1 Functional Units
This chapter describes the configuration of each functional unit. The number of functional units and PBAs depends on the configuration of the BSC. In the figure above, the letters X, Y and Z are used to indicate the maximum numbers of the associated functional unit or PBA. The table below lists the meanings of X, Y and Z for each of the six BSC configurations. Letter X Y Z Configuration 1 1 2 1 2 4 3 1 3 6 5 2 4 9 6 2 5 11 8 3 6 14 9 3
Table 1: Meaning of X, Y and Z for each BSC Configuration Full details of the BSC configurations are provided in BSC Configurations (Section 2). Although the access switches are functionally part of the DSN, they are physically part of the associated TSU.

The number of Ater TSUs, PBAs and BPAs depends on the configuration. Refer to the Introduction (Section 2.1) in BSC Configurations. As shown in Figure 3 above, the BSC performs 4:1 multiplexing of the Ater Interfaces. However, the BSC can perform 3:1 multiplexing. The BSC does this as follows: DTCCs 1 to 3 are multiplexed by ASMB1 DTCCs 5 to 7 are multiplexed by ASMB2 DTCCs 4 and 8 do not carry traffic.

1 Functional Units
There are two BPAs in the Common TSU. The second BPA is for the TSC, (see TSC (Section 1.7)). There is only one Common TSU. For the number of PBAs and BPAs, refer to the Introduction (Section 2.1) in BSC Configurations.

1.5 DSN
The DSN is made up of SWCH PBAs. The following sections show the DSN configuration for the various BSC configurations: BSC Configuration 1 (Section 1.5.1) BSC Configuration 2 (Section 1.5.2) BSC Configuration 3 (Section 1.5.3) BSC Configuration 4 (Section 1.5.4) BSC Configuration 5 (Section 1.5.5) BSC Configuration 6 (Section 1.5.6). In the figures, each control element is identified by a three-digit network address.

2 BSC Configurations
2.1 Introduction
There are six BSC configurations. Each configuration is fixed with regard to the numbers of cabinets, TSUs, PBAs and BPAs (see Table 5). Configuration 1 is the minimum configuration. Configuration 2 is the first extension step. It is created by extending Configuration 1 with an extension kit. Similarly, Configuration 3 is created by extending Configuration 2 with an extension kit. The other configurations are created in a similar way.

Note:
An Adjacent (or Neighboring) Cell is any cell known to the BSC. This includes its own cells and those of other BSCs to which handovers are made, or received. Adjacencies are pairs of cells which have borders. Two adjacent cells, A and B have two adjacencies, A-B and B-A. Three adjacent cells, A, B and C have six adjacencies, A-B, A-C, B-A, B-C, C-A and C-B.
