Celebrities, Living Rooms, and Oscar

SARA JACOBSON On a Thursday evening, before the sun has set, before the clubs have opened, I find myself looking at three seemingly unrelated objects: my favorite celebrity couple, a living room, and a guy named Oscar. Im at LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. From October 1, 2011 - March 25, 2012, LACMA and many museums in California are participating in Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945 - 1980. LACMA has holds the California Design, 1930 1965 Living in a Modern World exhibit. With more than 300 objectsfurniture, ceramics, metalwork, fashion and textiles, and industrial and graphic designthe exhibition examines the states role in shaping the material culture of the entire country Within this exhibition, located in the Resnick Pavilion, Barbie and Ken, my favorite couple, reside. The original Barbie doll, from 1959 appears next to her beau Ken. This Ken from 1961 looks vastly different from the buff, tan Ken that children around

the world currently play with. These iconic symbols of childhood, fashion, and California were kindly donated to the museum by Mattel, headquartered in El Segundo. Next to the couple is Barbies original 1962 dream house. This is far different from the two story, multi-roomed, Barbie dream house with a lamp that lit up, I grew up with. This dream house is a one roomed, dorm looking box with yellow painted walls. On the TV, which itself is a piece of furniture, is Barbies face. Atop the TV is a portrait of Ken. A party dress hangs in the closet, and paper pillows decorate the cardboard couches. Adjacent to this miniature dream house, is a life-size living room. This living room isnt one from an IKEA catalog, though much of furniture and decorations probably inspired IKEA furniture. No, this living room is the actual one from the Eames house, Case Study house number 8, located in Pacific Palisades. The Eames house was built as part of the program sponsored by Art & Architecture magazine from 1945 to 1966 called Designs for Post-War Living. After World War II, there was a population boom as soldiers returned home from war, and families were started. This created a need for inexpensive, efficient modern homes. Thus, famous architects

NOVEMBER 2011 \ FRIDAY

of the day were contracted to create model homes around Los Angeles. These houses were to be designed for a specific type of family, and used prefabricated, standardized parts. One of the most famous is the Eames house, built for a married couple both occupied professionally with mechanical experiment and graphic presentation...the house must make no insistent demands for itself, but rather aid as the background for life in work (Case Study Design Brief). Both the interior and exterior designs of the Eames house emphasizes space, light, and flexibility. The interior finishes are surprisingly simple and utilitarian. Large open spaces do not prescribe certain uses, but are effectively multipurpose rooms (National Register of Historic Places.) Charles and Bernice Ray Eames were a married couple who not only designed the eighth case study house, but were also famous for their furniture. They applied the technique of mass production, perfected during the war, to their furniture manufacturing. Charless design philosophy included developing designs that could be manufactured economically, sold cheaply, and that were as useful as possible, without attempts to cater to an assumed public taste. In other words, if it is well designed, the public will want it (NPS). The Eamess lived in their case study house until their deaths. The interior decorations remain as they did when Charles and Ray inhabited the residence. They filled the home with their own furniture designs, as well as souvenirs from their travels. For the LACMA Living in a Modern World exhibit, the actual Eames living room has been transported to the museum premises. In addition to the recreation of their living room, the exhibit also features many of their famous furniture designs, such as the elephant chair and a storage unit whose replica sells for $3,800 online. From where he is located, he can look at the Barbie and see the Eames living room, yet he attracts his own attention. He didnt get his name when he was born, and no one is really sure how he acquired his name, though it has been rumored that an executive producer thought he looked like her uncle, and thus he became known by her uncles name, Oscar. To have this 13 1/2 inch man on a mantle is many directors, producers, and actors dream. Cedric Gibbons, an art director for MGM, designed him, and George Stanly sculpted him as a knight holding a crusaders sword. Oscar stands on a reel of film with five spokes, signifying the five original branches of the Academy: actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers. The original Oscar, given out in 1929, was made of gold plated solid bronze. During World War II, due to the metal shortage, the Oscars were made of painted plaster. Current Oscars are made of britannia metal, plated in copper, nickel silver, and then 24-karat gold. The title of the overall LACMA exhibit is ironic for someone who is under 30 years old. Living in a Modern World. Nowhere is there an iPod, computer, or even a cell phone. It isnt what I define as modern, yet at its time, the modern world was evolving. Adults who had matured during the depression and

had gone to war were returning to a new start, full of opportunity. The American dream of owning a home was realized, and the nuclear home term was coined. After a period of rationing metal and goods, creative entrepreneurs had to develop new ways of doing things. With all of this, great strides were made in creating the America we know today.

