Humble ISD Seeking AVID Tutors

Humble ISD is looking for successful local high school and college students who would
like to tutor in the AVID program for the 2008-09 school year. This program is funded
through the High School Allotment funds given to each district to support high school
completion as well as college readiness initiatives and programs. The schools
participating in AVID this year are Atascocita High School, Humble High School,
Kingwood Park High School, Kingwood High School, Atascocita Middle School, Ross
Sterling Middle School, Humble Middle School, Kingwood Middle School, Creekwood
Middle, Timberwood Middle and Riverwood Middle School. Applicants must be strong
in the areas of math, science and English; Pre-AP and AP course experience is
recommended.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program designed to prepare

students who have a willingness to learn and work hard toward four-year college
eligibility. These students are capable of completing rigorous curricula, but are falling
short of their innate potential. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging
courses and puts them on the college track. AVID students are typically first-time college
attendees and graduates in their families. Students in the seventh through eleventh grades
in HISD are enrolled in AVID.

AVID students are required to enroll in a school’s advanced level classes and attend an
academic elective class—called AVID—taught within the school day by a trained AVID
teacher. The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial
support, and motivational and college prep activities. The AVID curriculum is based on
writing as a tool of learning, the inquiry method, collaborative grouping, and academic
reading.

Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID elective class where they facilitate student
success in advanced classes. Each secondary school has multiple AVID classes in which
tutors are needed two days each week to work with small groups of students. University
and college students are highly desirable as tutors because they serve as college role
models for the AVID students. All tutors receive formal training in AVID methodologies
and good tutoring procedures. Tutors are needed for a Tuesday/Thursday or
Monday/Wednesday schedule for a minimum of two hours per day. Beginning tutors are
paid $10 per hour for tutoring within the school day and for their required 16 hours of
tutor training.

There is a strong need for many tutors for the 2008-2009 school year at a variety of
Humble ISD schools. If you are interested in becoming an AVID tutor, go to the Humble
ISD website, http://www.humble.k12.tx.us; click on employment; go to AVID Program
