POTRERO BOOSTERS ~ GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES ~ Oct 26, 2010 DICK MILLET, VICE PRESIDENT ~ filling in for

Audrey Cole, President

David Glober, Recording Secretary Meeting Highlights:

This Months Police Report: CrimeMAPS, CompStat and Car Burglaries (pg. 1) Install Gates Around Walking Bridge at 18th St Over 101? (pg. 1) Emily Payne, Local Photographer, Family Portraits, Newborns (pg. 2) California High Speed Rail to Present in November (pg. 2) Police Report ~ Lieutenant Redmond of Bayview Station michael.redmond@sfgov.org ~ 415.671.2300 Non-Emergency Police number ~ 415.553.0123
CompStat comparative crime statistics for resource management, analyzes increases or decreases. Burglaries usually 25 to 30 a month, last month 45 including house burglaries, car burglaries. http://sf-police.org/index.aspx?page=3254 CrimeMAPS so individuals and community watch groups can map info from police reports. http://sf-police.org/index.aspx?page=1618 Biggest crimes Potrero Hill: car burglaries and robberies. Mostly targeting tech: GPS, laptops, iPods, etc. Every city is dealing with rise in theft of tech devices. Decoy officers have been dispatched in SF. Community groups will soon have specific contacts at station for any problems related to community group or around household, so that not just calling front desk but talking to some one familiar with group or area. This way sergeants can be held accountable, around the clock including midnight sergeants. Cameras are helping catch crimes, MUNI cameras included. Detail of the images is also good. If you wish to report some one rummaging in recyclables, get license plate if theres a car or truck involved, and contact non-emergency police phone number 553-0123. It is a misdemeanor violation of health code and police code. Penalties are up to six months in jail and/or a fine. Treated as a nuisance call, not a high priority to the police, but such cases are sometimes prosecuted successfully. Its an expensive trial for the City but once they have a case they deal with it seriously. If dispatch doesnt respond right away and youre holding a criminal suspect, just had a window broken into, etc. and, call station and ask to talk to a sergeant or a lieutenant. Criminals will sometimes use juveniles to commit crimes because of lesser penalties while kind of supervising near the crime scene.

Groups of people are safer than individuals. Even two people together safer than one person alone when out and about in the neighborhood especially at night. 18th Street Walking Bridge Over 101 Improve Security? Install Gates? Friends of the 18th Street Bridge Discussion
Install gates at night on 18 Street Bridge over 101? There was a recent violent assault on a resident th walking across the bridge at night. Discussion: Possibly form a group, Friends of the 18 Street Bridge, to involve people in the community including high school students, beautify the area so it will be more attractive and therefore have more traffic. Increased lighting and cameras preferred in recent community meeting discussions. No statistical information that crime happens more on, or near, a bridge, but might attract graffiti artists, and might route pedestrian traffic at night to more dangerous areas nearby. Concerns include what happens if police dont have resources to open and close the gates, and that people have been trying to improve the area and make it more livable so this would seem to go against that effort. Neighborhood watches including people going for walks three or four together can be effective.

Discussion of Ballot Initiatives November 3 Election

California High Speed Rail Authority (CAHSR)

Plans to create a depression under 16 and 7 Streets to accommodate tracking for both Caltrain and th High Speed Rail. Disruptive to bus service, cars, bicycles and businesses along arterial 16 Street, the only direct connection from Mission Bay / Eastern shoreline to Market Street and future billion dollar Transbay Terminal. Would eliminate as much as 8 feet in street width. So far CAHSR has been almost entirely uncooperative in providing engineering specs, leave-behind data and information; only circulating generalized and idealized drawings. Were all enthusiastic about High Speed Rail. An outreach representative from California High Speed Rail is scheduled to present to the Boosters in November.