LACMA is free to LA County residents Monday - Friday after 5:00 pm, except Wednesday The second Tuesday of every month is free admission for all patrons. 5905 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90036 323 857-6000

THE ARTS OF FASHION SETTING YOU APART

BY ELIZABETH CAWLEY With job competition especially high, resumes need to have extras make them stand out from the rest. One thing that students should consider getting involved with is the Arts of Fashion Foundation (AoF Foundation). This program offers multiple chances to participate, on an international level; including student competitions, educational programs, and professional series. The organizations mission is to link both academics and professionals alike and is dedicated in fostering international cultural exchange through the creation of a variety of educational events meant to facilitate critical thinking among artists, designers, scholars, and students. The primary focus of the foundation is the continuous support of creativity and design in fashion and the arts linked to it. Showing participation in a broader sense of fashion may help set you apart from all your peers when it comes to the resume and interview process. Another main function of the AoF Foundation is to contribute to a solution of an integral issue of the fashion industry. The organization feels that the current challenge of the fashion industry is the lack of proper copyright laws for fashion design. They have also been an advocate for the Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act (IDPPPA). The IDPPPA would require designers to create new concepts and hopefully eliminate copycats and piracy. Nathalie Doucet, the Arts of Fashion Foundations President, states in an interview that, when the IDPPPA passes, the United States could ride the crest of a new revolutionary fashion, fueled by the creative potential of their young designers. This will give the U.S. fashion industry a true future.

Elizabeth Barbaro Involvement with this organization would show that you believe in this issue and you want to create your own original designs as well. This would be a great opportunity for students to get involved with preserving the future of their fashion career and the fashion industry. Advocating for the Act is as simple as writing to your state Senator. As mentioned, the AoF Foundation holds annual student design competitions. Students should consider joining this annual competition to gain experience, exposure, and recognition. It would be a unique and a great opportunity to compete with 96 schools from 32 countries. For the 2011 competition, the theme was Tension. For this competition, students had to create a collection of three outfits along with illustrations, flats, swatches, visual and written concept, and a resume. There is a limit of 500 applicants, yet 330 students applied and only 65 were chosen to move past round one. For

the next level of competition, students had to develop at least 2 new outfits that would be their final project. The designs were also on display for two days at the San Francisco Art Institute. The exhibition was open and free to the public with the awards ceremony at the end of the final night. This competition would be a great way to build a portfolio and a resume, even if you do not get past the first round, you still have your original design collection. Another aspect of the competition is that twelve students were selected from applicants to participate in a four week study abroad session in Paris called Masterclass. During this session, students were able to work with cutting edge fashion designers including Christine Phung and Lucille Puton. The students worked with haute couture and visited local fashion exhibitions. While in the program, students were asked to design a menswear garment that was innovative and functional. The twist was that students were required to create a jacket from second-hand trousers or a shirt. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that all fashion design students should try getting involved with.

began to purchase cosmetics to complement seasonal changes leading to the beginning of combining fashion with cosmetics. Advances in chemistry in the twentieth century also lead to the transformation on makeup not only a science but also an art. Today cosmetics manufacturers continue to invest in scientific research to modify and perfect the science and art of cosmetics and beauty. The term of makeup artist began in the twentieth century and till this day it is fairly new and mystifying. Many makeup artists have reached a high degree of fame in their own right. Laura Mercier, Serge Lutens, Dick Page, Bobbi Brown and Pat McGrath have all used unique techniques from theater and film to expand their personal style and art in cosmetics. Cosmetics today is also pushing new boundaries by not only using skincare and makeup to form artworks but also including feathers, crystals, and other special effects to create new and unique makeup looks in fashion, television, film and theater. The use of makeup today seems to be pushing the boundaries in every possible way. Makeup in fashion shows used more and more to complement and further enhance the vision of designers. Makeup in magazines and advertisements is used to give consumers an idea of what society sees as beauty and its form of attainability. And finally makeup in film and theater is used to enhance a characters performance and presentation. Cosmetics are used today to serve many purposes but their use in society has without a doubt become a form of art in fashion and beauty.

