 At no circumstances, attempt is to be made which exceed the safe working load of the crane. A full survey shall be done on the areas covered by lifting activities such as overhead power lines, buried services and other obstructions.

After all precautionary measures being taken, the lifting crane will be positioned in the right place and measurements will be taken physically to ensure that the calculated radius is fixed: a) Before commencing any lifting operations, all outriggers must be in fully extended condition. b) The right slings, chains, lugs and shackles are used, which have current colour code. c) Before lifting the load, check the area around the load to be lifted is clean and ensure that there are no attachments to the crane boom and cradle bar. d) Lift the load few inches above the ground, stop and re-check the load balance and function of the crane hoist brakes. e) The load shall be lifted slowly, with great care and no further extension of boom during lifting. f) Swing the boom to reach the right location for the load.

g) Lower the load into its new destination and make sure that it is safe before removing the lifting cables / shackles. 3.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
a)

No lifts will be done when the wind speed is more than 10 Km/s. If anything extra-ordinary occurs during the lifting operation, stop the lifting operation and check whether it is safe to continue the operation or not. Only one man to give the signals to control the whole operation, unless another is required to relay the signals. All personnel involved should wear the required PPE. Warning tape should be installed all around the area to be used during the lifting operation, so as to prevent unauthorised entry.
