Bruces retirement, we still do not have a captain at Bayview Station, and no indication of when we will.
This situation is intolerable for a police district the size of Bayview, with the issues that their officers and we in the neighborhoods face each day. Captain Bruce was a trailblazer

during his time here, establishing community policing practices that got results and building better relationships between the police and our communities. Every day that we dont have a new captain with the same priorities and dedication, we lose some of what he brought to the district. We are not blaming the recent increase in violent crime on the Hill on the lack of a captain, and we strongly support the fine and brave work done by all the officers and staff of Bayview Station. But how long should they have to put up with this lack of support from downtown? Presidents Message
Booster members report that there have been at least seven armed robberies on the 600 block of Connecticut Street since April. Shooting deaths on Potrero Hill, the public housing on the Hill, and in the Bayview are on the rise again after a lull during the summer. District 10 Supervisor Sophie Maxwell told the San Francisco Chronicle recently, We're in a state of emergency, The mayor should call the chief, the district attorney, the supervisors from the affected districts together to strategize. . . . San Francisco has to take responsibility. We have to do something. We've not done enough. . . . If we don't step forward, these killers are going to continue to control the city, They'll continue to kill women and babies. I don't know what the police are doing.

Well hear more from Supervisor Maxwell at our next meeting on Tuesday night about City and community efforts to fight crime on the Hill and in the Bayview, what can be done to get more affordable housing out of the Planning Departments rezoning initiatives in our neighborhoods, and anything else you want to ask. On Tuesday, well also have Rajiv Bhatia, Director of Environmental Health for the Citys Health Department. We think youll be surprised at how strong the connections are between land use, nutrition, violence, and public health in the eastern neighborhoods of the City; and well discuss what we can do about that.

Here at the Boosters, we agree with the Supervisor, and we know of at least one thing that the police are NOT doing. After more than two months since Captain Rick
