Candidate: Irene Navarro Content Area: Grammar: Quotation Marks Subject Matter: Writing Lesson Content Description: This lesson includes a mini lesson on quotation marks after noticing that students were using quotation marks incorrectly in their narrative superhero essays. Type of Lesson: Direct Instruction Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery: Direct Instruction Content Standard: WRITTEN CONVENTIONS 1.1 Understand and be able to use complete and correct declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences in writing and speaking. ELD Standard: EARLY INTERMEDIATE Write short narrative stories that include elements of setting and characters. Lesson Objective: All students will write a superhero narrative. Assessment: Formative: -Graphic Organizers -Writing Process Checklist -White Board Slates Summative: -Published Work/Finished Product Lesson/Assessment Modifications: -ELL: modify assignment (provide sentence frames), more time to work, go over graphic organizer together -ADHD: more time to work, allow student to stretch/get up (pass out materials), have student work in classroom library/corner (limit distractions) Technology: POWERPOINT/PROJECTOR- I will be using a projector to display Power Point slides RADIO- instrumental music in the background DOCUMENT CAMERA- model grammar lessons INTO Date: 03/22/13 (FRIDAY) Grade Level: 3rd

Anticipatory Set/Orientation (POINT OF INTO- prepare to think of story elements in todays reading) State the objective Show students a book (any book with dialogue) Point out quotation marks by scaffolding students to see what they notice (such as were the quotation marks are being placed) State technology that will be used: document camera Re-state Content Standard and Objective in student friendly terminology: Must tie into Assessment Today we will continue to work on our superhero narratives and review using quotation marks

THROUGH
Modeling/Presentation (I do) Show PowerPoint on Quotation Marks Guided/Structured Practice (we do) Practice Indirect and Direct Quotation Marks on white board slates Have class follow along to instructions on the Power Point Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment (they do) Have students go over their narratives and pick one sentence from their superhero story thats contains dialogue. Have students write their sentence without the quotation marks on their whiteboard slate Have students switch boards with their partner and insert the quotation marks with another colored marker State technology that will be used (same for the whole through component of lesson) PowerPoint, projector, document camera, radio Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students (same for the whole through component of lesson) -Student w/ ADHD: modified assignment, seated in an area where he can be least distracted -EL Student: modified assignment (less to write, focus more on content not length) -Have a Brain Break: allow students to stretch to music/ dance to music

BEYOND
Independent Practice/Summative Assessment/Closure Students will continue to independently work on their superhero narratives Students will look for proper usage of quotation marks as they edit their narratives I will teacher conference with students for those who have already edited their narratives

State technology that will be used: PowerPoint, projector Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students -Student w/ ADHD: modified assignment, seated in an area where he can be least distracted -EL Student: modified assignment (less to write, focus more on content not length)