THE NEWART OF MAKEUP

Christian Dior Couture Spring Summer 2007 BY PRISCILLA AMBRIZ Fashion shows, films, television shows, and theater are all projecting a new form or art. Makeup is one of the newest forms of art used to evoke a theme or concept. Primarily in fashion, no one could have guessed how popular cosmetics would have become or how important makeup artist would be in the production of fashion shows, fashion photography and all other forms of fashion events. Cosmetics has grown from European women preparing simple cosmetics recipes from manuals and recipe books in the seventeenth and eighteenth century to coming a multibillion dollar global industry in the twenty-first century. During the Renaissance period different makeup techniques were used to differentiate a persons level in society. Although all people in society used face powder and simple homemade skin-care products, stage actors and women who were believed to have bad reputations were the only ones wore visible colorful makeup. Colorful makeup applied to the lips, cheeks and eyes was so frowned upon that these practices were viewed as going against Gods natural creation of oneself. Cosmetics in the nineteenth century begin to grow with the creation of photography and ones critical assessment on self-appearance. Women in large cities began to wear evident forms of makeup and womens interest in cosmetics grew with their new self-identities as consumers in society. In the twentieth century, the growth of color cosmetics was sparked by the Hollywood motion picture industry. Women

I WANT MY MUSIC VIDEO ART SHOW

of the music video beyond just the musician and the song. Music videos have always provided us with the most amazing imagery. There are so many iconic visuals thanks to music videos and it has opened the door for so many amazingly talented music video directors that have gone on to influence television, commercials and movies. An art show like Chris needed to be created. Chris did the show with a good artist friend of his, Dave MacDowell. This came about because after Daves Black Keys video for Tighten Up won the Breakthrough Video VMA. Chris asked Dave to commission some art pieces to give to the band and management and label as a thank you for the success of the video. Dave being a man always down to help teamed up with Chris and helped gather artists to put the show together. A few months later and here we are with the most creative and inventive art show with almost 100 artists involved featuring art inspired by music videos from the 70s to 2011.
Lets Make a Sandwich by James Roper

BY JAVECIA BURNS Video art and music videos are different art forms with different histories. Video art, which developed in the 1960's, was about formal experimentation with new time-based media, while music videos were largely promotional tools developed in the early 1980's to market pop songs on music television channels like MTV. In Los Angeles, music video amateur Chris Marrs Piliero is mixing his love for videos and his love for art with a new art show, titled "I Want My Music Video Art Show. He is known for directing videos for Britney Spears, The Black Keys, and Taking Back Sunday. Of course, the show also pays some homage to MTV, which became the network and driving force for music video creation. MTV changed the face of music through its creation and its devotion to the music video art form, so it only made sense to give MTV a proper tribute. The art show's title, plays on MTV's old-school slogan, "I Want My MTV." Chris has a profound love for art shows and has always wanted to put together one himself. His project features reimaginings of videos by the Smashing Pumpkins, Lady Gaga and more. The artwork pays tribute to the art

BY ELIZABETH CAWLEY A recent trend among the bars in all the major fashion capitols are fashionable drinks. This is a great promotional method for the bars to charge higher prices for these specially created cocktails. Most recently launched were the New York and Paris Fashion week-inspired drinks. Bartenders have gotten very good at making a play on fashion related words. Collaborations between the fashion industry and alcohol industry are on the rise. This is a fun trend and is highly beneficial for both industries. The bars and hotels that offer these drinks are known to charge around $15 for one drink! With such high prices, you can still experience these trendy cocktails, it would just be much more cost effective to make them at home with the following recipes: In Manhattan hotels and bars, has a variety of these fashionrelated drinks.
